A High Fiber Diet Responsive Case in a Poodle Dog with Long-Term Plant Eating Behavior

<P>An 11-year-old, castrated male Miniature Poodle dog was referred due to daily plant eating followed by vomiting for 7 years. Each time the dog went out for a walk, he had been munched grass, and then vomited. There were no abnormal findings on medical examinations. Through behavior examination and consultation, we diagnosed this dog as having a plant eating problem. Because we assumed that the dog had eaten plants to supply of dietary deficiency or relieve digestive problems, advised the owner to discontinue supplying previous diet and to feed high-fiber diet. On the follow up, the owner said that the dog had not eaten plants and vomited from 3 days after initial dietary change. The dog has not shown any clinical signs for 13 months. This clinical finding shows a possibility that deficient diet, especially fiber, relates to the plant eating behavior of a dog.</P>

<P>This study characterized the [(18)F]2-deoxy-2-fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) findings of encephalitis in dogs and assessed the role of FDG-PET in the diagnosis of meningoencephalitis. The medical records, magnetic resonance (MR), and FDG-PET images of 3 dogs with necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME), 1 dog with granulomatous meningoencephalitis (GME), and 1 dog with meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE) were reviewed. On the FDG-PET, glucose hypometabolism was identified in the dog with NME, whereas hypermetabolism was noted in the dog with GME. The T2-weighted images (WI) and fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images were characterized by hyperintensity, whereas the signal intensity of the lesions on the T1-WI images was variable. The metabolic changes on the brain FDG-PET corresponded well to the hyper- and hypointense lesions seen on the MR imaging. This type of tomography (FDG-PET) aided in the differentiation of different types of inflammatory meningoencephalitis when the metabolic data was combined with clinical and MR findings.</P>
Idiopathic Vestibular Disease in a Beagle Dog: Clinical Findings and Outcome

10-year-old, intact female Beagle dog was presented for examination of acute onset of right-sided headtilt and moderate ataxia. Clinical signs were acutely presented 12 days ago and had been progressively alleviated untilthe admision day. The dog was bright, alert, and responsive. On neurological examinations, mild head tilt to the rightand mild ataxia were noted, thus vestibular disorders were suspected. Central vestibular disease was ruled out basedon the clinical signs, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis. Otoscopic examinationshowed that the tympanic membranes were intact and normal in appearance. On radiographic and MR examinations,abnormalities were not found in the tympanic bulla and the petrous portion of the temporal bone. Hypothyroidismwas ruled out by thyroid-stimulation hormone (TSH) stimulation test. Clinical signs were completely disappeared at2 weeks after discharge without any therapy. Thus, the dog was definitively diagnosed as idiopathic vestibular diseasebased on the clinical signs, excluding other causes of vestibular dysfunction, and the alleviation of clinical signs withtime.

<P>A 12-year-old intact male Maltese dog presented with an inguinal mass. Histopathology revealed a grade III mast cell tumor. Computed tomography demonstrated pulmonary and inguinal nodules and masses. Chemotherapy was performed using a vinblastine/prednisone protocol, and the inguinal mass disappeared 5 weeks later. Use of 2-deoxy-2-[<SUP>18</SUP>F]fluoro-D-glucose (<SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG) and <SUB>L</SUB>-[methyl- <SUP>11</SUP>C]methionine (<SUP>11</SUP>C-MET)-positron emission tomography (PET) demonstrated hypermetabolic areas in the lungs and inguinal region one week after initial chemotherapy. The standardized uptake values of <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG were not different between lung and inguinal lesions; however, the inguinal lesion had a higher <SUP>11</SUP>C-MET standardized uptake value than the lung lesions. The hypermetabolic area was still visible on the second <SUP>18</SUP>F-FDG-PET scan despite the disappearance of the mass. This is the first report of <SUP>11</SUP>C-MET-PET findings associated with a cutaneous mast cell tumor in a dog.</P>

<P>The purpose of this study was to assess the normal distribution of (18)F-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) uptake of canine brain structures using a high-resolution research tomography-positron emission tomography (HRRT-PET) and 7 T-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) fusion system. FDG-PET and T2-weighted MRI of the brain were performed on 4 healthy laboratory beagle dogs. On MRI, regions of interests (ROIs) were manually drawn over 51 intracranial structures, including nine gross structures and 42 detailed structures. Relative standard uptake value ratio (rSUV=SUV of ROI/SUV of whole brain) was calculated for each ROI. The HRRT-PET and 7 T-MRI fusion imaging system demonstrated significant differences in glucose metabolism among various intracranial structures. Among gross structures, the midbrain and the pons and medulla oblongata had the highest uptake (rSUV: 1.12 0.03) and lowest uptake (rSUV: 0.90 0.06) of FDG, respectively. When rSUVs were calculated on detailed regions, the caudal colliculus and the longitudinal fibers of pons had the highest (rSUV: 1.62 0.05) and the lowest (rSUV: 0.63 0.03) glucose metabolism, respectively. Because the high resolution of PET-MRI fusion images provided clearly identifiable metabolic activities of canine brain, the HRRT-PET and 7 T-MRI fusion imaging might be a good tool for evaluation of intracranial diseases in canines.</P>
Juvenile cellulitis in a 7-month-old Shih-Tzu dog

A-7-month-old, intact male Shih-Tzu dog was referred with facial dermatitis and stifle pain with 7 days duration. Erythema, hemorrhage, and crusted nodular lesions of the face, swollen eyelids, and otitis externa were observed. A painful response was noted on palpation of the right stifle joint. Impression smears and skin biopsies revealed pyogranulomatous inflammation consistent with canine juvenile cellulitis (CJC). Skin lesions and pain were greatly improved following immunosuppressive corticosteroid therapy. This report firstly describes clinical and histopathological findings as well as treatment responses of CJC in a 7-month-old, domestic dog.

A 14-month-old, neutered female Miniature Pinscher was referred due to severe renal failure. The dog was treated with hysterotomy and followed by ovariohysterectomy (OHE) 6 days before the presentation. Excretory urographic and ultrasonographic studies revealed bilateral hydroureter and hydronephrosis. Postmortem necropsy revealed that ligatures were placed around the caudal portion of bilateral ureters in front of entrance into the bladder. This case shows that identifying and protecting the ureters are important during hysterotomy with OHE as well as OHE.

<P>The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic value of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and assess the correlation between the volume of the ischemic lesion and neurobehavioral status during the subacute stage of ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke was induced in 6 healthy laboratory beagles through permanent occlusion of the middle cerebral artery (MCAO). T2-weighted and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) imaging, diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), measurement of the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) ratio, and neurobehavioral evaluation were performed 3 times serially by using a 1.5-T MR system: before and 3 and 10 d after MCAO. Ischemic lesions demonstrated T2 hyperintensity, FLAIR hyperintensity, and DWI hyperintensity. The ADC ratio was decreased initially but then was increased at 10 d after MCAO. Ischemic lesion volumes on T2-weighted and FLAIR imaging were not significantly different from those on DWI. The lesion volume and neurobehavioral score showed strong correlation. Our results suggest that conventional MRI may be a reliable diagnostic tool during the subacute stage of canine ischemic stroke.</P>

The prevalence of feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1), feline calicivirus (FCV), and Chlamydophila (C.) felis was studied in cats of an animal shelter in Korea. Total 78 cats without ocular and upper respiratory tract disease were examined. Specimens were obtained from ocular conjunctiva and oropharynx. Using multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription PCR, three pathogens were simultaneously detected. In examined 78 cats, 49 (63%) cats were positive for FHV-1. However, all specimens were negative for C. felis and FCV. In conclusion, many cats recovered from FHV-1 infection remain subclinical carriers in shelter environment. <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (<SUP>1</SUP>H MRS) provides <I>in vivo</I> biochemical information on tissue metabolites. The purpose of this study was to investigate the serial metabolic changes of <SUP>1</SUP>H MRS in the cerebrum of ischemic dogs. An ischemic stroke was induced in five health laboratory beagle dogs by permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion using a silicone plug. <SUP>1</SUP>H MRS was serially performed three times with a 1.5-T MR system: before, three days after and 10days after the stroke. Immunohistochemical staining was performed to determine the expression of neuronal nuclei (NeuN) and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) at both the ipsilateral and contralateral cerebral cortex. Reduced levels of <I>N</I>-acetyl-asparate (<I>p</I><0.05), choline (Cho), creatine (Cr) and myo-inositol (mI), and a marked increase in the lactate (Lac) level (<I>p</I><0.01) were found at three days after the stroke. At 10days after the stroke, the levels of Lac significantly increased (<I>p</I><0.01); however, the other metabolites were partially elevated. The changes of Cr, Cho and mI were not statistically significant (<I>p</I>>0.05) when the before and after stroke values were compared. There was a significant loss of NeuN and GFAP immunoreactivity at the ischemic core. <SUP>1</SUP>H MRS may be to a useful diagnostic tool for the evaluation of ischemic stroke in dogs.</P>
