Vol.24 No.3

This collaborative autoethnography delves into the educational experiences of three master’s students majoring in Anthropology of Education. We, as researcher-participants, utilized our self-narratives and collaborative in-depth interviews to shed light on the complexities of becoming full-time graduate students. Our qualitative investigation showed that all three of us had experienced instances of educational inequality in and out of secondary schools. Those negative experiences were followed by academic curiosity, which in turn led to our aspirations to explore the root causes, processes, and solutions of the educational inequality after entering college. Also, using the metaphors of “street smart,” “volunteer,” and “megaphone” our narratives represent the desire to create specific types of identity while studying in graduate school. However, various challenges that had risen from our in-between position as students and professionals resulted in the complexity of constructing our imagined futures. Exploring the educational experiences of three graduate students through collaborative autoethnography, we found out a broader social context with regard to the hardships that Korean graduate students are facing. Specifically, the professional identity of graduate students is hardly recognized and most students are having difficulties in looking for employment after graduation. Based on these findings from our work, suggestions are provided for future research to examine the identity formation of diverse full-time graduate students in Korea considering the current higher education environment.

Purpose: This study is a descriptive research study intended to confirm the effect of COVID-19 related efficacy of infection prevention activity, fear, and crisis communication skills on the importance of newly infectious dis-ease response capability of the nursing students. Method: The subjects were 266 3rd and 4th year students enrolled in the Department of Nursing at a univer-sity located in City I of Province J. The data collection was conducted from June 14 to June 27, 2020, and the data analysis method was the SPSS/WIN 23.0 using frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation, Independ-ent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and the multiple regression analysis was per-formed. Results: As a result of this study, the importance of newly infectious disease response capability turned out to have a statistically significant positive correlation with the efficacy of infection prevention activity, fear, and crisis communication skills. The importance of newly infectious disease response capability included the efficacy of infection prevention activity(β=.365, p<.001), crisis communication skills(β=.212, p<.001), and fear(β=.130, p<.001) .045), while the explanatory power was 30.0%. Conclusion: This study confirmed that the nursing students' COVID-19 related efficacy of infection prevention activity, fear, and crisis communication skills were the factors influencing the importance of newly infectious disease response capability related to COVID-19. Among which, it is necessary to develop an infection prevention activity support program to strengthen the efficacy of infection prevention activity yielding the largest impact.

Effect of Sedatives on In-hospital and Long-term Mortality of Critically Ill Patients Requiring Extended Mechanical Ventilation for ≥ 48 Hours

        Lee Hannah,Choi Seongmi,Jang Eun Jin,Lee Juhee,Kim Dalho,Yoo Seokha,Oh Seung-Young,Ryu Ho Geol 대한의학회 2021 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.36 No.34

Background: The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation between sedatives and mortality in critically ill patients who required mechanical ventilation (MV) for ≥ 48 hours from 2008 to 2016. Methods: We conducted a nationwide retrospective cohort study using population-based healthcare reimbursement claims database. Data from adult patients (aged ≥ 18) who underwent MV for ≥ 48 hours between 2008 and 2016 were identified and extracted from the National Health Insurance Service database. The benzodiazepine group consisted of patients who were administered benzodiazepines for sedation during MV. All other patients were assigned to the non-benzodiazepine group. Results: A total of 158,712 patients requiring MV for ≥ 48 hours were admitted in 55 centers in Korea from 2008 to 2016. The benzodiazepine group had significantly higher in-hospital and one-year mortality compared to the non-benzodiazepine group (37.0% vs. 34.3%, 55.0% vs. 54.4%, respectively). Benzodiazepine use decreased from 2008 to 2016, after adjusting for age, sex, and mean Elixhauser comorbidity index in the Poisson regression analysis (incidence rate ratio, 0.968; 95% confident interval, 0.954–0.983; P < 0.001). Benzodiazepine use, older age, lower case volume (≤ 500 cases/year), chronic kidney disease, and higher Elixhauser comorbidity index were common significant risk factors for in-hospital and oneyear mortality. Conclusion: In critically ill patients undergoing MV for ≥ 48 hour, the use of benzodiazepines for sedation, older age, and chronic kidney disease were associated with higher in-hospital mortality and one-year mortality. Further studies are needed to evaluate the impact of benzodiazepines on the mortality in elderly patients with chronic kidney disease requiring MV for ≥ 48 hours.

      • Comment on “Influence of induced interactions on superfluid properties of quasi-two-dimensional dilute Fermi gases with spin-orbit coupling”

        Lee, Juhee,Kim, Dong-Hee American Physical Society 2016 Physical Review A Vol.94 No.6

In an article in 2013, Caldas et al. [Phys. Rev. A 88, 023615 (2013)] derived analytical expressions of the induced interaction within the Gorkov-Melik-Barkhudarov correction in quasi-two-dimensional Fermi gases with Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). They claimed that the induced interaction is exactly the same as the one for the case without SOC when the SOC is weak, and in the region of strong SOC, it starts from a reduced value and then recovers the value for the zero SOC in the limit of large SOC. We point out that their calculations contain critical errors and inconsistencies that significantly affect the basis of these claims.

Hydrogel Tip Integration Onto Tipless Silicon Cantilevers for Atomic Force Microscopy and Its Facile Regeneration

Lee, Jaeseol,Kim, Doyoon,Yoon, Yeowon,Lee, Bora,Ko, Juhee,Lee, Jungchul Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers 2018 Journal of microelectromechanical systems Vol.27 No.2

In this letter, we report hydrogel tip attachment onto tipless silicon cantilevers by ultraviolet curing of hydrogel filled into an elastomeric tip mold, for the first time. By mechanically deforming the tip mold or changing the mold design, attachment of various tip shapes is demonstrated. Hybrid atomic force microscope cantilevers of their tip and beam being hydrogel and silicon are used for imaging various inorganic substrates and HeLa cells. Since the hydrogel tip can be selectively removed by piranha solution, hydrogel tip regeneration is also realized by removing the used hydrogel tip and re-attaching a new tip. [2018-0013]

      • Cell motility regulation on a stepped micro pillar array device (SMPAD) with a discrete stiffness gradient

Lee, Sujin,Hong, Juhee,Lee, Junghoon The Royal Society of Chemistry 2016 SOFT MATTER Vol.12 No.8

Our tissues consist of individual cells that respond to the elasticity of their environment, which varies between and within tissues. To better understand mechanically driven cell migration, it is necessary to manipulate the stiffness gradient across a substrate. Here, we have demonstrated a new variant of the microfabricated polymeric pillar array platform that can decouple the stiffness gradient from the ECM protein area. This goal is achieved via a 'stepped'' micro pillar array device (SMPAD) in which the contact area with the cell was kept constant while the diameter of the pillar bodies was altered to attain the proper mechanical stiffness. Using double-step SU-8 mold fabrication, the diameter of the top of every pillar was kept uniform, whereas that of the bottom was changed, to achieve the desired substrate rigidity. Fibronectin was immobilized on the pillar tops, providing a focal adhesion site for cells. C2C12, HeLa and NIH3T3 cells were cultured on the SMPAD, and the motion of the cells was observed by time-lapse microscopy. Using this simple platform, which produces a purely physical stimulus, we observed that various types of cell behavior are affected by the mechanical stimulus of the environment. We also demonstrated directed cell migration guided by a discrete rigidity gradient by varying stiffness. Interestingly, cell velocity was highest at the highest stiffness. Our approach enables the regulation of the mechanical properties of the polymeric pillar array device and eliminates the effects of the size of the contact area. This technique is a unique tool for studying cellular motion and behavior relative to various stiffness gradients in the environment.

Study of Multi-twin Defects Generated in GaAs and InP Films on Nanopatterned Si via Transmission Electron Microscopy

        Lee Juhee,Shin Hyunsu,Lee In-Geun,Ko Dae-Hong 한국물리학회 2020 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.77 No.7

We investigated defect generation in GaAs and InP on various blanket Si substrates and Si patterns with nanosized trench structures via transmission electron microscopy. The dependences of types of defects on the substrate orientation and the pattern size in GaAs and InP on nanosized patterns were analyzed. Defects that formed in a specific direction, and shapes similar to those stacking faults or twin boundaries (TWs) were confirmed. Moreover, we observed that unusual directional defects could not be effectively trapped by using aspect ratio trapping techniques owing to their various angles. The multi-twin (M-TW) angles generated from the original TW were calculated and projected in a pole figure by using the stereographic projection technique. Moreover, M-TW defects were illustrated via 3D computer graphics simulations.
