This paper reveals both the operational situation and the cause of the error occurred in wind turbine generator system of Hangwon wind farm in Jeju island. The four wind turbines were selected for this work, and the monitored period was for six months. Wind resource in the wind farm was analyzed, and the estimated energy production was compared with the actual energy production. As a result, with a decrease of system error, the estimated energy production was in good agreement with the actual energy production. The errors occurring in components such as gearbox and hydraulic motor affected the Availability of the wind turbine. Also, poor external conditions such as a strong wind, lightning and gust caused a standstill of wind turbines.
Estimation of the Wake Caused by Wind Turbine and Complex Terrain by CFD Wind Farm Modelling

복잡지형에서의 풍력단지 CFD 모델링을 통한 시뮬레이션 결과가 이 논문에 주어졌다. 이 연구를 위하여 작은 산(오름)들로 둘러싸인 제주도 성산 풍력단지가 선택되었고 두 개의 주풍향에 대하여 ANSYS CFX로 시뮬레이션 하였다. 격자생성을 위하여 실제 지형데이터가 사용되었고 풍력발전기와 복잡지형으로부터 발생하는 후류효과를 예측하기 위하여 SST 난류모델 및 액추에이터 디스크 모델이 적용되었다. 그 결과 성산 풍력단지 주변에 있는 작은 산 및 풍력발전기에서 발생하는 후류의 영향은 3~7km 계속된다고 예측되었다. 또한 그 후류는 풍속 및 난류강도에 상당한 영향을 미치고 있다고 예측되었다.
제주 서광지역에 대한 풍력에너지의 장기간 (10년) 특성

In order to clarify characteristics of variation in wind energy over a long-term period, an investigation was carried out at Seoguang site on Jeju island. The wind data for 10 years from Automatic Weather System (A WS) were analyzed for each year. The variation in the annual energy production (AEP) for the 2 ㎿ wind turbine was estimated through statistical work. The result shows that the range of the yearly average wind speed at 15 m above ground level for 10 years was from -22.6% to +13.7%, which is wider range than that in Japan. The coefficient of variation for the AEP was 22.7%, which is about twice of that for the yearly average wind speed. Therefore, for estimating the wind energy potential accurately at a given site, the wind data should he analyzed over a long-term period based on the data from the meteorological station.

제주 행원 풍력발전단지 내의 풍력발전시스템을 대상으로 연도별 풍력발전시스템의 운전특성과 고장원인이 분석되었다. 이용된 데이터는 2005년과 2006년 4월에서 9월사이의 기상데이터와 풍력발전기의 운전데이터이다. 그 결과, 풍력자원은 해에 따라 변동이 있음을 확인할 수 있었고, 풍력발전기의 발전량 역시 해에 따라 변동함을 알 수 있었다. 또한 풍력발전기의 고장 또는 정지로 인하여 발전량이 떨어지고 있음을 확인하였고, 후류로 인한 발전량 손실도 추정할 수 있었다. 같은 해에 풍력발전기 1, 2호기를 운전 개시하였지만, 고장 또는 정지원인은 일관성이 없이 다양함을 알 수 있었다. 이 연구에서 시스템이 가장 많은 시간동안 정지한 원인은 기어박스와 요잉장치의 고장으로 분석되었다.
2004-2006년에 발생한 제주지역의 낙뢰 특성 및 풍력발전기에 미치는 낙뢰의 영향

This paper presents the characteristics of lightning over Jeju island and a case of emergency stop of a wind turbine due to lightning. Using the IMPACT ESP sensor to detect lightning, the data on lightning frequency, lightning strength, regional lightning event were obtained and analyzed in detail. The measurement period was for 3 years from 2004 to 2006. As a result, lightning occurred the most frequently in July and August. As for lightning strength, lightning with grades -4 to -6 and +3 to +5 occurred more frequently. The eastern part of Jeju island had much more lightning frequency compared with the western part of it. Lightning with high grade occurred mainly in offshore site and the coastal region. Furthermore, the data on wind turbine stop caused by lightning was analyzed. Although wind turbine lightning damage was not much in this study, the investigation on lightning damage or lightning faults to a wind turbine should be conducted in Korea to increase availability of wind turbine.
Prediction of long-term wind speed and capacity factor using Measure-Correlate-Predict method

Long-term variations in wind speed and capacity factor(CF)on Seongsan wind farm of Jeju Island, South Korea were derived statistically. These lected areas for this study were Subji, having a year wind data at 30 m above ground level, Sinsan, having 30-year wind data at 10 m above ground level and Seongsan wind farm, where long-term CF was predicted.The Measure-Correlate-Predict module of WindPRO was used to predict long-tem wind characteristics at Seongsan wind farm. Each year’s CF was derived from the estimated 30-year time series wind data by running WAsP module. As are sult, for the 30-year CFs, Seongsan wind farm was estimated to have 8.3% for the coefficient of variation, CV, and-16.5% ∼ 13.2% for the range of variati on, RV. It was predicted that the annual CF at Seongsan wind farm varied within about ±4%.
