A Proposal for Lower-Extremity Motor Function Rehabilitation Based on Preliminary Observation on the Abnormal Co-contraction Patterns of Ankle Muscles in Post-stroke Patients

        JongMin Lim 대한스포츠물리치료학회 2020 정형스포츠물리치료학회지 Vol.16 No.1

Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the differences in the co-contraction index of ankle muscles’ activities and proposed the rehabilitation methods in terms of special physical education based on the clinical findings. Methods: A total of ten participants (5 stroke patients and 5 normal adults) were participated in this study. Their two ankle muscles (tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius muscles) were measured by electromyography (EMG) during the gait cycle and then, the muscle activities were calculated as a co-contraction index (CCI). Finally, the indexes between stroke patients and normal adults were compared. Results: As a result, CCI during the stance phase in the gait cycle was significantly higher in stroke patients than normal adults (p=.047). In addition, each group showed a significant difference in CCI between the stance and swing phase through within-group analysis (p=.043). Conclusion: In this study, stroke patients showed a higher CCI during the gait cycle, especially, in the stance phase. In conclusion, when considering the higher CCI would provide double-sidedness; 1) a demerit is the higher CCI would decrease in the mobility of ankle joint, whereas, 2) a merit is to increase in the stability of the ankle joint to protect fall-down, I proposed that as a lower-extremity rehabilitation method, sports activity, and aerobic exercise, using an online virtual reality technology will be necessary to ensure the safety of sports game as well as the enjoyment to maximize the quality of post-stroke life. Therefore, professionals in the field of special physical education should actively enlarge their education and development skills to the field of new biotechnology.

Numerical estimation of errors in drop angle during drop tests of IP-Type metallic transport containers for radioactive materials

Lim, Jongmin,Yang, Yun Young,Lee, Ju-chan Korean Nuclear Society 2021 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.53 No.6

For industrial package (IP)-type transport containers for radioactive materials, a free drop test should be conducted under regulatory conditions. Owing to various uncertainties observed during the drop test, errors in drop angles inevitably occur. In IP-type metal transport containers in which the container directly impacts onto a rigid target without any shock absorbing materials, the error in the drop angle due to a slight misalignment makes a significant difference from the ideal drop. In particular, in a vertical drop, the error in the drop angle causes a strong secondary impact. In this paper, a numerical method is proposed to estimate the error in the drop angle occurring during the test. To determine this error, an optimization method accompanying a computational drop analysis is proposed, and a surrogate model is introduced to ensure calculation efficiency. Effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by performing the verification and comparison between the test and the analysis applied with the drop angle error.

        Jongmin Lim,Bumchul Yoon 대한스포츠물리치료학회 2018 정형스포츠물리치료학회지 Vol.14 No.2

Purpose: Lifestyle intervention (LSI) provides basic recommendations that improve the quality of life and health of patients with minor disabilities. The LSI intervention strategies are associated with active living, healthy weight, healthy eating, and emotional stability. These intervention strategies can change an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy lifestyle and provide important health care information. Main issue: This study focused on a new LSI-based knee rehabilitation protocol and proved the effect of exercise prescription on the knee. The clinical significance of this study demonstrated that continuous rehabilitation, effective rehabilitation, and recurrence prevention can be achieved by prescribing the appropriate exercise for patients after discharge. Therefore, practical lifestyle medicine knowledge and information are provided by the home-based rehabilitation self-exercise program with the new LSI-based knee rehabilitation protocol. Conclusions: The LSI-based protocol can improve and maintain health conditions and knee function. With the aim of improving self-care abilities, this program is expected to make significant contributions recurrence prevention, reduced mortality, and improved quality of life, physical function, and fitness.

ECR plasma pretreatment for ZnO epitaxy

Jongmin Lim,Chongmu Lee 한국물리학회 2004 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.44 No.52

The eects of precleaning the substrate on the epitaxial growth of ZnO were investigated. Dry cleaning techniques employing argon, oxygen, and hydrogen ECR plasmas were employed, respectively, to remove organic contaminants and native oxides on sapphire and silicon substrates prior to the growth of the ZnO lm by atomic layer epitaxy. The incubation period for ZnO nucleation was measured by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Auger electron emission spectroscopic analysis (AES) to investigate the incubation period for ZnO nucleation. ECR plasma pretreatment reduced the cleaning eciency. Oxygen ECR plasma pretreatment was more eective than any other plasma pretreatment because oxygen ECR plasma treatment increased the hydroxyl packing density at the substrate surface, and its eects on sapphire substrates were especially prominent.

Noninvasive Cortical Stimulation for the Motor Function Rehabilitation of the Elderly with Chronic Back Pain : Preliminary Feasibility Study

        JongMin Lim 대한스포츠물리치료학회 2020 정형스포츠물리치료학회지 Vol.16 No.1

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) on pain intensity and functional strength in the elderly with chronic back pain. Methods: Sixteen elderly (72 ± 5.16 yrs) with chronic back pain participated in this randomized double-blinded crossover study. Each participant received both sham and 2-mA anodal currents over left dlPFC (cathode over the seventh cervical spinous process) for 20 min during 2 weeks for each current type with a washout period of 2 days between two different current stimulation periods. Pain intensity, functional lift strength, and the fear-avoidance response of all the participants were evaluated. Results: There were no significant differences in all pain-related variables between the 2mA stimulation period and the sham stimulation period. However, for results by within-group analysis in each stimulation period, we found significant improvements in pain intensity (p=.02), functional strength, (p=.006) and fear-avoidance response (p=.002) only after 2mA stimulation period, while there were no significant changes after sham stimulation. Conclusion: The current study demonstrated that anodal tDCS over dlPFC improve the painful feelings, followed by the functional strength for lifting task.

A semi-single-loop method using approximation of most probable point for reliability-based design optimization

        Lim, Jongmin,Lee, Byungchai Springer-Verlag 2016 Structural and multidisciplinary optimization Vol.53 No.4

<P>A semi-single-loop structure for an efficient reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) is proposed in this study. This structure makes up for the weaknesses of the double-loop method and the single-loop method. In the double-loop method, a heavy computational cost could be required due to an inherent nature of a nested structure. The single-loop method lacks robustness, which means its performance is sensitively affected by several factors. A decoupled method has also been developed in an effort to improve the efficiency of RBDO. Although it separates the nested structure, it retains a double-loop structure. In the semi-single-loop method, a sensitivity analysis of the reliability analysis result is performed in order to approximate a most probable point (MPP). According to the validity of the approximation, the approximated MPP is used for the evaluation of probabilistic constraints. As long as the approximation of MPP is valid, the proposed method has a complete single-loop structure with great efficiency and assured accuracy. If the approximation of MPP loses its validity, a fast reliability analysis is carried out by selecting the approximated MPP as a starting point. The robustness and accuracy of the proposed method are fully ensured due to the concept of checking the validity of the approximated MPP. Numerical examples are tested to verify these advantages of the proposed method and to compare the results here to those of existing RBDO methods.</P>

Effects of Abdominal Core Muscle Traning on the Balance Ability and Respiratory Function in the Healthy Males

        JongMin Lim 대한스포츠물리치료학회 2022 정형스포츠물리치료학회지 Vol.18 No.1

Purpose: To date, many previous studies on core muscle training have demonstrated its effectiveness on motor performance. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of abdominal core training on balance ability and pulmonary function for smokers. Methods: Eight healthy males (age: 24.75±6.60), smoking for more than three years participated in this study. Balance ability and pulmonary function were measured before and after 4-week intervention period and compared. The intervention was conducted twice a week during a total of 4 weeks Results: There was only significant change in expiratory minute ventilation (VE, P<.001), while balance ability and other pulmonary tests (expiratory and inspiratory vital capacities, expiratory reserve volume, inspiratory minute ventilation and tidal volume) did not showed significant changes. Conclusion: Through the results of this study, it was confirmed that abdominal core training had a preferential effect on respiratory function over balance ability, and in particular, a preferential change was found in exhalation rather than inhalation. Therefore, it was concluded that abdominal core training would be useful in patients with pulmonary disease.
