• The Role of IT Professionals’ Attitudes in Open Innovation Processes

        Juyeon Ham,Jae-Nam Lee 한국경영정보학회 2014 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.1

Recently, an innovation paradigm is shifting from a closed to an open innovation model, characterized by the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge not only to accelerate internal innovation but also to expand the markets for external use of innovation. However, the Not-Invented-Here (NIH), and Not-Sold-Here (NSH) or Only-Use-Here (OUH) syndromes are the most commonly faced problems in open innovation processes. Therefore, the aim of this study is not only to identify the factors that influence NIH and NSH/OUH attitudes in open innovation processes based on motivation theory with perceived organizational fairness and commitment, but also to investigate their impacts on NIH and NSH/OUH attitudes through an empirical research. The research model was analyzed with Visual PLS using survey data collected from IT professionals in Korea. The findings indicated that IT professionals’ perceived organizational fairness is negatively affected to NIH attitudes in open innovation process.

What Makes Open Innovation Processes Better? A Focus on IT Professionals' Attitudes

Ham, Juyeon,Kim, Dan J.,Choi, Byounggu,Lee, Jae-Nam The Korea Society of Management Information System 2015 Asia Pacific Journal of Information Systems Vol.25 No.2

A recent trend in innovation paradigm is the shift from closed innovation to open innovation principles. This trend is characterized by the use of purposive inflows and outflows of knowledge not only to accelerate internal innovation, but also to expand the markets for external use of innovation. However, the Not-Invented-Here (NIH), and Not-Sold-Here (NSH) or Only-Use-Here (OUH) syndromes are the most common challenges encountered in open innovation processes. Therefore, this study has the following main aims: 1) propose a research model that explains the factors that influence NIH and NSH/OUH attitudes based on motivation theory with perceived organizational fairness and commitment, 2) investigate their impacts on NIH and NSH/OUH attitudes, and 3) provide useful theoretical and practical insights. The proposed research model was empirically tested using survey data collected from information technology (IT) professionals in Korea. One of the major findings indicates that IT professionals' perceived organizational fairness has a negative effect on NIH attitudes in open innovation process. Theoretical and practical contributions of this study are also discussed.

      • Understanding Untactification in Contactless Shopping : Focusing on Affordance Theory

        Juyeon Ham,Seoyoun Lee,Younghoon Chang 한국경영정보학회 2021 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2021 No.11

The global pandemic has enormously changed people's consumption activities and business ecosystems. One of the most notable changes is the increase in contactless services due to social distancing, including kiosk orders at restaurants and coffee shops and cashier-free small stores. However, these services are still experimental or uncomfortable for some users, and this becomes the challenge for the transition to a digital society. In the context of the current New Normal state, where the untact interactions in response to the pandemic are highlighted, research on the concept of such non-face-to-face communications is still lacking. Therefore, this study uses the affordance theory to (1) define four types of untactification affordances in non-face-to-face shopping, and (2) determine how these types of affordance affect users' shopping engagement and continuous use intention. For this purpose, this study plans to collect and analyze data from users of F5 Future Store, a famous cashier-free convenience store brand in China.

Ginsenoside Rg3 and Korean Red Ginseng extract epigenetically regulate the tumor-related long noncoding RNAs RFX3-AS1 and STXBP5-AS1

Ham, Juyeon,Jeong, Dawoon,Park, Sungbin,Kim, Hyeon Woo,Kim, Heejoo,Kim, Sun Jung The Korean Society of Ginseng 2019 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.43 No.4

Background: Ginsenoside Rg3, a derivative of steroidal saponins abundant in ginseng, has a range of effects on cancer cells, including anti-cell proliferation and anti-inflammation activity. Here, we investigate two long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), STXBP5-AS1 and RFX3-AS1, which are hypomethylated and hypermethylated in the promoter region by Rg3 in MCF-7 cancer cells. Methods: The lncRNAs epigenetically regulated by Rg3 were mined using methylation array analysis. The effect of the lncRNAs on the apoptosis and proliferation of MCF-7 cells was monitored in the presence of Rg3 or Korean Red Ginseng (KRG) extract after deregulating the lncRNAs. The expression of the lncRNAs and their target genes was examined using qPCR and Western blot analysis. The association between the expression of the target genes and the survival rate of breast cancer patients was analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier Plotter platform. Results: STXBP5-AS1 and RFX3-AS1 exhibited anti- and pro-proliferation effects, respectively, in the cancer cells, and the effects of Rg3 and KRG extract on apoptosis and cell proliferation were weakened after deregulating the lncRNAs. Of the genes located close to STXBP5-AS1 and RFX3-AS1 on the chromosome, STXBP5, GRM1, RFX3, and SLC1A1 were regulated by the lncRNAs on the RNA and protein level. Breast cancer patients that exhibited a higher expression of the target genes of the lncRNAs had a higher metastasis-free survival rate. Conclusion: The current study is the first to identify lncRNAs that are regulated by the presence of Rg3 and KRG extract and that subsequently contribute to inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells.

      • Subjective perception patterns of online reviews: A comparison of utilitarian and hedonic values

        Ham, Juyeon,Lee, Kyungmin,Kim, Taekyung,Koo, Chulmo Elsevier 2019 Information processing & management Vol.56 No.4

Abstract

Online reviews are very important for the decision making of tourists, and such importance continues to grow as these reviews affect not only the tourism industry but also the operators of review platforms. Therefore, those factors that affect the perceived value of online reviews need to be investigated. Although the criteria and viewpoints for judging the value of these reviews may differ from one person to another, the existing studies on online reviews have not considered such differences. Therefore, this study aims to identify the differences in the patterns of the perceptions toward the utilitarian and hedonic values of online reviews. Building on a theoretical discussion of how information is processed during the decision making of individuals, this study develops a conceptual model that comprises three factors (i.e., the heuristic-reviewer, heuristic-review, and systematic-review factors) related to online reviews. For the data analysis, 2616 cases collected from Yelp.com were analyzed by using the fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis approach. The four patterns of perceptions toward the utilitarian value of online reviews (i.e., administrative reader, analytic reader, synthetic reader, and collaborative reader patterns) were derived. The three patterns of perceptions toward the hedonic value of these reviews (i.e., administrative-expertise-, synthetic-reviewer-, and nurturer-authenticity-focused readers) were also extracted. The results revealed some differences among those factors that influence the recognition of the utilitarian and hedonic values of online reviews.

Highlights

This study aims to identify the differences in the patterns of the perceptions toward the utilitarian and hedonic values of online reviews.

This study develops a conceptual model that comprises three factors related to online reviews.

2,616 cases collected from Yelp.com were analyzed by using the fsQCA approach.

The four patterns of perceptions toward the utilitarian value of online reviews were derived by applying Hermann's brain dominance model.

The three patterns of perceptions toward the hedonic value of online reviews were extracted.

Genome-Wide Methylation Analysis Identifies NOX4 and KDM5A as Key Regulators in Inhibiting Breast Cancer Cell Proliferation by Ginsenoside Rg3

Ham, Juyeon,Lee, Seungyeon,Lee, Hyunkyung,Jeong, Dawoon,Park, Sungbin,Kim, Sun Jung World Scientific Publishing Company 2018 The American journal of Chinese medicine Vol.46 No.6

Ginsenoside Rg3 is a key metabolite of ginseng and is known to inhibit cancer cell growth. However, the epigenetics of CpG methylation and its regulatory mechanism have yet to be determined. Genome-wide methylation analysis of MCF-7 breast cancer cells treated with Rg3 was performed to identify epigenetically regulated genes and pathways. The effect of Rg3 on apoptosis and cell proliferation was examined by a colony formation assay and a dye-based cell proliferation assay. The association between methylation and gene expression was monitored by RT-PCR and Western blot analysis. Genome-wide methylation analysis identified the “cell morphology”-related pathway as the top network. Rg3 induced late stage apoptosis but inhibited cell proliferation up to 60%. Hypermethylated TRMT1L, PSMC6 and NOX4 were downregulated by Rg3, while hypomethylated ST3GAL4, RNLS and KDM5A were upregulated. In accordance, downregulation of NOX4 by siRNA abrogated the cell growth effect of Rg3, while the effect was opposite for KDM5A. Notably, breast cancer patients with a higher expression of NOX4 and KDM5A showed poor and good prognosis of survival, respectively. In conclusion, Rg3 deregulated tumor-related genes through alteration of the epigenetic methylation level leading to growth inhibition of cancer cells.
