In this paper an overall study on non-contact surface strain measurement methods including a commercial system ARGUS and an in-house program AS lAS was performed. Measuring surface strain is very important to evaluate the formability of materials and to investigate their deformation characteristics. The influence of measuring equipment and method on determination of the limit strain was examined in a forming limit test. A new surface-strain measurement system ASIAS-bio was developed in this study which could use irregular grid pattern applied on the specimens by any method available. It was shown that this system is accurate enough compared with ARGUS system and can be used even in bad surface conditions such as rough surface, soft and wet surface like human soft tissues, hot forming, very large deformation, and so on.
