<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Numerous chemicals have been manufactured through industrial activities and used as consumer products since the late 18th century. Non-target analysis is a new analytical tool to detect many chemicals in environmental samples and to prioritize emerging contaminants. In this study, suspect and non-target analytical methods were optimized using gas chromatography coupled with time-of-flight (GC/TOF) to propose contaminants of emerging concern for the Arctic environment. A suspect analytical method was developed with qualification and qualifier ions, isotopic ratios, and retention times of 215 contaminants including persistent organic pollutants (POPs) to establish an in-house library. Non-target analytical method was also optimized with a deconvoluted ion chromatogram, which is a form that can possibly match the mass spectrum of the NIST library. Multiple environmental samples, such as seawater, air, soil, sediment, sludge, and iceberg, collected from the Arctic region were analyzed with suspect and non-target analysis of GC/TOF after the clean-up procedure with a solid phase extraction (SPE) cartridge. The commonly detected contaminants in the Arctic environmental samples were siloxanes, organophosphate flame retardants, phthalates, synthetic musk compounds, polychlorinated biphenyls, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Among them, siloxanes and organophosphate flame retardants were proposed to be contaminants of emerging concerns for the Arctic environment. 목적: 본 연구는 Lactobacillus plantarum J2K-27 (L. Plantarum J2K-27) 유산균을 발효한 폴리하이드록시산(PHA)의 변화를 분 석하고 그 효능을 통해 화장품 소재로서 가능성을 확인해보았다. 방법: L. Plantarum J2K-27 균주를 이용한 PHA의 발효에 의한 성분변화를 확인하고자 고성능 액체 크로마토그래피(HPLC) 분석을 진행하였다. 발효된 PHA의 항산화 효능 및 세포생존율을 측 정하고 히알루론산 및 프로콜라겐 type 1 생성량 측정을 통해 화장품 소재로 가능성을 확인하였다. 결과: HPLC 분석 결과, 발효된 PHA는 락토바이오닉산(lactobionic acid)과 젖산(lactic acid)의 성분을 생성하는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 발효된 PHA는 농도 의존적으로 항산화 효과를 나타내었으며, 세포 독성이 없는 농도에서 프로콜라겐 및 히알루론산의 생성량이 농도 의존적으로 증가 하는 것이 확인 되었다. 결론: 본 연구 결과를 종합하여, L. Plantarum J2K-27 균주를 이용한 PHA는 lactobionic acid과 lactic acid 의 성분을 생성하면서 기능성 화장품 소재로서 가능성이 있음을 확인하였다 Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of fermented poly hydroxyl acid (F-PHA) using the Lactobacillus plantarum J2K-27 strain, and identify the applicability of its biological compounds. Methods: F-PHA was analyzed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) to identify its active compounds. Furthermore, the radical scavenging activities were evaluated for F-PHA. The cell viability and expression of procollagen type 1 and hyaluronic acid were investigated. Results: Changes in F-PHA represented the increase of lactobionic acid and lactic acid after fermentation. F-PHA increased radical scavenging activity in a dosedependent manner. After fermentation, F-PHA was confirmed to increase the expression of procollagen type 1 synthesis and hyaluronic acid without cytotoxicity. Conclusion: These results confirmed that F-PHA shows generally higher activities functional cosmetic material.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important clinical outcome for dialysis patients. However, relative superiority in HRQOL between automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) are not clearly known. We compared HRQOL over time between APD and CAPD patients and evaluated factors associated with HRQOL.</P><P>All 260 incident patients initiating APD or CAPD at multiple centers throughout Korea were prospectively enrolled in this study between October 2010 and February 2013. HRQOL, depressive symptoms, and renal treatment satisfaction were assessed 1 and 12 months after the start of dialysis by the Kidney Disease Quality of Life Short Form 36 (KDQOL-36), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the Renal Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire (RTSQ), respectively.</P><P>Of 196 patients who completed all questionnaires and did not change the peritoneal dialysis (PD) modality during the 1-year follow-up period, 160 were matched. APD patients showed better baseline HRQOL than CAPD patients for the symptoms, patient satisfaction, pain, and social function domains. There were no differences in HRQOL between the 2 groups at 12 months, and CAPD patients had significantly greater improvements in symptoms (<I>P</I> = 0.02), the mental composite summary (<I>P</I> = 0.03), and health status domains (<I>P</I> = 0.03) than APD patients. There were similar improvements in depressive symptoms (<I>P</I> = 0.01) and patient satisfaction with treatment (<I>P</I> = 0.01) in CAPD and APD patients. Interestingly, depressive symptoms, not PD modality, was the most influential and consistent factor for HRQOL. Despite the spontaneous improvement of depressive symptoms, considerable PD patients still had depressive symptoms at the 1-year appointment.</P><P>APD has no advantage over CAPD for HRQOL. Considering the substantial negative effect of depressive symptoms on HRQOL, it is important to evaluate PD patients for depression and to treat those with depression to improve their HRQOL.</P>
