This study was conducted to establish an effective in vitro mass propagation system using leaf and bulb scale explant sources of Lycoris uydoensis M. Kim. For the bulb scale culture, the bulbs treated at 5℃ for 60 days were dissected into three parts according to bulb height (upper, middle, and bottom), and allowed for a culture on the MS medium with 0.1 mg ? L-1 2,4-D plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA, 0.5 mg ? L-1 NAA plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA, and 3.0 mg ? L-1 IBA plus 3.0 mg ? L-1 BA. Regardless of plant hormone treatments, the bottom part of the bulb including the disk proved to be most effective in forming the callus and bulblets. Callus was readily produced on the young leaf segment and bulb scale tissues, whereas, bulblets and shoots were formed only on bulb scale explants. Bulb scales with disk appeared to the best optimal explant for in vitro propagation. Two distinct pathways, either organogenesis through callus or direct bulblet formation, could be recognized in bulb scale culture. Bulblet formation and shoot organogenesis from the bulb scales with disk were effectively induced up to the 60%~100% on the MS medium supplemented with 0.1 mg ? L-1 2,4-D plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA, 0.5 mg ? L-1 NAA plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA, and 3.0 mg ? L-1 IBA와 3.0 mg ? L-1 BA within 30 days of culture. On MS media supplemented with 0.1 mg ? L-1 2,4-D plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA or 3.0 mg ? L-1 IBA와 3.0 mg ? L-1 BA were more effective than 0.5 mg ? L-1 NAA plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA for induced and maintained a large number of bulblets. Six percent of sucrose enhanced bulblet formation and expanded the bulblets. Especially, adding 6% of sucrose on MS media supplemented with 3.0 mg ? L-1 IBA와 3.0 mg ? L-1 BA was one or two times of bulblets expanted than on MS mediun with 0.1 mg ? L-1 2,4-D plus 1.0 mg ? L-1 BA plus 6% of sucrose. Plantlet regeneration was successfully achieved from bulb scale-derived callus, via shoot bud induction or direct bulblet formation.

Various koji were prepared by fungi isolated from traditional nuruk and their quality characteristics were investigated. Acidity and saccharification power of their koji were ranged in 5.0~6.8 and 128sp~241sp. Nine fungi which were showed good quality and sensory evaluation were identified by analysis of their nucleotide sequences with PCR-amplified 18S rDNA internal transcribed spacer-1(ITS-1) and ITS-4 genes. Among them, six strains were identified as Aspergillus oryzae and the other strains were identified as Mycocladus corymbiferus, Rhizopus oryzae, Lichtheimia corymbifera.

Detailed information about the structural nature of three-coordinate borons in ${\beta}-BaB_2O_4$ is obtained through $^{11}B$ MAS NMR and $^{11}B$ single-crystal NMR. The three-coordinate $BO_3$ of the two borons B(1) and B(2) in ${\beta}-BaB_2O_4$ were distinguished. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the laboratory frame $T_1$ for B(1) and B(2) slowly decreases with increasing temperature, whereas the spin-lattice relaxation time in the rotating frame $T_{1{\rho}}$ for B(1) and B(2), which differs from $T_1$, is nearly constant. The B(1) and B(2) of the two types were distinguished by $^{11}B$ MAS NMR and $^{11}B$ single-crystal NMR.

Among abiotic stresses in plants, drought and chilling stresses reduce the supply of moisture to plant tissues, inhibit photosynthesis, and severely reduce plant growth and yield. Thus, the application of water stress-tolerant agents can be a useful strategy to maintain plant growth under abiotic stresses. This study assessed the effect of exogenous bio-based 2,3-butanediol (BDO) application on drought and chilling response in tomato and turfgrass, and expression levels of several plant signaling pathway-related gene transcripts. Bio-based 2,3-BDOs were formulated to levo-2,3-BDO 0.9% soluble concentrate (levo 0.9% SL) and meso-2,3-BDO 9% SL (meso 9% SL). Under drought and chilling stress conditions, the application of levo 0.9% SL in creeping bentgrass and meso 9% SL in tomato plants significantly reduced the deleterious effects of abiotic stresses. Interestingly, pretreatment with levo-2,3-BDO in creeping bentgrass and meso-2,3-BDO in tomato plants enhanced JA and SA signaling pathway-related gene transcript expression levels in different ways. In addition, all tomato plants treated with acibenzolar-S-methyl (as a positive control) withered completely under chilling stress, whereas 2,3-BDO-treated tomato plants exhibited excellent cold tolerance. According to our findings, bio-based 2,3-BDO isomers as sustainable water stress-tolerant agents, levo- and meso-2,3-BDOs, could enhance tolerance to drought and/or chilling stresses in various plants through somewhat different molecular activities without any side effects.

The spin-lattice relaxation times, $T_1$, and spin-spin relaxation times, $T_2$, of the $^{27}Al$ and $^{87}Rb$ nuclei in $RbAl(CrO_4)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ crystals were investigated. The presence of only one resonance line for the $^{27}Al$ nuclei indicates that the results in a dynamical averaging of the crystal electric field that produces a cubic symmetry field. The changes in the temperature dependence of $T_1$ are related to variations in the symmetry of the octahedra of water molecules surrounding $Al^+$ and $Rb^+$. The $T_1$ values for the $^{27}Al$ and $^{87}Rb$ nuclei are different due to differences in the local environments of these ions. We also compared these $^{27}Al$ and $^{87}Rb$ NMR results with those obtained for $RbAl(CrO_4)_2{\cdot}2H_2O$ crystals. The relaxation mechanisms of $RbAl(XO_4)_2{\cdot}nH_2O$ (X=Cr and S) crystals are characterized by completely different NMR behaviors.

The structural characteristics of 4-coordinate $BO_4$ [B(1)] and 3-coordinate $BO_3$ [B(2)] groups in $BiB_3O_6$ were studied by $^{11}B$ magic angle spinning (MAS) and single-crystal nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The spin-lattice relaxation time in the laboratory frame, $T_1$, for $^{11}B$ decreased slowly with increasing temperature, whereas the spin-lattice relaxation times in the rotating frame, $T_{1{\rho}}$, for B(1) and B(2), which differed from $T_1$, were nearly constant. Further, $T_{1{\rho}}$ for B(1) and B(2) showed very similar trends, although the $T_{1{\rho}}$ value of B(2) was shorter than that of B(1). The 3-coordinate $BO_3$ and 4-coordinate $BO_4$ were distinguished by $^{11}B$ MAS NMR spectrum and $T_{1{\rho}}$.
Enhancement of Parathyroid Hormone in Postmenopausal Women by Chlorella Dietary Supplementation

Parathyroid hormone has clearly emerged as the most promising new anabolic treatment for osteoporosis by increasing the activation of osteoblast. It is known that chlorella increases both bone mineral density (BMD) and the rate of bone formation. The purpose of the present study was to determine whether the chlorella dietary supplementation could effect the thyroid or parathyroid hormones associated with increased BMD and bone formation. Twenty-two postmenopausal woman were treated for four month with 4 gm of chlorella dietary supplementation per day, then assessed serum calcium,25 OH vitamin D$_3$, thyroid hormone and parathyroid hormone before and after treatment. The mean 25 OH vitamin D$_3$ and parathyroid hormone were shown to marked increases by 193% and 265% respectively, in contrast to decreases by 9.4%, 37%, 33% and 14% in serum calcium, triiodo-thyroxine, free thyroxine and thyroxine stimulation hormone. In conclusion, treatment of postmenopausal women with chlorella dietary supplementation resulted in an increase in BMD and bone formation through enhancement of parathyroid hormone and 25 OH vitamin D$_3$, and a decrease in thyroid hormones.
