The purpose of this study is to assess the urban amenity on physical environmental factors, and to verify the effectiveness of the amenity map using correlation analysis of the environmental quality. The physical environmental factors were set to 4 items of green space, landscape, water environment and land use, and the items were composed of 11 detail factors. Based on the factors, GIS maps were constructed and the amenity map was produced using overlay analysis. The results of this study are as follow; the proportion of 1~2 ranks was 40.8% of total area around Dalseong-gun, Dong-gu, Suseong-gu. The lower 6~7 ranks in the amenity assessment was 5.7% of total area around Jung-gu, Seo-gu, Dalseo-gu. According to the results of correlation analysis between the amenity and environmental observed data, SO2 among the air pollution material had a negative correlation with amenity(r=-0.649, p<0.05). In case of water pollution, TN and TP had the negative correlations with amenity (r=-0.643, P<0.01; r=0.642, p<0.01).

In the central nervous system (CNS), giving rise to the diversity and the complexity of neurons is the spatial and temporal differentiation of neural stem cells and/or neural precursors. Here, we investigated the role of Jagged-mediated Notch signaling in the maintenance and differen-tiation of progenitor cells during late neurogenesis by ana-lyzing the expression patterns of zebrafish jagged homo-logues, and by injecting their morpholinos. Expression of both jagged2 and jagged1b mRNA in the CNS suggested that they might be involved in control of differentiating neural progenitors in which they are involved later in de-velopment. In Jagged2 and Jagged1b knock-down em-bryos, the overall rate of cell division dramatically de-creased, and the ectopic VeMe neurons were generated. The results suggest that Jagged-Notch signaling plays a critical role in the maintenance of proliferating neural pre-cursors, and that the generation of late-born neurons, es-pecially VeMe neurons, is regulated by the interplay be-tween Jagged2 and Jagged1b.

과체중 여성에서 L-carnitine과 Isoflavone 보충 섭취가 체중 및 내장지방 감소에 미치는 영향

This study was performed to examine the combined effects of L-carnitine and isoflavone supplementation on weight reduction and body fat distribution in overweight women. Overweight/obese women (body mass index > 23 ㎏/㎡) who were not diagnosed any type of diseases were included in this study and sixty subjects (41.1 ± 1.5 years, 25.9 ± 0.3 ㎏/㎡) were randomly assigned to a placebo (n = 30) or a supplement group (n = 30, L-carnitine 300 ㎎+isoflavone 40 ㎎/day). We measured anthropometric parameters, abdominal fat distribution by computerizd tomography and blood components before and after the 12 week intervention period. After the 12 weeks of supplementation, subjects in L-car-nitine and isoflavone supplement group showed a significant reduction of body weight (p < 0.001), body fat % (p < 0.05), and waist to hip ratio (p < 0.01) whereas placebo group did not show any changes. In a CT-scanned results, total fat area at L4 level was significantly reduced by 8.1 % (p < 0.01) with the reduction of visceral fat area (-11.1 %, p < 0.001) and subcutaneous fat area (-7.0%, p < 0.05) in the supplement group. The supplementation of L-carnitine and isoflavone showed the significant improvement of HDL-C (p < 0.01) and apoB (p < 0.05) concentrations, however, change values in those markers were not significant compared with those of the placebo group. In addition, a significant increase of adiponectin level (p < 0.001) was observed in the supplement group after the intervention. The result of present study demonstrated that supplementation of 300 ㎎ L-carnitine and 40 mg isoflavone per day for 12 weeks can give beneficial effects on weight reduction and visceral fat accumulation. These potential antiobesity supplement can produce more favorable effects when combined with lifestyle modification.

<P>Cultures of hepatocytes in spheroid form are known to maintain higher cell viability and exhibit better hepatocyte functions than those in monolayer cultures. In this study, a method for the formation of hepatocyte spheroids was developed using biodegradable polymer nanospheres. The addition of poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) nanospheres to hepatocyte cultures in spinner flasks increased the efficiency of hepatocyte spheroid formation (the number of cells in spheroids divided by the total cell number) as compared with hepatocyte cultures without nanospheres (control). The viability and mitochondrial activity of the hepatocyte spheroids in the nanosphere-added cultures were significantly higher than those in the control. In addition, the mRNA expression levels of albumin and phenylalanine hydroxylase, both of which are hepatocyte-specific proteins, were significantly higher in the nanosphere-added cultures than in the control. This new culture method improves upon the conventional method of forming hepatocyte spheroids in terms of spheroid formation efficiency, cell viability, and hepatocyte function. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Natural or man-made disasters are serious enough to paralyse the functions of the nation or regional distinct and affect the property and lives of numerous citizens. The first two hours after occurrence of the disaster are critical for determining death or permanent disabilities of the casualties. The current Disaster Medical Service(DMS) System in our country adopts mainly civil defense model which focuses the cause of the accident, compensation of the victims, or reconstruction. So in the initial phase of disaster, the appropriate rescue and emergency treatment is not provided effectively. In order to assess and reorganize the current status of DMS System in Korea, the Department of Emergency Medicine, Ajou University School of Medicine, planned and conducted an emergency response exercise in Suwon city on April 28, 1995. The exercise, which took place near the Kyunggido Culture and Art Center, coordinated the efforts of the Suwon Fire Department and other related agencies. As well as providing training on emergency response, the exercise was valuable for identifying areas of weakness which will be address in the future.

<P>Local invasiveness of malignant glioma is a major reason for the failure of current treatments including surgery and radiation therapy. Tetraarsenic oxide (As4O6 [TAO]) is a trivalent arsenic compound that has potential anticancer and antiangiogenic effects in selected cancer cell lines at a lower concentration than arsenic trioxide (As2O3 [ATO]), which has been more widely tested in vitro and in vivo. The authors tried to determine the cytotoxic concentration of TAO in malignant glioma cell lines and whether TAO would show anti-invasive effects under conditions independent of cell death or apoptosis.</P>
Analysis of Phenolic compound and isoflavone in various medicinal soybeans

Medicinal soybean, which has been proven to be effective in preventing cancer, heart disease, osteoporosis, and renal failure, is drawing people’s attention among other beans in recent days. This experiment was to examine the concentration of phenolic compounds and isoflavone in 53 kinds of soybeans cultivated and collected in Yeo-Ju, Gyeonggi-do region. The total average content of phenol is 29424.34㎍/g and the most and least phenol were detected in No. 35(814.98㎍/g) and No. 28(353.66㎍/g) respectively. Myricetin was detected the most resveratrol whereas detected the least amount which was less than 0.2% of the total amount among all medicinal soybean samples. Total average isoflavone content was 35910.56㎍/g and the most and least isoflavone was detected in No. 15 (996.66 ㎍/g ) and No.9 (476.18㎍/g )respectively . Malonylgenistin was detecteded the most genistein whereas detected the least amount which was less than 0.02 % of the total amount in all medicinal soybean samples. The result of this experiment is considered to be the basic data of the functional food manufacturing by utilizing domestic medicinal soybean.
