        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise on immune and hormone response in 6 healthy male college students and 6 male athletes. They participated in to kinds of experiments. In the pre-experiments, they performed bicycle ergometeric protocols for the determination of ??. Based on the results of the pre-experiment, variouse intensities(60% ??, 80% ?? ) were determined. In the main experiments, they performed bicycle ergometric exercise till exhanstion. Venous blood sample were drawn at five times-at rest, 60% ??, 80% ??, all-out, and 30 minutes in recovery. Lymphocyte subsets were determined by flow cytrometry using monoclonal antibodies(Leu) for total T-, B-, ??-, ??-lymphocyte. Hormones were also determined by radioimmunoassy. The main findings of this study were as follows; 1. The number of total leukocyte of the athletes was greater than of the students during exercise. But no significant differences were observed in the number of total leukocyte between the athletes and the students. 2. The number of lymphocyte of the athletes was greater than of the students during exercise. There were significant differences between the athletes and the students in the points of 80% ?? and all-out. 3. The number of T-lymphocyte of the athletes was greater than of the students during exercise. There was a significant difference between athletes and the students at 30 minutes in recovery. 4. The number of B-lymphocyte of the athletes was significantly greater than of the students in the point of all-out. And, at the point of 60% ?? and 80% ??, the number of B-lymphocyte of the students was slightly greater than of the athletes. 5. There was no significant effect of exercise on the percentage of ??-, ??-lymphocyte. 6. Epinephrin and norepinephrine responses were pronounced in the athletes compaired with the students during exercise, however, there no significant difference between the athletes and the students.

        본 연구의 목적은 석재복합 신소재제품 연구센터의 데이터베이스를 인터넷상에서 구축하여 이 데이터베이스가 연구활동 및 산업지원활동을 지원하도록 하는데 있다. 연구센터와 관련된 데이터베이스를 인터넷상의 세계정보망(world-wide web)이 연계 및 등록시켜 적극적으로 연구소의 활동을 홍보함과 동시에 세계정보망을 통한 각국의 다소 산업체의 산업정보를 실시간(real time)에 검색할 수 있는 정보망을 구축할 것이다. 석재복합 신소재제품 연구센터의 연구활동, 연구결과와 관련 산업체의 활동들을 데이터베이스화한 뒤, 이를 인터넷상에 제공함으로써 연구소의 연구활동 및 관련산업체들의 활동을 국제적으로 홍보하며 각국의 수요와 온라인으로 상담 및 전자우편을 나눌 수 있으므로 해서 지역경제의 국제화를 맞을 것으로 기대된다. 또한 앞으로 있을 정보고속도로의 구축과 활용을 위하여 본 연구는 기여하게 될 것이다. The purpose of this study is to construct the database of RRC research center on internet to support the research activities and industrial activities. Registering the database on internet, the center will proactively advertise the local industrial activities and will construct the information network which will enable the real-time search for industrial information. The database will include RRC's research activities, research output, and related industrial's activities. The homepage will advertise the RRC's activities worldwidely, support the online business, provide the e-mail, and it will enable the research center to be the leader of internationalization of local economy. The study will also contribute to further study of information highway.

      • 고능력 젖소 축군의 집단번식관리프로그램 적용에 의한 번식효율의 개선

        We investigated the effect of reproductive herd health program (RHHP) on the reproductive performance in high yielding dairy herds. Data collected from 205 lactations at Boeun County, Chungbuk from April 2001 to Dec. 2003 included postpartum reproductive and metabolic diseases, body condition score (BCS), reproductive performance and milking records. First we compared the reproductive performance of cows without RHHP (pre-RHHP group) and cows with RHHP (RHHP group). Intervals from calving to first service (99.6 vs. 81.8 days) and to conception (160.3 vs. 131.8 days) were shorter in the RHHP group than in the pre-RHHP group. Secondly, we determined the effect of milk yield (305 days) on the occurrence of postpartum diseases, BCS changes, and reproductive performance in cows under RHHP, The occurrence of metritis and metabolic diseases were greater in the over-10,000 kg group than in the under-l0,000 kg group. The over-10,000 kg group lost more body condition than the under-10,000 kg group from calving to month 3 postpartum. Nevertheless, reproductive performance did not differ between the two groups. These results indicate that reproductive performance can be improved by the application of RHHP in high yielding dairy herds and that reproductive performance in the cows under RHHP are not affected by high milk yielding.

      • Translocation of DNA and protein through a sequentially polymerized polyurea nanopore

        <P>Here, we investigated the translocation of biomolecules, such as DNA and protein, through a sequentially polymerized polyurea nanopore, with a thin (<10 nm) polymer membrane of uniform thickness. The polyurea membrane was synthesized by molecular layer deposition using <I>p</I>-phenylenediisocyanate (PDI) and <I>p</I>-phenylenediamine (PDA) as sequential precursors. The membrane exhibited a hydrophobic surface with a highly negative surface charge density (−51 mC m<SUP>−2</SUP> at pH 8). It was particularly noted that the high surface charge density of the membrane resulted in a highly developed electro-osmotic flow which, in turn, strongly influenced the capture probability of biomolecules, depending on the balance between the electro-osmotic and electrophoretic forces. For instance, the capture frequency of negatively charged DNA was demonstrated to be quite low, since these two forces more or less cancelled each other, whereas that of positively charged MDM2 was much higher, since these two forces were additive. We also identified that the mean translocation time of MDM2 through the polyurea nanopore was 26.1 ± 3.7 μs while that of the SiN nanopore was 14.2 ± 2.0 μs, hence suggesting that the enhanced electrostatic interaction between positively charged MDM2 and the negatively charged pore surface affects the translocation speed.</P>

        Description of the External Genitalia and Uterus of a 24-month-old Freemartin Hanwoo

        We observed the external genitalia and uterus of a 24-month-old freemartin Hanwoo. The vulva was smaller than observed in a normal female Hanwoo, while the clitoris was larger in the freemartin. The angle between the external genitalia and the perineum also varied. Upon internal genital examination, the uterus of the freemartin was a thin tube approximately 18 cm in size and had not differentiated into a normal uterus and uterine horns.

      • Follicular wave emergence, luteal function and synchrony of ovulation following GnRH or estradiol benzoate in a CIDR-treated, lactating Holstein cows

        This study evaluated the effect of GnRH or estradiol benzoate (EB) on follicular wave emergence and progesterone concentrations. and following a second injection of GnRH, synchrony of ovulation, and pregnancy rates is a controlled internal drug release (CIDR)-based timed Al (TAI) protocol in lactating Holstein cows. Cows received a CIDR device without hormone (controls), with an injection of 100 ㎍ GnRH or with an injection of 4 mg EB. Thereafter, all received PGF₂_α at the time of CIDR removal on Day 7, GnRH on Day 9. and TAI 16 h later. Follicular wave emergence occurred within 7 days in 19/20 GnRH-treated, 14/20 EB-treated and 5/20 control cows (P < 0.05). The interval to wave emergence was the shorter and less variable (P< 0.01) in the GnRH group (2.9±0.2 days) than in the EB (4.7±0.5 days) or control (4.8 ± 1.0 days) groups. Serum progesterone concentrations from Days 4 to 7 were higher (P<0.01) in the GnRH-treated cows that ovulated than in those that did not ovulate, or in control and EB-treated cows. The diemeters of dominant follicle on Day 7 differed among groups (P<0.01) and the diameters of the preovulatory follicle on Day 9 were larger (P<0.01) in the control and GnRH groups than in the EB group. The proportion of cows with synchronized ovulations did not differ among groups, but pregnancy rate to TAI was higher (P<0.05) in the GnRH group (65%: 13/20) than in the control(30%;6/20) or EB(35%; 7/20) groups. Results suggest that GnRH treatment of CIDR-treated lactating Holstein cows will result in synchronous follicular wave emergence, large preovulatory follicles and synchronous ovulation, resulting in an acceptable pregnancy rates to TAI.

        Statistical optimization of phytol and polyunsaturated fatty acid production in the Antarctic microalga Micractinium variabile KSF0031

        Polar microorganisms produce physiologically active substances to adapt to harsh environments, and these substances can be used as biomedical compounds. The green microalga Micractinium variabile KSF0031, which was isolated from Antarctica, produced phytol, a natural antimicrobial agent. Furthermore, several polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including omega-3, exhibit antioxidant properties. Here statistical methods (Plackett-Burman design and Box-Behnken design) were used to optimize the culture medium of KSF0031 to improve biomass production, and K<sub>2</sub>HPO<sub>4</sub>, MgSO<sub>4</sub>·7H <sub>2</sub>O, and ammonium ferric citrate green (AFCg) were selected as significant components of the culture medium. Changes in the concentration of K<sub>2</sub>HPO<sub>4</sub> and MgSO<sub>4</sub>·7H <sub>2</sub>O as positive factors and AFCg as a negative factor affected cell growth to a remarkable degree. The biomass production in a 100 L culture using the optimized medium for 24 d at 18℃ was improved by 37.5% compared to that obtained using the original BG-11 medium. The quantities of PUFAs and phytol obtained were 13 mg g<sup>-1</sup> dry cell weight (DCW) and 10.98 mg g<sup>-1</sup> DCW, which represent improved yields of 11.70% and 48.78%, respectively. The results of this study could contribute to an improved production of phytol and fatty acids from Antarctic microalgae in the biomedical industry.

      • Effect of GnRH or Estradiol on Emergence of a New Follicular Wave, Follicular Development and Pregnancy Rate in a CIDR-Based Timed Al Protocol in Holstein Cows

        The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of GnRH or estradiol in a CIDR-based timed Al (TAI) protocol on follicular turnover, synchronized ovulation and pregnancy rates in Holstein cows. Cows were treated at random stages of the estrus cycle with an insertion of an intravigal progesterone (1.9 g) device (CIDR, Day 0) and either no other treatment (control group; n=10), injection of 100 ug fertirelin acetate (GnRH group; n=10) or 4 mg estradiol benzoate (estradiol group; n=10). Seven days later devices were removed and an injection of 25 mg PGF2a was administered. On Day 9, 100 ug GnRH was administered. Cows received a fixed-time insemination 16 h after injection of the GnRH.
