Parameters of soluble solids, amino acids, catechins, and color difference of 24 green tea samples from China and Korea were determined. The levels of soluble solids, amino acids, total catechins, and infusion lightness in tea samples from Korea were higher than those from China. Concentrations of epigallocatechin galate and epigallocatechin in teas from China were higher than tea samples from Korea. Geographical origin of teas from the 2 countries was discriminated using parameters of infusion lightness, gallocatechin, and total catechins and applying principal component analysis.

Peppers (Capsicum annum L.) were harvested from 523 different genotypes cultivated at the Pepper Experiment Station in Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Technology Administration of Yeongyang in the northeast region of Korea. The investigation of pepper with high carotenoids contents was quantitatively and qualitatively analysed by HPLC. The individual carotenoids were separated as capsanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, α-carotene and β-carotene by reverse-phase HPLC and identified with their external standards. The levels of total carotenoids and ASTA color values in 523 peppers were 0.5-84.8mg/100g of dry weight (DW) and 0.7-233.1, respectively. Individual carotenoid content and percentage of total carotenoid content were shown as follows: β-carotene (24.8%) (average 5.0 mg/100g DW) 〉 capsanthin (24.7%) (average 5.0 mg/100g DW) 〉 zeaxanthin (20.4%) (average 4.1 mg/100g DW) 〉 β-cryptoxanthin (14.8%) (average 3.0 mg/100g DW) 〉 lutein (13.3%) (average 2.7 mg/100g DW) 〉 α-carotene (2.0%) (average 0.4 mg/100g DW). As a result of plotting by using SIMCA, ASTA color values showed that the cluster is created.

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Asthma is an increasing global health problem, and novel strategies to prevent or ameliorate the condition are needed. Here, the effects of 80 % ethanol extracts of <I>Salvia plebeia</I> R. Br. (SE) on an induced inflammatory response were investigated.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P><I>Salvia plebeia</I> R. Br. inhibited production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as TNF-α and IL-6, as well as nitric oxide (NO) in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. NO and pro-inflammatory cytokine production was suppressed more effectively by SE of the aerial parts (SE-A) than of the roots (SE-R) of <I>S. plebeia</I>. In BEAS-2B cells, both SE-A and SE-R inhibited the increase in production of the inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-8. We also investigated the anti-asthmatic effects of SE in an ovalbumin (OVA)-induced BALB/c mouse model. SE-A treatment significantly reduced the number of airway eosinophils, IL-4 and IL-13 levels, mucus production, and inflammatory infiltration, as compared with the corresponding levels in the untreated, OVA-induced mice, and had similar effects to dexamethasone.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P><I>Salvia plebeia</I> ethanol extract ameliorated the induced inflammatory response in RAW 264.7 and BEAS-2B cells, with more effective inhibition noted for SE-A than for SE-R. SE-A treatment was effective in improving the histopathological changes in the lungs of asthma model mice via modulation of eosinophils and Th2 cytokines. These results suggest that SE-A can be considered as a therapeutic agent that can potentially relieve asthma.</P>

<P>The relative atomic fraction of Cu(In,Ga)Se<SUB>2</SUB> (CIGS) films is one of the most important measurements for the fabrication of CIGS thin film solar cells. However, the quantitative analysis of multi-element alloy films is difficult by surface analysis methods due to the severe matrix effect. In this study, the quantitative analysis of CIGS films was investigated by secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS). The atomic fractions of Cu, In, Ga and Se in the CIGS films were measured by alloy reference relative sensitivity factors derived from the certified atomic fractions of a reference CIGS film. The total ion intensities of the constituent elements were obtained by a total number counting method. The atomic fractions measured by SIMS were linearly proportional to those certified by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry using an isotope dilution method. The uncertainties were determined from the standard uncertainties in the measurements and those of a CIGS thin film certified reference material.</P>

Purpose: The patients treated with hemodialysis have been known to have a high 1-year mortality rate after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). We evaluated the clinical benefits of drug-eluting stent (DES), compared to bare-metal stent (BMS) in Korean hemodialysis patients. Methods: We studied 72 hemodialysis patients (M:F=49:23, age 60±11 years) treated with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) from January, 1999 to February, 2006. Forty four patients (M:F=28: 16, age 60±11 years) treated with DES and 28 patients (M:F=21:7, age 60±12 years) with BMS were enrolled. A composite of major adverse cardiac and cerebral endpoints (MACCE) was defined as all-cause death, myocardial infarction, stroke, and target-vessel revascularization (TVR). We compared the incidence of MACCE between DES and BMS group. Results: A composite of MACCE occurred in none in DES group (n=44) and 4 in BMS group (n=28) within 3 months after coronary stenting (Kaplan-Meier survival analysis: 0% vs 14%, respectively, p=0.02). After 3 months, there was no difference in the incidence of primary end points between two groups. Multi-vessel disease (OR 2.47, 95% CI 1.02-6.11, p<0.05) was associated with a significant increase in the incidence of MACCE within 18 months after coronary artery stenting Conclusion: DES may be superior to BMS in reducing adverse cardiac outcome at early period after coronary stenting in HD patients. However, this study showed no significant difference with the lapse of time.
