Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the supplementation of diets of broiler chickens with hot-melt extruded CuSO4 (HME-Cu) on their growth performance, nutrient digestibility, gut microbiota, small intestinal morphology, meat quality, and copper (Cu) bioavailability. Methods: A total of 225 broilers (Ross 308), one-day old and initial weight 39.14 g, were weighed and distributed between 15 cages (15 birds per cage) in a completely randomized experimental design with 3 treatments (diets) and 5 replicates per treatment. Cages were allotted to three treatments including control (without supplemental Cu), IN-Cu (16 mg/kg of CuSO4), and HME-Cu (16 mg/kg of HME processed CuSO4). Results: The HME-Cu treatment tended to increase the overall body weight gain (p<0.10). The apparent digestibility of Cu was increased by supplementation of HME-Cu at phase 2 (p<0.05). The Escherichia coli count in cecum tended to decrease with the supplementation with Cu (p<0.10). In addition, the HME-Cu treatment had a higher pH of breast meat than the control and IN-Cu treatments (p<0.05). Significant increases in the cooking loss, waterholding capacity, and lightness in the breast were observed in the HME-Cu treatment compared to the control (p<0.05). The Cu content of excreta increased with the Cu supplementation (p<0.05). The concentration of excreta Cu in broilers was decreased in the HMECu compared to the IN-Cu in phase 2 (p<0.05). The Cu concentration in the liver was increased with the HME-Cu supplementation, compared with the control diets (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study showed that HME-Cu supplementation at the requirement level (16 mg/kg diets) in broiler diets did not affect the growth performance and the physiological function of Cu in broilers. However, supplementation of Cu in HME form improved the meat quality and the bioavailability of Cu. Antibacterial effect of Scutellariae Radix on pathogenic bacteria

Antibacterial effects on Salmonella typhimurium, a representative enteric pathogen by the extracts of Scutellariae Radix(Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi) and its major flavonoid components - Baicalin, Baicalein - were studied. Through Disc analysis, growth inhibition activity of Scutellariae Radix against S. typhimurium was found to be compatible with the commercial antibiotics such as ampicillin, tetracyclin, chloramphenicol, kanamycin. In addition, Disc analysis and minimum inhibitory concentration of Scutellaria Radix were investigated on various pathogenic bacteria such as Shigella sonnei, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Proteus vulgaris. Interestingly, the antibacterial effects seem to be only acting on pathogenic bacteria rather than normal non-pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli. These results suggest that the Scutellia Radix work as specific natural antibacterial substrate on pathogenic bacteria.

Adenomyoma of the gastrointestinal tract has been considered to be a form of pancreatic heterotopia. Heterotopic pancreatic tissue in the gastrointestinal tract is a relatively not uncommon abnormality, but adenomyoma is a rarely reported tumor and its ineidence is difficult to determine. Adenomyoma is similar to aberrant pancreas in both appearance and location, and cannot be differentiated endoscopically or radiographically. Histologically, adenomyoma is primarily composed of smooth muscle and undifferentiated duct like structures. It is usually of no clinical importance and incidentally detected, but according to its location and size of the mass, it may become a serious clinical problem. Its real importance lies in the recognition of its existence, to facilitate a timely diagnosis, We present a case of adenomyoma of the duodenum with a brief literature review.

<P>We previously demonstrated that kainic acid (KA)-mediated mitochondrial oxidative stress contributed to hippocampal degeneration and that ginsenosides attenuated KA-induced neurotoxicity and neuronal degeneration. Here, we examined whether ginsenosides affected KA-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in the rat hippocampus. Treatment with ginsenosides attenuated KA-induced convulsive behavior dose-dependently. KA treatment increased lipid peroxidation and protein oxidation and decreased the reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio to a greater degree in the mitochondrial fraction than in the hippocampal homogenate. KA treatment resulted in decreased Mn-superoxide dismutase expression anddiminished the mitochondrial membrane potential. Furthermore, KA treatment increased intramitochondrial Ca<SUP>2+</SUP> and promoted ultrastructural degeneration in hippocampal mitochondria. Treatment with ginsenosides dose-dependently attenuated convulsive behavior and the KA-induced mitochondrial effects. Protection appeared to be more evident in mitochondria than in tissue homogenates. Collectively, the results suggest that ginsenosides prevent KA-induced neurotoxicity by attenuating mitochondrial oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. © 2008 Wiley-Liss, Inc.</P>

Concrete repair and reinforcement is a complex process, presenting unique challenges very different from those experienced in the field of construction. The purpose of this study is to pattern and mechanism of deteriorations in irrigation and drainage structure damaged or deteriorated are classified with several type. This provides a survey of crack repair methods, including a summary of the characteristics of the cracks that may be repaired with each procedure, the type of irrigation & drainage structure that have been repaired and a summary of the procedures that are used.
