      • Collectivistic Aspects of Korean Discourse Style : Analysis from Sociocultural Perspectives

Vol.18 No.1

Language and culture are inseparably interrelated. Korean people have developed particular discourse styles that reflect the his torical, cultural and social phenomena and have shared the meaning within the Korean speech community. The Korean traditional value of collectivism places importance on maintaining group harmony, preserving traditions, and respecting authority rather than expressing individual opinions. The emphasis of the harmonious relationship in Korean traditional society has resulted in collectivism, high-context culture and high self-monitoring culture. Korean discourse styles are constantly influenced by these collectivistic characteristics shared within Korean society. Reflecting the collectivistic features of Korean culture, the pronoun 'we' has developed a special usage beyond marking a simple plural and the mechanism to express one's thoughts and feelings became indirect and digressive. Koreans realized by experience how to negotiate and communicate with nonverbal signals. The terms for social relationship were highly developed because they were expected to speak according to their relational status. This paper focused on what social and cultural situations have influenced certain discourse styles of Korean language and tried to analyze and explain the collectivistic features of Korean discourse styles according to the sociocultural and contextual frameworks.

Cooperative and Collaborative Learning through Reciprocal Peer Tutoring in EFL University Reading Instruction

Jeong, Kyeong-Ouk The English Teachers Association in Korea 2011 영어어문교육 Vol.17 No.4

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a group activity, reciprocal peer tutoring (RPT), in order to investigate advantages and challenges of RPT in promoting cooperative and collaborative learning environment for EFL University reading instruction. The participants in this study were 89 students taking an English reading course at a Korean university. RPT is a learning strategy whereby learners help each other and learn by teaching. This program was supported by a Vygotskyan perspective which assumes that learners gain mastery and develop cognitive skills through social interaction with more proficient others and their environment. This study relied particularly on participant perceptions through questionnaire survey and Anonymous Online class Report of the course. This study showed various advantages for tutors such as learning through teaching and becoming more autonomous and responsible for their own learning. Non-threatening and highly motivating learning atmosphere are parts of benefits for tutees. Other advantages for tutees included improved level of academic self-confidence, and motivation. This study also revealed several drawbacks associated with the problem of inaccuracy in students' production and students' demand for more direct teacher role. (182 words).

Promoting Communicative Language Teaching in EFL Context: An English Writing Course Mediated through the Web

Vol.18 No.3

Communicative language teaching (CLT) has become an innovative way in the field of English education to promote “communicative competence” of language learners. The paradigm of English education in Korea is moving toward the notion of CLT. Since students in EFL settings have trouble in practicing their communicative language learning experience outside the classrooms, some special efforts should be made to help students practice their communicative language learning in their everyday lives. This study outlines the rationale of how Korean hi-tech credentials with the rapid progress of technology and their application to language education can be a solution for providing real and authentic learning environments for CLT. This study will explain what CLT means in English education and then examine how we can help students expand their language learning experience outside the classroom. This paper will investigate the advantage of building a language community for a college writing course through the web in order to provide students with less threatening learning environments and promote students’ communicative competence and inquire how teachers’ positive and supporting feedback through e-mail exchanges can boost the students’ communicative competence.

Fantasy Literature in English Literary Education : Images of Schooling and Adult

Vol.48 No.3

This paper explores the current trends in the popularity of youth fantasy books, expecially Joan K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series (1997) and seeks to investigate the educational implication of the images reflected in the children’s fantasy books. Fantasy should be understood as a medium of illuminating another level of interpretation to understand its appeal and popularity to children. This paper seeks the reason why fantasy books capture children’s attention with wild enthusiasm in Korea and what themes have attracted them. Fantasy can empower children. By reading fantasy literature, children meet the heroes of the story and can identify with them in the heroic quest of the story. Fantasy may help children as readers to deal with issues of suppression and subordination and provide them with the liberated area from the authority and supervision of school and adults. Such subversion of power may be a factor that is drawing children to the Potter series. In the literary world of fantasy, children can exercise their own power over their lives without adults’ interference. On the journey, children join the hero’s adventure as an educational experience in self-knowledge and self-realization.
