Why English Motion Verbs are Special\ulcorner

A cross-linguistic examination of motion constructions reveals that the nature of the special property of English motion verbs that Tenny (1995) discussed-namely, why English can freely append locational delimiters to manner-of-motion verbs, as in Bill swam/rowed/canoed to the end of the lake -resides not in the verbs but in the semantic structure of the prepositions that denote transition from motion to end location. It is further argued that the differentiation of bounded paths from non-bounded Ones provides a clear-cut basis on which to distinguish motion constructions from resultative constructions. This proposal provides an alternative to the analyses of resultative constructions by Wechsler (1997) and Rappaport Hovav and Levin (2001).
The Role of Home-Based Care Managers in Japan

Surveys were conducted to study the role and function of care managers (CMs) in Japan` s long-term care insurance system by examining work hours and subjective evaluations. Between October and December 2011, we used a self-report time study method with 745 CMs in 308 home-based care management agencies and received responses from 373 people in 153 businesses (50.1% response rate). By performing cluster analysis based on the values of necessity, burden, and achievement in the subjective evaluations of the CMs` duties, we were able to classify 16 duties into two groups; cluster 1 included conclusion of contracts, in-service/seminars, staff supervision, patients` rights advocacy, complaint resolution, direct/nursing care activities, quality improvement activities and facility administration-related activities, and cluster 2 included pre-admission consultations, assessment, care planning activities, team management, consultation, cooperation with the community, indirect care activities, and other. Cluster 2 had a greater rate of occurrence than cluster 1, and more time was spent on these duties. In addition, necessity was higher in cluster 2 than in cluster 1, although burden and achievement were lower. The duties in cluster 2 are consistent with the role of CMs required under the long-term care insurance system. Eleven years of practice have passed since the birth of care management along with the long-term care insurance system; CMs are recognizing the necessity of these duties as realities confronting them become apparent, and the CMs` role has been clarified. The duty with the highest necessity and achievement was patients` rights advocacy. Complaint resolution had the highest burden. In terms of the CMs` role, the possibility of further proactive involvement in patients` rights advocacy and improving the ability to cope with complaint resolution could lead to a reduced burden on CMs.

Rhythmic Gene Expression in Somite Formation and Neural Development

In mouse embryos, somite formation occurs every two hours, and this periodic event is regulated by a biological clock called the segmentation clock, which involves cyclic expression of the basic helix-loop-helix gene Hes7. Hes7 expression oscillates by negative feedback and is cooperatively regulated by Fgf and Notch signaling. Both loss of expression and sustained expression of Hes7 result in severe somite fusion, suggesting that Hes7 oscillation is required for proper somite segmentation. Expression of a related gene, Hes1, also oscillates by negative feedback with a period of about two hours in many cell types such as neural progenitor cells. Hes1 is required for maintenance of neural progenitor cells, but persistent Hes1 expression inhibits proliferation and differentiation of these cells, suggesting that Hes1 oscillation is required for their proper activities. Hes1 oscillation regulates cyclic expression of the proneural gene Neurogenin2 (Ngn2) and the Notch ligand Delta1, which in turn lead to maintenance of neural progenitor cells by mutual activation of Notch signaling. Taken together, these results suggest that oscillatory expression with short periods (ultradian oscillation) plays an important role in many biological events.
A construction of two-weight codes and its applications

It is well-known that there exists a constant-weight $[s \theta_{k-1},k, $ $ sq^{k-1}]_q$ code for any positive integer $s$, which is an $s$-fold simplex code, where $\theta_{j}=(q^{j+1}-1)/(q-1)$. This gives an upper bound $n_q(k, s q^{k-1}+d) \le s \theta_{k-1} + n_q(k,d)$ for any positive integer $d$, where $n_q(k,d)$ is the minimum length $n$ for which an $[n,k,d]_q$ code exists. We construct a two-weight $[s \theta_{k-1}+1,k, s q^{k-1}]_q$ code for $1 \le s \le k-3$, which gives a better upper bound $n_q(k, s q^{k-1}+d) \le s \theta_{k-1} +1 + n_q(k-1,d)$ for $1 \le d \le q^s$. As another application, we prove that $n_q(5,d)=\sum_{i=0}^{4}{\left\lceil{{d}/{q^i}}\right\rceil}$ for $q^{4}+1 \le d \le q^4+q$ for any prime power $q$.
