Music Perception Abilities of the Hearing Amplification System Users

Background and Objectives: Recently, the improvement of music perception abilities for emotional stability and high quality of life has become important for the hearing loss group. This study aimed to examine and compare the music perception abilities of the normal hearing (NH) and hearing amplification system (HAS) groups to find the needs and methods of music rehabilitation.Subjects and Methods: The data were collected from 15 NH adults (33.1±11.4 years) and 15 HAS adults (38.7±13.4 years), of whom eight wore cochlear implant [CI] systems and seven wore CI and hearing aid systems depending on pitch, melody, rhythm, timbre, emotional reaction, and harmony perception tests. A mismatch negativity test was also conducted, and attitudes toward and satisfaction with listening to music were measured.Results: The correction percentages for the NH and HAS groups were 94.0%±6.1% and 75.3%±23.2% in the pitch test; 94.0%±7.1% and 30.3%±25.9% in the melody test; 99.3%±1.8% and 94.0%± 7.6% in the rhythm test; 78.9%±41.8% and 64.4%±48.9% in the timbre test; 96.7%±10.4% and 81.7%±16.3% in the emotional reaction test; and 85.7%±14.1% and 58.4%±13.9% in the harmony test, respectively, showing statistical significance (<i>p</i><0.05). For the mismatch negativity test, the area of the waveform was smaller in the HAS groups than in the NH groups, with 70 dB of stimulation showing no statistical significance. The response rates for satisfaction with listening to music were 80% and 93.3% for the NH and HAS groups, showing no statistical significance.Conclusions: Although the HAS group showed lower music perception ability than the NH group overall, they showed a strong desire for music listening. Also, the HAS group revealed a higher degree of satisfaction even when listening to unfamiliar music played with unusual instruments. It is suggested that systematic and constant musical rehabilitation based on musical elements and different listening experiences will improve music perception qualities and abilities for HAS users.

<P>Abstract</P><P>Large-conductance Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>-activated K<SUP>+</SUP> (BK<SUB>Ca</SUB>) channels are activated by membrane depolarization and modulated by intracellular Ca<SUP>2+</SUP>. Here, we report the direct interaction of cereblon (CRBN) with the cytosolic carboxy-terminus of the BK<SUB>Ca</SUB> channel &agr; subunit (Slo). Rat CRBN contained the N-terminal domain of the Lon protease, a ‘regulators of G protein-signaling’ (RGS)-like domain, a leucine zipper (LZ) motif, and four putative protein kinase C (PKC) phosphorylation sites. RNA messages of rat cereblon (rCRBN) were widely distributed in different tissues with especially high-levels of expression in the brain. Direct association of rCRBN with the BK<SUB>Ca</SUB> channel was confirmed by immunoprecipitation in brain lysate, and the two proteins were co-localized in cultured rat hippocampal neurons. Ionic currents evoked by the rSlo channel were dramatically suppressed upon coexpression of rCRBN. rCRBN decreased the formation of the tetrameric rSlo complex thus reducing the surface expression of functional channels. Therefore, we suggest that CRBN may play an important role in assembly and surface expression of functional BK<SUB>Ca</SUB> channels by direct interaction with the cytosolic C-terminus of its &agr;-subunit.</P>

근래의 군사무기들은 적의 감시망을 피하여 성공적으로 임무를 수행하기 위해 스텔스(Stealth) 기능을 필수로 요한다. RCS를 줄이는 것만큼 IR 신호 억제(suppression)도 스텔스의 중요한 요소이며, 지금까지 다양한 방법이 연구되어 왔다. 그 방법들 가운데 능동적으로 IR 신호를 억제하는 방법으로 엔진과 그 주변, 그리고 배기가스에 물을 직접 분사하는 방법이 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 논문에서는 근래 물 분사를 통한 IR 신호 억제 연구가 수행된 군사무기체계를 함정과 항공기 두 분류로 나누고, 그 연구 동향을 알아보았다. Recent military weapons require stealth technology to conduct their mission successfully. In addition to reducing RCS(Radar cross section), suppressing IR signature is also a main component of stealth tech. So far various means have been developed to reduce IR signature, and one of the active ways is water spray applying to engine and its exhaust. Thus this paper deals with previous studies of a water spray method to the weapon system of battle ships and aircrafts.

신뢰성 있는 물 수요예측을 실시하기 위해서는 실측자료를 이용하여 다양한 수요구조의 변화를 합리적으로 반영할 수 있는 수요예측모형을 개발 활용하는 것이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 가정에서사용하고 있는 욕실 내 용수사용량 특성을 파악하기 위하여 전국 140여개 가구를 대상으로 전자식 유량계와 무선송신시스템이 결합된 원격측정시스템을 이용하여 실측자료를 취득하고, 이를 이용하여 각 사용량의 기준이 되는 원단위를 도출하였다. 향후 사용량 예측을 위하여 욕실 내 용수를 욕조용수와 세면용수로 구분하여 시계열 모형을 적용함으로써 물 수요관리 및 정책수립을 위한 정보로서 활용할 수 있도록 하였다. Analysis of influential factors on water consumption in households will help predicting the water demand of end-use in household and give an explanation to cause on the change of trend. In this research, the data are gathered by radio telemetry system which is combined electronic flow-meter and wireless communication system in 140 household in Korea. Using this data, we estimate for each residential type to determine liter per capita day. we used real data to predict bathtub and washbowl water-uses and compared the ordinary least square regression model and autoregressive regression error model. The results of this study can be applied in the planning stages of water and waste water facilities.

<P><B><I>Background/Aims:</I></B> Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is an emerging metabolic disease. Although it leads to severe hepatic diseases including steatohepatitis, cirrhosis, and hepatic cancer, little is known about therapy to prevent and cure hepatic steatosis, the first step of NAFLD. We conducted this investigation to unveil the mechanism of hepatic steatosis. <B><I>Methods:</I></B> We established a novel chronic NAFLD mouse model through whole body irradiation and verified the model through histological and biochemical analysis. To find molecular mechanism for hepatic steatosis, we analyzed hepatic transcriptomic profiles in this model and selected target molecule. To induce the expression of lactotransferrin (Ltf) and regulate the NAFLD, growth hormone (GH) and coumestrol was introduced to hepatocyte and mice. The universal effect of coumestrol was confirmed by administration of coumestrol to NAFLD mouse model induced by high-fructose, high-fat, and MCD diet. <B><I>Results:</I></B> It was observed that decreased hepatic Ltf expression led to excessive hepatic lipid accumulation in NAFLD mouse. Furthermore, we found that GH was decreased in irradiated mice and functioned as an upstream regulator of Ltf expression. It was observed that GH could stimulate Ltf expression and prevent uptake of dietary lipids in hepatocytes, leading to rescue of NAFLD. Finally, we suggested that coumestrol, a kind of isoflavonoid, could be used as an inducer of hepatic Ltf expression through cooperation with the GH signaling pathway both <I>in vitro</I> and <I>in vivo</I>. <B><I>Conclusions</I></B><I>:</I> Hepatic Ltf prevents hepatic steatosis through inhibition of dietary lipid uptake in radiation-induced NAFLD mouse model. We also suggest coumestrol as a drug candidate for prevention of NAFLD.</P>
