New neurons are continuously added in specific regions of the adult mammalian central nervous system. These neurons are derived from multipotent stem cells whose identity has been enigmatic. In this work, we present evidence that ependymal cells are neural stem cells. Ependymal cells give rise to a rapidly proliferating cell type that generates neurons that migrate to the olfactory bulb. In response to spinal cord injury, ependymal cell proliferation increases dramatically to generate migratory cells that differentiate to astrocytes and participate in scar formation. These data demonstrate that ependymal cells are neural stem cells and identify a novel process in the response to central nervous system injury.

Regional Integration and Productivity Growth : The Case of EU

Recent research has emphasised the role of trade in productivity growth. The purpose of the present paper is to investigate how regional integration, and the different treatment of member and non-member imports, affects the relation between imports and productivity growth. We focus on the European Union and find intra-union imports to have more of an effect on total factor productivity growth than imports from the outside of the EU, even if only developed non-member countries are considered.

Ethylene is a major petrochemical for which biotechnological production methods are an attractive alternative. Here we use a system based on a bacterial ethylene forming enzyme (EFE) expressed in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Metabolic modelling performed in a previous study identified re-oxidation of NADH as a factor limiting ethylene production in S. cerevisiae. In line with this, we here found that strains with multicopy plasmid expression of the heterologous oxidases nox and Aox1 led to significantly increased specific ethylene productivity, up 12 and 36%, respectively, compared to the control strain with empty plasmid. However the productivity and yield was only improved in the AOX expressing strain compared to that of the control strain. Both oxidase expressing strains also exhibited increased respiration rates compared to the reference strain, with specific oxygen consumption rates being roughly doubled in both strains. The AOX strain furthermore exhibited a significant increase in the EFE substrate 2-oxoglutarate formation compared to the reference strain, linking an improvement in ethylene production to both increased respiratory capacity and increased substrate availability, thereby corroborating our previous finding.
The efficiency of passive confinement in CFT columns

The paper describes the mechanical behavior of short concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns with circular section. The efficiency of the steel tube in confining the concrete core depending on concrete strength and the steel tube thickness was examined. Fifteen columns were tested to failure under concentric axial loading. Furthermore, a mechanical model based on the interaction between the concrete core and the steel tube was developed. The model employs a volumetric strain history for the concrete, characterized by the level of applied confining stress. The situation of passive confinement is accounted for by an incremental procedure, which continuously updates the confining stress. The post-yield behavior of the columns is greatly influenced by the confinement level and is related to the efficiency of the steel tube in confining the concrete core. It is possible to classify the post-yield behavior into three categories: strain softening, perfectly plastic and strain hardening behavior. The softening behavior, which is due to a shear plane failure in the concrete core, was found for some of the CFT columns with high-strength concrete. Nevertheless, with a CFT column, it is possible to use high-strength concrete to obtain higher load resistance and still achieve a good ductile behavior.

In order to help decision-makers in the early design phase to improve and make more costefficientsystem safety and reliability baselines of aircraft design concepts, a method(Multi-objective Optimization for Safety and Reliability Trade-off) that is able to handletrade-offs such as system safety, system reliability, and other characteristics, for instanceweight and cost, is used. Multi-objective Optimization for Safety and Reliability Trade-offhas been developed and implemented at SAAB Aeronautics. The aim of this paper is todemonstrate how the implemented method might work to aid the selection of optimaldesign alternatives. The method is a three-step method: step 1 involves the modelling ofeach considered target, step 2 is optimization, and step 3 is the visualization and selectionof results (results processing). The analysis is performed within Architecture Design andPreliminary Design steps, according to the company's Product Development Process. Thelessons learned regarding the use of the implemented trade-off method in the three casesare presented. The results are a handful of solutions, a basis to aid in the selection of adesign alternative. While the implementation of the trade-off method is performed forcompanies, there is nothing to prevent adapting this method, with minimal modifications,for use in other industrial applications.
