A CAD Client on a Smart Device with Drag-type Buttons

Smart devices were developed and widely used recently, so it has been applied in the industrial field. If the mobile technology is applied to the CAD field, the user can get many advantages such as high mobility and ease of collaboration also. For developing a feature-based CAD system available on smart devices, we suggested a system using multi-touch inputs in 2012, which was a stand-alone system available without network. But it cannot be created complex shapes itself, because of the absence of the modeling kernel for the mobile platform and low computing power of smart devices. To solve this problem, this study proposed a client-server system for smart device CAD. When modeling commands are created from drag-type buttons, on each step, the analyzed modeling commands are sent to the server, the server creates the model and sends it to the smart device, then the smart device visualizes the modeling result. This system can make more complex models than the existing system. This study compared the developed system with the existing system for verifying the usability of the smart device CAD, and further, also suggested how to extend this system to the collaborative system. This smart device CAD system can increase the mobility and cooperativity of the CAD system.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Thyroid hormones (THs) as a therapeutic intervention to treat obesity has been tried but the effect of THs on body weight and the mechanistic details of which are far from clear. This study was designed to determine and elucidate the mechanistic details of metabolic action of THs in high-fat diet (HFD) fed Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Rats were made surgically hypothyroid (thyroidectomy, Thx). Body weights and food and water intake profoundly decreased in HFD fed thyroidectomized group (HN Thx). Results showed that delayed insulin response, increased total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein in HN Thx. Unexpectedly, however, Thx reduced serum and hepatic triglyceride concentrations. Further studies revealed that Thx dramatically increased circulating GLP-1 as well as increased expressions of GLP-1 in small intestine. Diminished hepatic expressions of lipogenic genes, were observed in HN Thx group. Beta-catenin and glutamine synthetase, a known target of β-catenin, were up-regulated in the liver of HN Thx group. The expressions of gluconeogenic genes G6P and PCK were reduced in the liver of HN Thx group. The results may suggest that surgery-induced hypothyroidism increases GLP-1, the actions of which may in part be responsible for the reduction in water intake, appetite and hepatic steatosis.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Surgically-induced hypothyroidism in rats decreased food and water intakes. </LI> <LI> Surgically-induced hypothyroidism dramatically lowered triglyceride while increased total cholesterol, HDL and LDL. </LI> <LI> Surgically-induced hypothyroidism increased glucagon-like peptide 1 possibly through β-catenin signaling. </LI> </UL> </P>
An alternative method for smartphone input using AR markers

As smartphones came into wide use recently, it has become increasingly popular not only among young people, but among middle-aged people as well. Most smartphones adopt capacitive full touch screen, so touch commands are made by fingers unlike the PDAs in the past that use touch pens. In this case, a significant portion of the smartphone's screen is blocked by the finger so it is impossible to see the screens around the finger touching the screen; this causes difficulties in making precise inputs. To solve this problem, this research proposes a method of using simple AR markers to improve the interface of smartphones. A marker is placed in front of the smartphone camera. Then, the camera image of the marker is analyzed to determine the position of the marker as the position of the mouse cursor. This method can enable click, double-click, drag-and-drop used in PCs as well as touch, slide, long-touch-input in smartphones. Through this research, smartphone inputs can be made more precise and simple, and show the possibility of the application of a new concept of smartphone interface.

유진 오닐을 필두로 하여 본격적으로 전개되었다고 받아들여지는 미국 현대 드라마는 한편으로 ‘멜러드라마적’이라는 평가에서 자유롭지 못했다. 역사적으로 하층 대중들을 위한 오락거리로서 멜러드라마가 성립한 이래 이 장르는 현대에 와서 여전히 위세를 떨치고 있을 뿐 아니라 TV나 영화 등을 통해 더욱 강화되는 경향이 있는데, 그렇다면 멜러드라마라는 장르가 현재와 어떤 연관성을 맺고 있는 것인지 살펴볼 필요가 있다고 생각된다. 이 글에서는 윌리엄즈의 초기 작품인 ꡔ유리 동물원ꡕ과 ꡔ욕망이라는 이름의 전차ꡕ를 통해 그 멜러드라마적인 특성이 무엇이며 어떻게 변모해가고 있는지 살펴보고, 더불어 그러한 특성이 현대적 감정구조의 일단임을 제시하고자 한다. 기본적으로 윌리엄즈의 드라마는 특색있는 여성 인물을 주인공으로 내세우고 있으며, 그 인물들은 동화적인 세상을 벗어나지 못하는 인간으로 묘사된다. ꡔ유리 동물원ꡕ의 로라나 ꡔ욕망이라는 이름의 전차ꡕ에서 블랑쉬는 공히 자신에게 적대적이라고 생각되는 세상에 등을 돌리고 자신이 만든 세상에 침잠하거나 아니면 그 세상을 다른 사람들에게 납득시키고자 한다. 그러나 이러한 그들만의 세상은 어떤 순간 이상은 유지되지 못하며, 로라의 아름다운 환상 이루기가 깨지는 순간에서 ꡔ유리 동물원ꡕ이 끝나고 있다면 ꡔ욕망이라는 이름의 전차ꡕ에서는 주인공 블랑쉬가 그보다 한 걸음 더 나아가 결국 광기로 맺음하는 모습까지 보여준다. 요컨대 동화적인 인물이 현실 속에서 무참히 깨어지고 결코 공존이 이루어지지 않는 모습을 작가는 보여주는데, 그 성공적인 형상화에는 천박함과 섬세함, 상스러움과 예민함, 열정적인 감정과 냉정함 등이 공존하는 멜러드라마적 감정의 분출과 기법이 크게 기여하고 있다.

A 3D CAD system that can be used on a smart device is proposed. Smart devices are now a part of everyday life and also are widely being used in various industry domains. The proposed 3D CAD system would allow modeling in a rapid and intuitive manner on a smart device when an engineer makes a 3D model of a product while moving in an engineering site. There are several obstacles to develop a 3D CAD system on a smart device such as low computing power and the small screen of smart devices, imprecise touch inputs, and transfer problems of created 3D models between PCs and smart devices. The author discusses the system design of a 3D CAD system on a smart device. The selection of the modeling operations, the assignment of touch gestures to these operations, and the construction of a geometric kernel for creating both meshes and a procedural CAD model are introduced. The proposed CAD system has been implemented for validation by user tests and to demonstrate case studies using test examples. Using the proposed system, it is possible to produce a 3D editable model swiftly and simply in a smart device environment to reduce design time of engineers.
