This paper claims that there is only one copular verb be and all copular constructions share the same structure. In English, predicational copular sentences and specificational copular sentences show the difference on the basis of whether pre-copula DP Head and post-copula DP Head have [definite] feature or not, driven by semantic properties of the DP HEAD. This argument is distinguished from the two precedent analyses on copular sentences. Heggie (1988), Moro(1977), and Mikkelsen (2005), among others, claim that the specificational copular sentence is an inverse predicational copular sentence, and that the predicational copular sentence and specificational copular sentence involve one and the same be. The other position, including Rothestein (2001), claims that the specificational copular sentence is not derived by inversion. Rothestein (2001) proposes that the specificational copular sentence is a subtype of equative sentences. The specificational copular sentence has the different structure from the predicational copular sentence.

This article is to investigate the possibility that project-based classes introducing mobile phones can replace the monotony of traditional classes led by teachers as well as they can encourage students to take active part in the classes to some extent. The students in groups choose a genre for their own video projects (e.g., movie, drama, news, documentary, and commercial) and produce the video contents using a mobile phone for presentation made at the end of a semester. In the sense that the students are allowed to do video-based mobile phone projects, they can work independently outside of class, where time and space are more flexible and students are free from the anxiety of speaking or acting in front of an audience. A mobile phone project consists of around five stages done both in and outside of the classroom. All of these stages can be graded independently, including genre selection, drafting of scripts, peer review and revision, rehearsals, and presentation of the video. Feedback is given to students. After the presentation, students filled out a survey questionnaire sheet devised to analyze students’ responses toward preferences and level of difficulty of the project activity. Finally, proposals are made for introduction of a better mobile phone-based project classes.

The central purpose of the current paper is to examine a set of negative sentences and explore the issue of whether the existence of NegP is a universal property that can hold in every natural language. I propose that unless strong counterevidence is found in a particular language, say Korean, this hypothesis should hold. For example, Korean negation can be easily and/or more readily accounted for with the assumption that the functional category of NegP also exists in Korean. I further argue that the affix ci rather than the negative an is the head of NegP.

Some Notes on Copular Sentences

The current paper claims that there is only one copular verb be and all copular constructions share the same structure. In English, both predicational and specificational copular sentences involve a small clause and raising to the surface subject position is possible if the set denoted by the raised DP is a subset of the set denoted by the other DP remaining in situ. The presence and absence of the [+definite] feature on the pre-copula DP is a sufficient but not a necessary condition for the construction under discussion.

본고에서는 초소주의 모델 하에서 구구조 구성과 어순의 결정 과정이 어떻게 재해석될 수 있는가를 고찰한다. 어휘에서 연산부로의 도출과정은 배번집합을 통하고 이 단계에서 구구조는 완성이 되나, 이를 설명하기 우한 X-바이론과 같은 별도의 원리나 장치는 필요없다는 것을 보여준다. 반면에 문자화라는 조작을 통한 연산부에서 형태부로의 도출과정에서 어순이 결정되는 체계를 논의한다. 논의의 초점은 기존모델의 문법 그림에서 중첩성을 제거하여 설명력을 찾는데 있다. 어순에 관해서는 문자화라는 조작 자체의 정의에 구구조의 헤체라는 개념을 설정하는 가설을 제안한다.
