Electrohydrodynamic pulsed-inkjet characteristics of various inks containing aluminum particles

        Kang, D.K.,Lee, M.W.,Kim, H.Y.,James, S.C.,Yoon, S.S. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2011 Journal of aerosol science Vol.42 No.10

As nano-sized silver particles are prohibitively expensive, lower cost materials (e.g., micro-sized aluminum) are sought for the manufacture of conducting electrodes. Inks containing various aluminum weight percentages are dot-printed onto a stainless-steel substrate with an electrohydrodynamic (EHD) inkjet, which is superior to thermal and piezoelectric inkjets for inks containing larger particles because it ejects drops smaller than the nozzle diameter. Various ink solvents (ethanol, octanol, and diethylene glycol) are formulated with aluminum particles from 1 to 10wt%. EHD inkjet characteristics such as drop-separation distance, drop size, drop-to-substrate impact velocity, and required voltage are reported. The ink's thermo-fluid properties are the primary factors controlling drop characteristics and printing quality.

A study of ejection modes for pulsed-DC electrohydrodynamic inkjet printing

        Lee, M.W.,Kang, D.K.,Kim, N.Y.,Kim, H.Y.,James, S.C.,Yoon, S.S. Pergamon Press ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2012 Journal of aerosol science Vol.46 No.-

For electrohydrodynamic-driven drop-on-demand printing techniques, either continuous- or pulsed-DC voltages can generate drops. To generate uniform micro-drops for high-resolution printing, the pulsed-DC voltage method is superior to continuous-DC voltage methods because of its controllability. Voltage amplitude and duration (or duty cycle or relaxation time, τ) are the primary parameters affecting the performance of drop-generation or ejection. When charge accumulates on the fluid meniscus at the nozzle, a drop is ejected. Charge density is the product of voltage (amplitude) and duration. In theory, charge densities from low-amplitude, long-duration voltages are equivalent to those of large amplitude and short duration. However, we demonstrate that drop-ejection mode differs significantly, despite equivalent products when voltage amplitude and duration change. At various voltage amplitudes and durations, four ejection main modes are identified: microdripping, spindle, string-jet, and spray modes. Longer voltage durations yield excessively large, spindle, string-jet, and spray modes. Conversely, no ejection is observed for short voltage durations. The microdripping mode, most desirable for uniform and high-resolution printing, appears for the narrowed range of duration under given pulsed-voltage. The identification map has been constructed for these modes; this map can be used as a guideline to yield a stable microdripping mode for high quality printing.

Reliable Magnetic Resonance Imaging Based Grading System for Cervical Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

        Lloydine J. Jacobs,Antonia F. Chen,James D. Kang,Joon Y. Lee 대한척추외과학회 2016 Asian Spine Journal Vol.10 No.1

Study Design: Observational. Purpose: To develop a simple and comprehensive grading system for cervical discs that precisely, consistently and meaningfully presents radiologic and morphologic data. Overview of Literature: The Thompson grading system is commonly used to classify the severity of degenerative lumbar discs on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Inherent differences in the morphological and physiological characteristics of cervical discs have hindered development of precise classification systems. Other grading systems have been developed for degenerating cervical discs, but their versatility and feasibility in the clinical setting is suboptimal. Methods: MRIs of 46 human cervical discs were de-identified and displayed in PowerPoint format. Each slide depicted a single disc with a normal (grade 0) disc displayed in the top right corner for reference. The presentation was given to 25 physicians comprising attending spine surgeons, spine fellows, orthopaedic residents, and two attending musculoskeletal radiologists. The grading system included Grade 0 (normal height compared to C2–3, mid cleft still visible), grade 1 (dark disc, normal height), grade 2 (collapsed disc, few osteophytes), and grade 3 (collapsed disc, many osteophytes). The ease of use of the system was gauged in the participants and the interobserver reliability was calculated. Results: The intraclass correlation coefficient for interobserver reliability was 0.87, and 0.94 for intraobserver reliability, indicating excellent reliability. Ninety-five percent and 85 percent of the clinicians judged the grading system to be clinically feasible and useful in daily practice, respectively. Conclusions: The grading system is easy to use, has excellent reliability, and can be used for precise and consistent clinician communication.

Implantation of Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (ADSCs)-Lining Prosthetic Graft Promotes Vascular Regeneration in Monkeys and Pigs

        Zuo Xiao,Han Pengfei,Yuan Ding,Xiao Ying,Huang Yushi,Li Rui,Jiang Xia,Feng Li,Li Yijun,Zhang Yaya,Zhu Ping,Wang Hongge,Wang Ning,Kang Y. James 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2024 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.21 No.4

Background: Current replacement procedures for stenosis or occluded arteries using prosthetic grafts have serious limitations in clinical applications, particularly, endothelialization of the luminal surface is a long-standing unresolved problem. Method: We produced a cell-based hybrid vascular graft using a bioink engulfing adipose-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (ADSCs) and a 3D bioprinting process lining the ADSCs on the luminal surface of GORE-Tex grafts. The hybrid graft was implanted as an interposition conduit to replace a 3-cm-long segment of the infrarenal abdominal aorta in Rhesus monkeys. Results: Complete endothelium layer and smooth muscle layer were fully developed within 21 days post-implantation, along with normalized collagen deposition and crosslinking in the regenerated vasculature in all monkeys. The regenerated blood vessels showed normal functionality for the longest observation of more than 1650 days. The same procedure was also conducted in miniature pigs for the interposition replacement of a 10-cm-long right iliac artery and showed the same long-term effective and safe outcome. Conclusion: This cell-based vascular graft is ready to undergo clinical trials for human patients.
