This paper develops and evaluates several strategies for structural vibration control with the objective of attenuating broadband noise inside a rectangular enclosure. The strategies evaluated include model-independent collocated control, model-based feedback control and a new 'modal-estimate' feedback strategy. Collocated control requires no knowledge of model parameters and enjoys the advantage of robustness. However, effective broadband noise attenuation with colocated control requires a large number of sensor-actuator pairs. Model-based con-trollers, on the other hand, can be theoretically effective even with the use of a single actuator. However, they suffer from a lack of robustness and are unsuitable from a practical point of view for broadband structural vibration applications where the dynamic models are of large order and poorly known. A new control strategy is developed based on attenuating a few structural vibration modes that have the best coupling with the enclosure acoustics. Broadband attenuation of these important modes can be achieved using a single actuator, a limited number of accelerometers and limited knowledge of a few modal functions. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed strategy.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Electroplasticity refers to the application of controlled electric pulses during plastic deformation of materials. The electroplasticity phenomenon in metallic materials has led to the development of electrically assisted forming (EAF) process with improved formability. The lack of a suitable constitutive model to describe this electroplastic behaviour is a serious limitation in modelling and optimizing the EAF process. In the present work, a dislocation – density based constitutive model is developed for electroplastic deformation and is capable of predicting the effect of continuous and pulsed electric current during plastic deformation. Single- pulse electroplastic deformation experiments conducted on Al 5052 reveal similar mechanical behaviour as that predicted by the proposed model. The proposed model is also validated against published results for multiple electric pulses using Al 5052. The predicted results correlate well with the experimental data. Technological Innovation Induced Growth of Engineering Industry SMEs: Case Studies in Bangalore

This paper, based on two engineering industry SME case studies, traces the origin and process of technological innovations enabling the development and introduction of new products leading to market expansion and enterprise growth. The study throws light on how entrepreneurs played a decisive role in recognizing market opportunities, building up crucial in-house technological capability, supplementing it with appropriate external assistance, to carry out technological innovations. A constant interaction with its customers is in-built into the system. As a result, the SMEs could achieve successful product innovations leading to their gradual growth, over time. Finally, based on the observations and inferences derived out of the two cases, a theoretical construct of the growth of innovation in SMEs is postulated. This is done linking the three stages of their development: (i) start-up and stabilizing, (ii) building up technological capability and implementing innovations; and (iii) opening up of new markets resulting in firm growth.

<P>Improved formability has been reported due to stress relaxation when the continuous forming cycle is interrupted with steps by adjusting the punch motion. The contribution of stress relaxation and its parameters on the ductility of materials has not been established so far. In the present work, the stress relaxation behavior of three materials, low carbon steel, DP and TRIP steels are studied. The influence of strain rate and strain on the ductility enhancement due to stress relaxation is analyzed. It is observed that stress relaxation improved the ductility of materials in all the cases and therefore can be used as a potential method to improve formability in sheet metal forming.</P>

Offshore Outsourcing Contracts : Real Options Analysis Using Trinomial Option Pricing Model

In this paper, we analyze offshore outsourcing contracts using the trinomial model, which is very useful in analyzing real options associated with offshoring projects. Earlier studies by Grenadier (1995) and Pashley, Krishnaswamy and Gilbert (1997) used the option pricing model to analyze lease contracts and debt contracts respectively. So far, however, no studies address offshore outsourcing contracts. Gopal, Mukhopadhyay, Krishnan, and Sivaramakrishnan (2003), Ethiraj, Kale, Krishnan, and Singh, (2004), Gopal and Koka (2010), and Gopal and Koka (2012) found through empirical studies a significant relationship between profits and type of contracts, and price and types of contracts respectively. But they do not provide a theoretical basis for their findings. In this paper we provide a theoretical basis for such a relationship employing the real options analysis using trinomial option pricing model.
