Purpose: With the increasing numbers of foreign residents in Korea, the need for an emergency medical care system for foreign patients seems to be growing. Sometimes, a foreigner admitted to an emergency room is not treated sufficiently due to the absence of insurance, facility in the Korean language, and a guardian. The management of a foreigner with trauma in the ER is difficult due to various problems such as social and economic status. The purpose of this study was to investigate the current management status of foreigners with penetrating wounds in the emergency room. Methods: This study is an analysis of 580 patients that were diagnosed with penetrating wounds in one teaching Hospital from Jan. 1, 2008 to Dec. 31, 2008. We analyzed results according to nationality, alcohol ingestion, intentional or accidental trauma, trauma mechanism, injury severity, management time in the ER, and outcome in the ER. Results: Of the total 580 patients, 486 patients (83.8%) were native Koreans and 94 patients (16.2%) were foreigners. According to the Revised Trauma Score, the average score of native Korean patients was 7.808, and the average score of foreign patients was 7.638. Of native Korean patients, 22.6% had knife wounds while 38.3% of foreign patients did. Of native Korean patients, 17.3% experienced intentional trauma while 33.0% of the foreign patients did. Of native Korean patients, 22.5% had ingested alcohol while 49.4% of the foreigners had. Of native Korean patients, 10.5% were admitted while 7.6% of the foreign patients were. Of native Korean patients, 14.2% were discharged against medical advice (DAMA), while 18.5% of foreign patients were. Of native Korean patients, 1.2% ran away while 8.7% of the foreign patients did. Conclusion: Stabbing was the most common cause of penetrating wounds in foreigner patients in this study. Intentional trauma was more common in foreigners with penetrating wounds than in native Koreans. The severity was higher in foreigners with penetrating wounds than it was in native Koreans, and patients who ran away or were discharged against medical advice were more commonly foreigners with penetrating wounds. Social insurance or policy is needed for the management of foreigners with penetrating wounds. (J Korean Soc Traumatol 2010;23:102-106)

Spatholobus suberectus belonging to the family Leguminosae has been used in Oriental medicine for promoting blood circulation, removing blood stasis, tonifying the blood, relaxing tendons, stopping internal bleeding and eliminating dampness. This study investigates whether the water extracts of S. suberectus induce apoptotic cell death in Jurkat T-acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. Cell viability of Jurkat cells was inhibited in a concentration-dependent manner by S. suberectus, as measured by cell morphology. The capability of S. suberectus to induce apoptosis was associated with proteolytic cleavage of specific target protein such as poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase protein suggesting the possible involvement of caspases. The purpose of this study is also to investigate the effect of S. suberectus on cell cycle progression. G1 checkpoint related gene products (cyclin D1, cyclin dependent kinase 4. retinoblastoma, E2F1) were decreased in their protein levels in a dose-dependent manners after treatment of the extract. These results indicate that the increase of apoptotic cell death by S. suberectus may be due to the inhibition of cell cycle progression in wild type p53-lacking Jurkat cells.

Ailanthus altissima has been used to settle an upset stomach, to alleviate a fever and as an insecticide. We reported that the water extract of A. altissima induced apoptotic cell death in Jurkat T.acute Iymphoblastic leukemia cells. Herel we showed the dose-dependent inhibitions of cell viability by the extract, as measured by cell morphology The cell cycle contro1 genes are considered to play important roles in tumorigenesis. The purpose of the present study is also to investigale the effect ot A. altissima on cell cycle progression and its molecular mechanism in the cells. The level of p21-proleln was Increased after treatment ot the extract, whereas both Bcl-2 and Bax protein levels were not changed. These resu1ts suggest that A. altissima Induces apoptotic cel1 death via p2l- dependent signaling pathway in furkat cells which oelete wlld type p53 checkpoint related gene products tested (cyclin D3, cyclin dependent kinase 4, retinoblastoma E2F1) were decreased In their. Taken together, these resu1ts inulcate that the increase of apoptotlc cell death by A. altissima may be due to the inhibition of cell cycle in Jurkat cells.

Apoptosis is a morphologically and biochemically distinct form of cell death that occurs in many different cell types in a wide variety of organisms.Albizzia julibrissin belonging the family Leguminosae has been used for the treatment of contusion, sore throat, amnesia, and insomnia in oriental traditional medicine. This study investigates whether the water extract of A. julibrissin induce apoptotic cell death in Jurkat T-acute Iymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cells. Jurkat cells were increased inhibitions of cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner by A. julibrissin. This herbal medicine also caused apoptosis as measured by cell morphology and DNA fragmentation. The capability of A. julibrissin to induce apoptosis was associated with proteolytic cleavage of specific target protein such as poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) protein suggesting the possible involvement of caspases. Our result showed that Bcl-2 and Bax protein levels were not changed in all A. julibrissin-treated groups compared to control group. These results suggest that A. julibrissin-mediated apoptosis is independent with Bcl-2 related signaling pathway in this cells.

Quercetin is one of the bioflavonoid compounds and has multiple biological effects such as antioxidant and effective anti-inflammatory agent. Melanin has an important role in protecting human skin from the damaging effects of ultra-violet (UV) radiation. We studied the effect of quercetin on proliferation of B16/F10 melanoma cells. After 48h treatment of cells with quercetin, the cells exhibited a dose- dependent inhibition in their proliferation without apoptosis. Therefore, the decrease in cell numbers may be due to cell growth arrest, not due to cell death by cytotoxiciy. We also investigated the effect of quercetin on melanogenesis of this cells. B16/F10 melanoma cells were grown for 48h in the presence of 0.01∼50μg/ml Quercetin and the total melanin contents were measured. Quercetin stimulated melanization of the cells in low concentrations (0.01-20μg/ml), whereas it inhibited melanization in high concentrations (30-50 μg/ml). It was observed that quercetin differently regulates melanogenesis of B16/F10 melanoma cells dependent on its concentrations.

The optical charge pumping (CP) technique is proposed as a simple and fast method for extracting the energy distribution of interface trap, $D_{it}$, of silicon-oxide-nitride-oxide-silicon (SONOS) flash memories. It is based on the optical response of a subthreshold slope of a SONOS memory cell transistor and is more effectively applicable to nano-scale emerging devices than the conventional CP technique, because no electrical pulse is required during extraction and because the current is measured not from the substrate, but from the drain contact. This means that a large gate current can be easily corrected by monitoring both the gate current and the drain current, no parasitic effect is caused by excluding the pulse measurement setup, and the extraction of $D_{it}$ in devices on silicon-on-insulator substrates is possible. The results applied to SONOS memories show that the generation rate of interface traps with program/erase cycles is higher in the NAND flash scheme rather than in the NOR flash scheme.
