Ike McCaslin inherited the Indian heritage from Sam Fathers, the Indian of mixed-blood, and tried to embody it in his life, but didn't succeed. In spite of his negative social resistance, Ike is not free from the sin of his ancestors and from the capitalist ideology of America in the turn of the century. The Southern slavery is not a mutation of the American history but a remote cause of the American capitalism, and the conflicting elements in it is magnified and reproduced in the modernization process. But Ike's failure in taking over the Indian heritage means not necessarily Faulkner's failure. Faulkner, on the contrary, shows how hard to cure the Southern problems by Ike’s failure. And, also, he emphasizes the importance of Sam’s instruction as an alternative to the contradictions of the rapidly modernizing South. When the destruction of nature returns as a curse to the human being, the wisdom of co-existence of man and nature embodied in the Indian civilization can be a solution to it. The modern consciousness of the white to see nature as the other and to subordinate it to the human will is the cause of the ‘curse’ fell upon the modern society. The desire of the modern man to control nature gave rise to the slavery and the extinction of the Indian, and it is ultimately connected to the loss of humanity. It not only paralyzes the morality of each person but also threats the stability and existence of the community itself.

The diffusion and embeddedness of cyber technology and big data technology is recognized as an opportunity and infrastructure for firms to innovate and transform. But which digital strategies existed firms in manufacturing and other traditional industries can make is still a question under research. The paper pursues to answer this question from the perspectives of data ownership and key value propositions. From the dimension of data ownership and key value propositions, this research proposes a research framework to guide the analyses of digital transformation strategy. The four firms are used to identify five types of digital strategies, namely new product strategy, new value-added service strategy, customized strategy, product embedded in the platform, and platform service / product strategy based on the framework of digital transformation strategy decision. This research suggests that a firm can select the suitable strategy considering his key value proposition and ownership of data which the firm could use. The research contributes to the research and practices on the digitalization strategy and the digital transformation of firms, especially those in emerging economies.

Aim: To understand frontline nurses" experiences in South Korea and the United States (U.S.) during the early onset of COVID-19 Background: While the unprecedented nature of COVID-19 has left organizations and healthcare professionals ill-prepared, the responses varied across countries. We know little about nurses" experiences within their cultural context. This qualitative descriptive study fills that gap by exploring nurses" experiences working in hospitals during the first surge of COVID-19 in Korea and the U.S. Method: Nurses from Korea and the U.S. were recruited via social media between April and May 2020. We conducted semi-structured telephone interviews, which were audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated. We performed thematic analysis and the themes formulated within each content area were compared and synthesized into novel constellations using NVivo 12. Results: A total of 43 nurses from South Korea (n=21) and the U.S. (n = 22) participated. The commonly shared themes are 1) a sense of pride and duty, 2) increased workload and constant changes, and 3) perceived disposability. The differences were 1) sources of fear and 2) availability of personal protective equipment (PPE). Nurses" sense of duty and pride of the profession intensified during the pandemic, yet they shared perceived disposability by administrators. Workload also increased due to the constant changes without adequate staffing. Korean nurses reported stigma frequently, rather than fear, due to their proximity to patients and the potential to be carriers of the virus. However, the U.S. nurses reported fear due to the lack of PPE and the unknowns of the virus. Conclusions: Across the U.S. and Korea, nurses struggled with similar yet unique challenges during COVID-19 while managing stigma and fear. The findings from this study underline the importance of protecting nurses from physical and mental harms while addressing the cultural, organizational, and systems-level considerations for the current nursing work environments.

<P>The scaffold protein IQGAP1 is a ubiquitously expressed 190 kDa protein that participates in protein-protein interactions, integrating diverse signaling pathways. In this study, we examined the expression of IQGAP1 in sinonasal inverted papillomas (IP) and sinonasal squamous cell carcinomas (SCC), which include IP with SCC (IPcSCC) and SCC alone. We also tried to elucidate whether the amount of IQGAP1 expression is related with any clinicopathologic features of sinonasal SCCs.</P>
Focal Myositis of Unilateral Leg

Focal myositis is a rare, benign inflammatory pseudotumor of the skeletal muscle of unknown etiology. In Korea,there is no case report of focal myositis, which is not combined with connective tissue disease. We present an unusual case of focal myositis with ankle contracture, involving more than two muscles. A 26-year-old man visited our clinic complaining of right ankle contracture and leg muscle pain. Physical examination revealed no muscle weakness or any other neurological abnormality. T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging of the right leg demonstrated diff use high signal intensity of the right gastrocnemius, flexor digitorum longus, and tibialis anterior muscles. Needle electromyography showed profuse denervation potentials with motor unit action potentials of short duration and small amplitude from the involved muscles. All these findings suggested a diagnosis of focal infl ammatory myositis and the patient was put under oral prednisolone and physical therapy.
Active vibration control based on modal controller considering structure-actuator interaction

Active vibration control to suppress structural vibration of the flexible structure is investigated based on a new control strategy considering structure-actuator interaction. The experimental system consists of a clamped-free rectangular plate, a controller based on modal control switching, and a magnetostrictive actuator utilized for suppressing the vibrations induced by external excitation. For the flexible structure, its deformation caused by the external actuator will affect the active control effect. Thus interaction between structure and actuator is considered, and the interaction model based on magnetomechanical coupling is incorporated into the control system. Vibration reduction strategy has been performed resorting to the actuator in optimal position to suppress the specified modes using LQR (linear quadratic regulator) based on modal control switching. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Considering structure-actuator interaction (SAI) is a key procedure in controller design especially for flexible structures.
Signal Detection Based on a Decreasing Exponential Function in Alpha-Stable Distributed Noise

Signal detection in symmetric alpha-stable (SaS) distributed noise is a challenging problem. This paper proposes a detector based on a decreasing exponential function (DEF). The DEF detector can effectively suppress the impulsive noise and achieve good performance in the presence of SaS noise. The analytical expressions of the detection and false alarm probabilities of the DEF detector are derived, and the parameter optimization for the detector is discussed. A performance analysis shows that the DEF detector has much lower computational complexity than the Gaussian kernelized energy detector (GKED), and it performs better than the latter in SaS noise with small characteristic exponent values. In addition, the DEF detector outperforms the fractional lower order moment (FLOM)-based detector in SaS noise for most characteristic exponent values with the same order of magnitude of computational complexity.
