A search for light dark matter using low-threshold data from the single phase liquid xenon scintillation detector XMASS, has been conducted. Using the entire 835 kg inner volume as target, the analysis threshold can be lowered to 0.3 keVee (electron-equivalent) to search for light dark matter. With low-threshold data corresponding to a 5591.4 kg@?day exposure of the detector and without discriminating between nuclear-recoil and electronic events, XMASS excludes part of the parameter space favored by other experiments.

<P>Glasses based on the system of Y2O3-BaO-Nb2O5-B2O3, corresponding to the pseudo-binary 64Ba(1 - x)Y(2x/3)Nb(2)O(6)-B2O3 with x = 0.1-0.5, were prepared, and their thermal properties, electronic polarizabilities, optical basicities, and crystallization behavior were clarified. The glasses showed the glass transition temperature of 602-610 degrees C, crystallization peak temperature of 686-676 degrees C, and refractive index of 1.967-2.007. All the glasses showed the bulk crystallization behavior, providing Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 nanocrystals with a tetragonal tungsten bronze structure. It was found from high resolution transmission electron microscope observations that the morphology of Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 nanocrystals is ellipsoidal and their average particle size is in the range of 20-40 nm. The glass-ceramics with Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 nanocrystals showed high dielectric constants (frequency: 1 kHz) of similar to 90 at room temperature and a ferroelectric nature. Highly oriented Ba1 - xY2x/3Nb2O6 crystal lines were patterned by laser (continuous wave Yb:YVO4 fiber laser with a wavelength of 1080 nm) irradiation with the condition of a laser power of 1.9 W and a laser scanning speed of 4 pm/s and with the laser focal position of 20 mu m beneath from the surface in 2NiO-1.1Y(2)O(3)-29.8BaO-33.1Nb(2)O(5)-36B(2)O(3) glass. A system for long-term dry preservation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) callus and a protection mechanism regulating the survival of dried callus were investigated. The highest survival of dried callus and the highest regeneration of plantlets were observed in calli which had been pretreated with 10^(-5) M abscisic acid (ABA) in the presence of 90 g/L of sucrose. A corresponding accumulation of the RNA of the rab 16A gene (a rice gene induced by ABA and water stress) was detected in dried callus, mature seeds, and callus pretreated with 10^(-5) M ABA. Analysis of protein by two dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(2D-PAGE) demonstrated different protein patterns in dried callus pretreated with 10-s M ABA and 90 g/L of sucrose compared to callus dried without the pretreatment. Three different cDNA clones, pDHS1, pDHS2, and pDHS3 contained cDNA inserts in size of 3.8, 3.2, and 3.2 kilobase pairs, respectively, were isolated by using Nhe I fragment from rab 16A as a probe. All the three clones exhibited unique restriction maps.
