        Current Level of Reproductive Performances in Japanese Black Cows

        A set of 313,169 reproduction records of Japanese Black cows calving between 1987 and 1996 were collected in nation widely Japan to investigate the current level of reproductive performances and the factors influencing the performances such as calving interval, first calving age, services per conception, calving difficulty, non-gestation period and gestation length. All the records of reproductive performances are outcome of artificial insemination. The means of first calving age, calving interval, non-gestation period and gestation length were 25.0 months, 389.9, 101.9 and 287.5 days, respectively. Services per conception were 1.41 and degree of calving difficulty was 1.07, which suggests most of the calving, did not need assistance. There were chronological tendencies that first calving age became younger while calving interval became longer. Differences in reproductive performance were found for seasons and calving numbers. Calving interval became shorter towards the fourth calving but became longer afterwards. The cows calving in May had the shortest calving interval followed by those in April and June and first calving age had a similar tendency. The cows with the standard body condition score showed more favourable reproductive performances compare with those with rather fatty or thin body condition scores.

        Association between number of teeth present and mandibular cortical erosion in Japanese men and women aged 40 years and older: A cross-sectional study

        Abstract Mandibular cortical erosion detected on dental panoramic radiographs is associated with increased risk of osteoporosis in older adults. Additionally, many reports have demonstrated an association between decreased number of teeth present and osteoporosis. However, whether mandibular cortical erosion is associated with a decreased number of teeth remains unclear. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to clarify the association between mandibular cortical erosion and number of teeth present in Japanese men and women aged 40 years and older. Among patients who visited our university hospital and underwent dental panoramic radiography for the diagnosis of dental diseases, 839 patients (293 men and 546 women) aged 40e89 years (mean [SD], 63.7 [10.6] years) participated in this study. Multiple regression analysis revealed that mildly to moderately eroded cortex (p ¼ 0.007) and severe eroded cortex (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with a decreased number of teeth present. Analysis of covariance adjusted for covariates revealed a significant association between mandibular cortical erosion category and number of teeth present (p < 0.001). Subjects with a severely eroded cortex had significantly fewer teeth present than those with a normal cortex (mean [SE], 20.7 [0.5] vs. 23.4 [0.3], p < 0.001) or mildly to moderately eroded cortex (22.2 [0.4], p ¼ 0.04). Subjects with a mildly to moderately eroded cortex had significantly fewer teeth present than those with a normal cortex (p ¼ 0.033). Our results suggest the significant association between mandibular cortical erosion and number of teeth present in Japanese men and women aged 40 years and older.

        Antiferromagnetic Transition in Ru2CrSi in Magnetic Fields

        In the Heusler compound Ru2CrSi, an antiferromagnetic transition at TN =14 K was revealed byspecific heat and magnetization measurements. In this study the electrical resistivity is measured inmagnetic fields up to 14.5 T, and the antiferromagnetic transition in magnetic fields is investigated. In the temperature dependence of the resistivity at zero field, a clear dip at 15 K and a humpwith a maximum at 9 K are observed. This dip is considered to be due to the antiferromagnetictransition. With increasing magnetic field, the magnitude of the resistivity slightly increases aroundTN; i.e., a positive magnetoresistance is observed. The temperature dependence of the resistivityis hardly affected by increasing the magnetic field. The transition temperature decreases only by 0.3 K even with applying 14.5 T. These results demonstrate that the antiferromagnetic state inRu2CrSi is unusually unaffected by a strong magnetic field.

        Eruption of a venous malformation through an iliac bone harvesting site after trauma

        Harvesting grafts from the anterior iliac bone has been associated with various complications. A 50-year-old woman presented to our department with a chief complaint of right inguinal swelling and pain. Autologous bone grafts had been harvested on two previous occasions from the right anterior iliac crest for use in the reconstruction of multiple facial fractures. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a full-thickness bone defect in the right anterior iliac crest. A mass was noted in the right gluteus minimus, while a multilocular cystic mass extended from the right iliac crest defect to the right inguinal region. Both the inguinal mass and gluteal mass were removed under general anesthesia. Following histopathological analysis, the gluteal mass was diagnosed as a venous malformation (VM). Based on the patient’s clinical course, iliac bone graft harvesting and trauma to the gluteal region triggered hemorrhaging from the VM. Blood components leaked out from the fragile portion of the iliac bone defect, forming a cystic lesion that developed into the inguinal mass. In this case, a coincidental VM resulted in a rare complication of iliac bone graft harvesting. These sequelae could have been avoided by planning for more appropriate ways to collect the grafts.
