Three ecotypes of tomato (Ogata Zuiko, Moneymaker and Roma) were grown in different seasons. The dry matter accumulation and its partition and the leaf area expansion were compared. Parallel with the growth analysis, the yield was compared udner both the soil and solution culture. The differential growth occured between the cropping seasons and among the three cultivars. The partition of photoassimilate into fruit occurred sufficiently in Monymaker than in the other two cultivars. According this fact, Moneymaker seemed to be a heat tolerant cultivar. The behaviour of growth parameters differed with seasons and cultivars. RGR was affected by NAR rather than LAR because the seasonal changes of RGR were fitter with NAR than with LAR. Although the lower lower contribution of LAR to RGR, LAR seemed to be more influenced by LWR than SLA. There were no obvious differences among cultivars between the solution concentration in yield. Moneymaker showed the tendency to early flowering.

<P>The recently bred Korean strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) cultivar 'Sulhyang' accounts for more than 83% of the strawberry cultivation area in Korea. Although strawberry growth properties vary among cultivars, knowledge related to those of 'Sulhyang' remains insufficient. We examined gas exchange characteristics in leaves of this cultivar in autumn and winter to obtain basic data related to this cultivar. The light saturation point of the net photosynthetic rate (P-n) at 25 degrees C leaf temperature and 400 mu mol mol(-1) CO2 was about 1750-2000 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) PPFD. The optimum leaf temperature of P-n was about 29 degrees C, but values did not differ greatly between 19 degrees C and 31 degrees C, at 1200 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) PPFD and 400 mu mol mol(-1) CO2. These results indicate that a high light condition is the most important factor affecting the strawberry cultivation in plastic houses and that temperature is the second most important. Results show that P-n did not saturate at 1400 mu mol mol(-1) CO2 under 1200 mu mol m(-2) s(-1) PPFD and 25 degrees C leaf temperature, with its enrichment effect as high as 60-80% (P-n at 1400 vs. 400 mu mol mol(-1) CO2). The P-n and dark respiration rate (R-d) among the first to fifth leaves from the top expanded leaf showed no great difference. However, P-n was generally higher in autumn plants at initial flowering than in winter plants at vigorous fruit setting. These findings constitute important fundamental information to support the technological development of strawberry cultivation, especially of 'Sulhyang'.</P>
