Breeding of new walnut cultivar, “Golden-ball”

A new cultivar of walnut (Juglans sinensis) was developed through selection from Korea Forest Research Institute. The goals of this research were to evaluate the yielding of walnut and their fruit characteristics of walnut selected from different regions in Korean Wild. Different varieties of walnut grown in Korea, were investigated in what concerns fruit weights, fruit length and their yielding. The walnut belongs to the family Juglandaceae. It is one of the most important nut crops grown in temperate regions. Walnuts, the seeds of J. sinensis are a highly nutritious food. They are also used as a traditional remedy for treating cough, stomach ache and cancer in Asia. The present investigations were undertaken during 2000-2009 in five walnut growing areas. In the present study a wide range of variation was observed in walnut characters from different locations. From these varieties, we have been regularly investigated the fruiting characteristics, which are the average of Fruit Length (FL) and Width (FW), and Weight of Fruit (WF) and Individual Yields (IY), during 10 years to select good quality walnut trees.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>There are few published studies on the relationship between occupational lumbar load and facet joint degeneration (FJD). This cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the effect of physical lumbar load on FJD by comparing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings of firefighters (FFs) and hospital office workers (HOWs).</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We randomly sampled 341 male FFs and 80 male HOWs by age stratification. A questionnaire and clinical examination, including MRI of the lumbar spine (T12-S1), were conducted. FJD was diagnosed and graded by using the classification of Pathria et al., and reclassified into two groups as follows: no FJD (grade 0) and FJD (grades 1, 2, and 3). The prevalence of FJD was analyzed according to occupational group.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The prevalence of FJD ranged from 31% (L1–L2) to 75% (L4–L5) in the FFs, and from 18% (L1–L2) to 69% (L4–L5) in the HOWs. After adjustment for age, body mass index, and frequency of physical exercise, the adjusted odds ratios (OR) for FJD in the FFs were significantly higher than those in the HOWs at all lumbar spinal levels, except for L3–L4 (L1–L2: OR, 2.644; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.317–5.310; L2–L3: OR, 2.285; 95% CI, 1.304–4.006; L4–L5: OR, 1.918; 95% CI, 1.037–3.544; L5–S1: OR, 1.811; 95% CI, 1.031–3.181).</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>This study shows that FFs exhibit a greater likelihood of having FJD than HOWs after controlling for other risk factors of FJD. This suggests that the physical occupational demands of FFs affect their risk of developing FJD.</P>

The objective of this study was to investigate the flowering characteristics, nectar secretion characteristics, and contents free sugar and amino acids of the nectar black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliot) for use as a honey plant. The flowering period was 14 days, the average number of inflorescence was 330.5, and the flowering number was 6,267. The amount of sugar per flower was 21.8 μg on average in flowers collected in 2<SUP>nd</SUP> May, 2018. In the total free sugar content, the hexose accounted for 96~97%. The amount of sugar per flower and the amount of flowering can be calculate to produce about 1.298 kg/ha of honey. Amino acid content was dominated by proline, asparagine, glutamic acid and glutamine.
