      • Association of −31T>C and −511 C>T polymorphisms in the interleukin 1 beta ( <i>IL1B</i> ) promoter in Korean keratoconus patients

        <P><B>Purpose</B></P><P>To investigate the genetic association between unrelated Korean keratoconus patients and interleukin 1 alpha (<I>IL1A</I>), interleukin 1 beta (<I>IL1B</I>), and IL1 receptor antagonist (<I>IL1RN)</I> gene polymorphisms.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>We investigated the association between <I>IL1A</I> (rs1800587, rs2071376, and rs17561), <I>IL1B</I> (rs1143627, rs16944, rs1143634, and rs1143633), and <I>IL1RN</I> (rs419598, rs423904, rs424078, and rs315952, variable number tandem repeat [VNTR]) polymorphisms in 100 unrelated Korean keratoconus patients. One hundred control individuals without any corneal disease were selected from the general population. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) – restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis and direct sequencing were used to screen for genetic variations in the <I>IL1</I> gene cluster. Haplotypes for the <I>IL1</I> gene cluster were constructed using Haploview version 4.0.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>We analyzed a total of 12 polymorphic sites in the <I>IL1</I> gene cluster. Among them, the −511 (rs16944) and −31 (rs1143627) positions in the promoter region of <I>IL1B</I> were significantly different between patient and control groups. The C allele of rs16944 (−511C>T, p=0.022, odds ratio of risk [OR]=1.46, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.94<2.27) and the T allele of rs1143627 (−31T>C, p=0.025, OR=1.43, 95% CI 0.92<2.22) were associated with a significantly increased risk of keratoconus in Korean patients. Linkage of the two alleles, −31*C and −511*T, was associated with an increased risk for keratoconus with OR=2.38 (p=0.012, 95% CI=1.116–5.046). The *C/*A genotype of rs2071376 in <I>IL1A</I> intron 6 was significantly different between the keratoconus patients and control subjects (p=0.034, OR=0.59, 95% CI 0.32<1.11). Other polymorphisms did not show an association with keratoconus risk.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>This is the first report of <I>IL1</I> gene cluster mutation screening in Korean keratoconus patients. Significant differences in allelic frequency of <I>IL1B</I> between keratoconus patients and the control group suggest that <I>IL1B</I> polymorphisms may play a role in the susceptibility of unrelated Koreans to develop keratoconus.</P>

      • High Temperature Mechanical Properties of Ni-Al-Cr Based Alloys with Refractory Alloying Elements

        <P>We report on advanced Ni3Al based high temperature structural alloys with refractory alloying elements such as Zr and Mo to be apllied in the fields of die-casting and high temperature press forming as die materials. The duplex microstructure consisting of L12 structured Ni3Al phase and Ni5Zr intermetallic dispersoids was observed to display the microstructural feature for the present alloys investigated. Depending on alloying elements, the volume fraction of 2nd phase was measured to be different, indicating a difference in solid solubility of alloying elements in the matrix γ’ phase. Lattice parameter of matrix phase increased with increasing content of alloying elements. In the higher temperature region more than 973K, the present alloys appeared to show their higher strength compared to those obtained in conventional superalloys. On the basis of experimental results obtained, it is suggested that refractory alloying elements have an effective role to improve the high temperature strength in terms of enhanced thermal stability and solid solution hardening.</P>

        Acute fulminant myocarditis following influenza vaccination requiring extracorporeal membrane oxygenation

        The inactivated influenza vaccination is generally safe with mostly mild side effects. We report a rare but fatal adverse event following influenza vaccination. A previously healthy 27-yearold woman who received the influenza vaccination 3 days before presenting to the emergency department had rapidly aggravating dyspnea and mental deterioration. She was diagnosed as having acute fulminant myocarditis with refractory cardiogenic shock, which was successfully managed with veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. The cardiac function of the patient recovered in 3 weeks.

        Compensation of Current Offset Error in Half-Bridge PWM Inverter for Linear Compressor

        This paper proposes a novel compensation algorithm of current offset error for single-phase linear compressor in home appliances. In a half-bridge inverter, current offset error may cause unbalanced DC-link voltage when the DC-link is comprised of two serially connected capacitors. To compensate the current measurement error, the synchronous reference frame transformation is used for detecting the measurement error. When an offset error occurs in the output current of the half-bridge inverter, the d-axis current has a ripple with frequency equal to the fundamental frequency. With the use of a proportional-resonant controller, the ripple component can be removed, and offset error can be compensated. The proposed compensation method can easily be implemented without much computation and additional hardware circuit. The validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through experimental results.

        Effect of Circuit Training on Aging-related Hormones in Obese Middle-aged Women

        노화 과정에 따라 중년 여성들은 폐경 이후 체력이 저하되기 시작하면서 체지방 증가와 제지방량의 감소로 비만으로 이어지기 쉽고, 이러한 현상은 체내 호르몬의 분비의 변화와 함께 발생된다. 본 연구는 서킷 트레이닝이 비만 중년 여성의 노화 관련 호르몬에 미치는 영향을 구명하기 위해 실시하였다. 대상자 체지방률 30% 이상인 비만 중년 여성 운동군 10명, 대조군 10명 총 20명을 실시하였다. 운동 시간은 준비운동 5분, 본 운동 20분, 정리운동 5분으로 총 30분 주 3회 실시하였으며, 운동 강도는 운동자각도를 이용하여 13~17(약간 힘들다-매우 힘들다)수준으로 실시하였고, 또한 POLAR 심박수 변화량을 측정하여 1~6주는 60~70%HRR (Heart rate reserve), 7~12주는 70~80%HRR로 설정하였다. IGF-1은 운동군이 유의하게 증가하였으며, GH는 운동군이 유의하게 증가하였고, DHEA-S는 운동군이 유의하게 증가하였다. 이상의 결과 서킷 트레이닝이 비만 중년 여성의 노화 관련 호르몬에 긍정적인 영향을 준 것으로 사료된다. Due to aging, the physical fitness of middle-aged women decreases after menopause. This results in increased body fat and reduced lean body mass, both of which can lead to obesity. This phenomenon is accompanied by changes in hormone secretion in the body. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of circuit training on aging-related hormones in obese middle-aged women. The subjects were 20 obese middle-aged women. The subjects were divided into two groups: a circuit training group (n=10) and nonexercise control group (n=10). Growth hormone (GH), insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1), estrogen, and DHEA-S were measured before and after the circuit training program. The circuit training group performed circuit training for 12 weeks, three times per week. Exercise intensity was increased gradually from 60% to 80% of heart rate reserve every 6 weeks. In the circuit training group, at the end of the 12-week training program, the IGF-1 levels were significantly increased compared to pre-exercise levels, and they were higher than those of the control group. GH levels were also significantly increased in the circuit training group, but the differences were not statistically significant. DHEA-S was significantly increased in the circuit training group, but the difference was not statistically significant. The results showed that circuit training improved aging-related hormones levels in obese middle-aged women.

        Effects of anodized oxidation or turned implants on bone healing after using conventional drilling or trabecular compaction technique: histomorphometric analysis and RFA

        <P>Abstract</P><P>Objectives</P><P>The aim of this study was to compare the bone healing characteristics adjacent to anodic oxidation and turned surfaces after implant installation using the trabecular compaction technique or the conventional drilling technique in the soft bone area.</P><P>Material and methods</P><P>A total of 72 implants (36 anodic oxidation surface and 36 turned surface implants) were inserted into the distal end of the femur head of 12 dogs by two different surgical techniques. There were four experimental groups: (1) DT group; drilling+turned, (2) DO group; drilling+oxidation, (3) CT group; compaction+turned, and (4) CO group; compaction+oxidation. The resonance frequency was measured and six specimens/treatment group were obtained at 0, 3 and 8 weeks, postoperatively. Undecalcified ground sections were prepared for histologic and histomorphometric examinations.</P><P>Results</P><P>At week 0, the trabecular compaction groups showed a higher bone to implant contact ratio (BIC) than the conventional drilling groups, regardless of surface types. The CT group showed a higher implant stability quotient (ISQ) than the DT group. At week 3, the oxidation groups showed a higher BIC than the turned groups regardless of the surgical technique used. The CO group showed higher ISQ than the CT group. At week 8, there was no statistically significant difference in BIC and ISQ between the groups.</P><P>Conclusions</P><P>Surgical technique and implant surface state have an effect on the initial bone response to two-stage implants inserted into trabecular bone regions.</P>

        Characterizing Organelles in Live Stem Cells Using Label-Free Optical Diffraction Tomography

        Label-free optical diffraction tomography (ODT), an imaging technology that does not require fluorescent labeling or other pre-processing, can overcome the limitations of conventional cell imaging technologies, such as fluorescence and electron microscopy. In this study, we used ODT to characterize the cellular organelles of three different stem cells-namely, human liver derived stem cell, human umbilical cord matrix derived mesenchymal stem cell, and human induced pluripotent stem cell-based on their refractive index and volume of organelles. The physical property of each stem cell was compared with that of fibroblast. Based on our findings, the characteristic physical properties of specific stem cells can be quantitatively distinguished based on their refractive index and volume of cellular organelles. Altogether, the method employed herein could aid in the distinction of living stem cells from normal cells without the use of fluorescence or specific biomarkers.
