Equalization of Data Transmission through Nonlinear Channels

The purpose of this paper is to design robust equalizers -which have an ability to suppress dependent impulse noise and nongaussian noise based on training information. The algorithm proposed here is based on piecewise approximations to a regression function involving only quantiles and partition moments which can be estimated by Robins-Monro Stochastic Approximation(RMSA algorithm. For the purpose of testing the robustness, we adopted mixture distribution models, e.g. a -contaminated Gaussian distribution introduced by Tukey and Huber as noise models. The performance of the robust MMSE equalizers in satellite channels is considered for a wide range of SNR and various forms of nongaussian noise. The results are compared to a single sample detector and conventional equalizers, in terms of error rate and MMSE. The superiority of the proposed robust equalizers is clearly demonstrated. Due to extreme difficulty in calculating PF and MMSE, Monte-Carlo simulations were selected as means of comparison.

<P>Neutrophils need to penetrate the perivascular basement membrane for successful extravasation into inflamed tissue, but this process is incompletely understood. Recent findings have associated mammalian sterile 20-like Kinase 1 (MST1) loss of function with a human primary immunodeficiency disorder, suggesting that MST1 may be involved in immune cell migration. Here, we have shown that MST1 is a critical regulator of neutrophil extravasation during inflammation. Mst1-deficient (Mst1(-/-)) neutrophils were unable to migrate into inflamed murine cremaster muscle venules, instead persisting between the endothelium and the basement membrane. Mst1(-/-) neutrophils also failed to extravasate from gastric submucosal vessels in a murine model of Helicobacter pylori infection. Mechanistically, we observed defective translocation of VLA-3, VLA-6, and neutrophil elastase from intracellular vesicles to the surface of Mst1(-/-) neutrophils, indicating that MST1 is required for this crucial step in neutrophil transmigration. Furthermore, we found that MST1 associates with the Rab27 effector protein synaptotagmin-like protein 1 (JFC1, encoded by Sytl1 in mice), but not Munc13-4, thereby regulating the trafficking of Rab27-positive vesicles to the cellular membrane. Together, these findings highlight a role for MST1 in vesicle trafficking and extravasation in neutrophils, providing an additional mechanistic explanation for the severe immune defect observed in patients with MST1 deficiency.</P>

세계화의 물결속에 TV 프로그램도 점차 국제화되고 있는 추세이다. 따라서 다양한 언어의 사용이 증 가하고 있으며 이로인해 생방송 중 동시 통역의 수요도 점차 높아지고 있다. 미디어 통역은 회의 통역과 여러가지 면에서 유사하지만 회의통역과는 또다른 어려움들을 갖고있어 이를 위한 특별한 기술을 요구한다. 이러한 맥락에서 본 논문에서는 TV 통역을 중심으로 각종 미디어 통역에 따르는 여러가지 현실적인 제약과 보다 효과적이고 성공적인 통역을 위한 요건을 살펴보고자한다. 이와 더불어 오스트리아 미디어 통역의 발전사에 대하여 간략하게 되짚어보고 통역사들에게 새로운 도전과제로 대두되고 있는 웹스트리밍(Web Streaming)의 특징에 대해서도 논의하고자 한다.
Anticipation in German-English Simultaneous Interpreting

L`anticipation, au niveau linguistique aussi bien qu`extralinguistique, a depuis toujours ete consideree etre une strategie importante de l`interpretation simultanee (IS). Dans la premiere partie de son rapport, les auteurs passent en revue les definitions et classifications de l`anticipation utilisee dans la litterature. Dans la deuxieme partie, elles decrivent une etude empirique de l`anticipation en interpretation simultanee de l`allemand en anglais, faite sur une population d`etudiants en IS avec soit l`allemand, soit l`anglais comme langue maternelle. Les resultats suggerent une utilisation courante de l`anticipation. Dans environ une phrase sur trois, on trouve un exemple d`anticipation. Des locuteurs natifs de l`allemand montrent de meilleurs resultats que leurs collegues non natifs.

Over the years from 1860 to 1900, the majority of the teachers of the deaf concurred that learning arithmetic with support of visual illustrations or object teaching may benefit student learning, especially for students who received information primarily through the eyes. However, they were struggling with finding a more effective method to teach deaf pupils arithmetic and higher levels of mathematics as society was preparing for the Industrial movement, which required specialization in work trades and increased demand for workers to possess knowledge in arithmetic. This paper brings to light multiple attempts to teach deaf students mathematics.
Class I HDAC s specifically regulate E‐cadherin expression in human renal epithelial cells

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Epithelial‐mesenchymal transition (EMT) and renal fibrosis are closely involved in chronic kidney disease. Inhibition of histone deacetylase (HDAC) has an anti‐fibrotic effect in various diseases. However, the pathophysiological role of isoform‐specific HDACs or class‐selective HDACs in renal fibrosis remains unknown. Here, we investigated EMT markers and extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins in a human proximal tubular cell line (HK‐2) by using HDAC inhibitors or by knockdown of class I HDACs (HDAC1, 2, 3 and 8). Trichostatin A (TSA), MS275, PCI34051 and LMK235 inhibited ECM proteins such as collagen type I or fibronectin in transforming growth factor β1 (TGF‐β1)‐induced HK2 cells. However, restoration of TGF‐β1‐induced E‐cadherin down‐regulation was only seen in HK‐2 cells treated with TSA or MS275, but not with PCI34051, whereas TGF‐β1‐induced N‐cadherin expression was not affected by the inhibitors. ECM protein and EMT marker levels were prevented or restored by small interfering RNA transfection against HDAC8, but not against other class I HDACs (HDAC1, 2 and 3). E‐cadherin regulation is mediated by HDAC8 expression, but not by HDAC8 enzyme activity. Thus, class I HDACs (HDAC1, 2, 3 and 8) play a major role in regulating ECM and EMT, whereas class IIa HDACs (HDAC4 and 5) are less effective.</P>
