<P>Individuals who traveled to contaminated areas after the Fukushima nuclear accident have concerns about the health effects. However, medical follow-up for any adverse health effects will be difficult without personal dose measurements. Cytogenetic biodosimetry is a reasonable method of assessing absorbed doses retrospectively. We analyzed dicentric chromosomes for 265 Fukushima travelers, mostly journalists and rescue workers, who had been dispatched to northeastern Japan during the nuclear emergency. As a control group, 37 healthy volunteers who had not visited Japan since the accident were enrolled. Yields of dicentrics and absorbed doses calculated from a dose-response calibration curve for travelers and the control group were compared. The cut-off level for dicentric chromosomes in the controls was 3.5 per 1000 cells. Of the 265 travelers, 31 had elevated numbers of dicentrics (High-Dics group) while 234 were below the cut-off (Normal-Dics group). All but one of the individuals in the High-Dics group also reported a significantly higher number of medical exposures to radiation within the past three years compared with the Normal-Dics or control groups. The 225 travelers with no history of medical exposure showed no difference of dicentrics yield compared to the control group. Our data indicate that Fukushima travel alone did not enhance the yield of dicentrics.</P>
Understanding pre-structured motifs (PreSMos) in intrinsically unfolded proteins.

<P>Intrinsically unfolded proteins (IUPs) do not obey the golden rule of structural biology, 3D structure = function, as they manifest their inherent functions without resorting to three-dimensional structures. Absence of a compact globular topology in these proteins strongly implies that their ligand recognition processes should involve factors other than spatially well-defined binding pockets. Heteronuclear multidimensional (HetMulD) NMR spectroscopy assisted with a stable isotope labeling technology is a powerful tool for quantitatively investigating detailed structural features in IUPs. In particular, it allows us to delineate the presence and locations of pre-structured motifs (PreSMos) on a per-residue basis. PreSMos are the transient local structural elements that presage target-bound conformations and act as specificity determinants for IUP recognition by target proteins. Here, we present a brief chronicle of HetMulD NMR studies on IUPs carried out over the past two decades along with a discussion on the functional significance of PreSMos in IUPs.</P>

Enhancers have been conventionally perceived as cis-acting elements that provide binding sites for trans-acting factors. However, recent studies have shown that enhancers are transcribed and that these transcripts, called enhancer RNAs (eRNAs), have a regulatory function. Here, we identified putative eRNAs by profiling and determining the overlap between noncoding RNA expression loci and eRNA-associated histone marks such as H3K27ac and H3K4me1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cell lines. Of the 132 HCC-derived noncoding RNAs, 74 overlapped with the eRNA loci defined by the FANTOM consortium, and 65 were located in the proximal regions of genes differentially expressed between normal and tumor tissues in TCGA dataset. Interestingly, knockdown of two selected putative eRNAs, THUMPD3-AS1 and LINC01572, led to downregulation of their target mRNAs and to a reduction in the proliferation and migration of HCC cells. Additionally, the expression of these two noncoding RNAs and target mRNAs was elevated in tumor samples in the TCGA dataset, and high expression was associated with poor survival of patients. Collectively, our study suggests that noncoding RNAs such as THUMPD3-AS1 and LINC01572 (i.e., putative eRNAs) can promote the transcription of genes involved in cell proliferation and differentiation and that the dysregulation of these noncoding RNAs can cause cancers such as HCC.
Atmospheric Aerosol Detection And Its Removal for Satellite Data

Satellite imagery may contain large regions covered with atmospheric aerosol. A highresolution satellite imagery affected by non-homogenous aerosol cover should be processed for land cover study and perform the radiometric calibration that will allow its future application for Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite (KOMPSAT) data. In this study, aerosol signal was separated from high resolution satellite data based on the reflectance separation method. Since aerosol removal has a good sensitivity over bright surface such as man-made targets, aerosol optical thickness (AOT) retrieval algorithm could be used. AOT retrieval using Look-up table (LUT) approach for utilizing the transformed image to radiometrically compensate visible band imagery is processed and tested in the correction of satellite scenery. Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), EO-l/HYPERION data have been used for aerosol correction and AOT retrieval with different spatial resolution. Results show that an application of the aerosol detection for HYPERION data yields successive aerosol separation from imagery and AOT maps are consistent with MODIS AOT map.
Genetically Engineered Myoblast Sheet for Therapeutic Angiogenesis

<P>Peripheral arterial disease is a common manifestation of systemic atherosclerosis, which results in more serious consequences of ischemic events in peripheral tissues such as the lower extremities. Cell therapy has been tested as a treatment for peripheral ischemia that functions by inducing angiogenesis in the ischemic region. However, the poor survival and engraftment of transplanted cells limit the efficacy of cell therapy. In order to overcome such challenges, we applied genetically engineered cell sheets using a cell-interactive and thermosensitive hydrogel and nonviral polymer nanoparticles. C2C12 myoblast sheets were formed on Tetronic-tyramine (Tet-TA)-RGD hydrogel prepared through a highly efficient and noncytotoxic enzymatic reaction. The myoblast sheets were then transfected with vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plasmids using poly(β-amino ester) nanoparticles to increase the angiogenic potential of the sheets. The transfection increased the VEGF expression and secretion from the C2C12 sheets. The enhanced angiogenic effect of the VEGF-transfected C2C12 sheets was confirmed using an in vitro capillary formation assay. More importantly, the transplantation of the VEGF-transfected C2C12 sheets promoted the formation of capillaries and arterioles in ischemic muscles, attenuated the muscle necrosis and fibrosis progressed by ischemia, and eventually prevented ischemic limb loss. This paper describes controller development for a dynamic voltage compensator using a shunt diode converter and series inverter. The control system was designed using 1/4 period integrator and vector relationship between the supply voltage and load voltage. A simulation model and scaled hardware model were developed for analyzing performance of the controller and the whole system Both results confirm that the dynamic compensator can restore the load voltage under the fault of the distribution system
Seasonal changes of plant biomass at a constructed wetland in a livestock watershed area

<P> Monitoring was conducted to evaluate the seasonal changes in plant biomass in a free water surface constructed wetland (CW) located in Nonsan City, South Korea. Korea has temperate climate so plant growth is in the summer and senescence during the winter. Plant biomass measurements were taken during the plant life cycle from May to October 2009. Two dominant plant species, Phragmites australis and Miscanthus saccharifl orus, were analyzed for the measurement of the weight, height, count and total planted area. To assess the health of plants, the relative growth rate (RGR) was also calculated. The increase in plant productivity is attributed to the increase in the availability of water, light, temperature and nutrients. Results showed that high plant biomass rate was observed during the summer season. The growth of plants stopped during autumn while a gradual decrease of plant count was observed during the end of summer. Since summer season is a period of most nutrient loadings coming from the livestock wastewater treatment plant and stormwater runoff, high levels of nutrients subjected into a CW system thereby increasing plant biomass rate because many of the nutrients are assimilated and stored into the plant system. However, the RGR of plants decrease as plants age. </P>
