Two different organic-inorganic hybrid thin film transistors (OITFTs) with the structures of glass/ITO/ZnO/PMMA/Al (staggered structure) and glass/ITO/PMMA/ZnO/Al (inverted staggered structure), were fabricated and their electrical and structural properties were compared. The ZnO thin films used as active channel layers were deposited by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) method at a temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. To investigate the effect of the substrates on their properties, the ZnO films were deposited on bare glass, PMMA/glass and ITO/glass substrates and their crystal properties and surface morphologies were analyzed. The structural properties of the ZnO films varied with the substrate conditions. The ZnO film deposited on the ITO/glass substrate showed better crystallinity and morphologies, such as a higher preferred c-axis orientation, lower FWHM value and larger particle size compared with the one deposited on the PMMA/glass substrate. The field effect mobility ($\mu$), threshold voltage ($V_T$) and $I_{on/off}$ switching ratio for the OITFT with the staggered structure were about $0.61\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, 5.5 V and $10^2$, whereas those of the OITFT with the inverted staggered structure were found to be $0.31\;cm^2/V{\cdot}s$, 6.8 V and 10, respectively. The improved electrical properties for the staggered OITFTs may originate from the improved crystal properties and larger particle size of the ZnO active layer.

Background/Aims: Rupture of gastric varices was one of the most dreadful complications of cirrhosis. Recently, a new interventional procedure, balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (B-RTO) was introduced for the treatment of gastric variceal bleeding. This study was performed to evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of B-RTO in the treatment of gastric varices with gastro-renal shunts. Methods: From March 2000 to June 2003, we performed B-RTO in 17 patients with gastric varices and gastrorenal shunts. All patients had history or high risk factors of gastric variceal bleeding. For the evaluation of therapeutic efficacy, we performed esophago-gastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and computed tomography (CT) at 1, 6 and 12 months after B-RTO. Successful B-RTO was judged by combined CT findings and EGD findings (disappearance of gastric varices or markedly reduced gastric variceal size or bleeding risk) during follow-up periods (1-14 months, mean:6.18). We analyzed the clinical factors related to clinical success of B-RTO. Results: Technical success were achieved in all patients except one (94.1%). Gastric varices were disappeared or decreased after B-RTO in 13 patients (81.2%). Complications related to procedure included transient hematuria (n=5), puncture site oozing (n=1) and partial splenic infarction (n=1), and all were conservatively managed. During the follow up periods, neither significant hepatic nor renal functional damages occurred. Statistically, no significant factors related with B-RTO success. Conclusions: B-RTO is effective and safe in the management of gastric varices in cirrhotic patients with gastrorenal shunt. Korean J Gastroenterol 2004;43:196-203)

<P>The purpose of this study is to propose a method of environment assessment in the field of building materials within Korea Green Building Certification (G-SEED). The method of environment assessment in the field of building materials was examined using LEED of the United States and BREEAM of the United Kingdom, the representative environment-friendly building certification systems in other countries. Especially, each revision of BREEAM was investigated for assessment methods such as environment assessment guidelines and assessment programs. In addition, assessment process and items were analyzed in relation to BREEAM. As a result, for environment assessment in the field of building materials within G-SEED, the method of connecting essential elements such as building material assessment guidelines and database networks with G-SEED was proposed.</P>
A Study on the Design of Humane Animal Care System and Java Implementation

Nowadays, the number of pets in the Republic of Korea (ROK) is continuously growing, and people's perception of animals is changing. Accordingly, new systems and services for them are emerging. Despite such changes, there are still many serious problems such as animal cruelty, abandonment, and factory-type breeding places. In this study, we have conducted a research on the design of a humane animal care system and its implementation with Java. The methodology involved in the design will enable managing animals' safety and health by systematically categorizing and studying each health-related issue for protection. Moreover, with this methodology, animals can avert risks through periodic examinations, and the analyzed data will be useful in managing animals efficiently. Thus, this paper proposes a system that monitors whether the owners actually carry out such obligation. Authors expect this convenient, easily accessible system to lead to a more humane approach to the animals they own. The authors plan to establish an animal care network together with local animal associations for the active promotion of the system implemented in this study, in the hope that the network will be extended nationwide.

<P>The purpose of this study is to assess environmental friendliness of passive apartment house based on major building materials in Korea. To accomplish this, stage-wise quantity information of life cycle and energy consumption data were established on major materials through theoretical consideration on life cycle assessment. In addition, basic unit database from Korean LCI DB was utilized to assess and analyze characterization value of global warming assessment. As a result, the value of global warming was smaller in passive apartment house in comparison to general apartment house. As the effect of building materials in construction stage was analyzed to be greater than the effect of energy consumption in operation stage, development of diverse building materials taking environmental impact into account is deemed necessary.</P>
