Between January 1999 and September 2001, 948 sera (120 from each province except 108 from Chungbuk) from 8 provinces were sampled from Korean goats. All the samples were serologically tested for Leptospira spp. By the microscopic agglutination test against four L. interrogans serovars including canicola, icterohaemorrhagiae, pomona and hardjo, 948 Korean goats were confirmed as 11 seropositives (1.2%) only infected with L. icterohemorrhagiae. All positive sera were collected from Gyeonggi (5), Gangwon (4) and Chungbuk (2). Titration of them were classified as 1:100 of 10 sera except one case with 1:200 from Gyeonggi. It was meaningful that the pathogen in Korean goats was mainly distributed in the northen part of the country. Consequently, the results in the study were confirmed and analyzed the recent status of infection of leptospirosisas zoonotic agentsome in Korean goats.

The 948 goat sera were serologically tested for ten pathogens including bovine viral diarrhea (BVD), bovine herpes virus type-1 (BHV-1) and parainfluenza virus type-3 (PI-3). By viral neutralizaion test, three pathogens including BVD virus, BHV-1, PI-3 were applied for screening each neutralizing antibody and its titration. Among 948 sera, there were 215 seropositives (22.7%) against BVD virus, 25 (2.6%) against BHV-1 virus, and 161 (17.0%) against PI-3 virus, respectively. In the seropositive cases to BVD virus, provincial prevalence of them were recorded as Gyeongnam(30.8%) for the highest one, while as Jeonbuk (15.8%) and Gyeongbuk(l6.7%) relatively for the lower ones. Among them, higher than 1:8 in antibody titration was classified as 74 cases (34.4%) which were suspected the cycle of its infection in their herds. Among the seropositives to BHV-1, it was relatively lower prevalence rate ranging from 1.7% to 6.7% that those of BVD virus and PI-3, but more importantly they were prevailing across the country. Most of the seropositive cases (42.9%) to PI-3 were classified as 1:4-1:16 in titration, but also distributed all around the country. The prevalence in goats varied according to areas (15.8 to 30.8%). Related to the provincial prevalence of three viral agents in Korean goats, it seemed that three viral pathogens would be directly or indirectly involving in various disorders as primary or secondary causative agents resulting in decreased productivity.

The effect of artificial oocyte activation (AOA) with a calcium ionophore on intracytoplasmic morphologically selected sperm injection (IMSI) was examined in patients with histories of repeated failed implantation attempts. Four singleton pregnancies and one twin pregnancy were obtained after embryos transfer (5/14, 35.7%). Therefore, AOA combined with IMSI can be considered an option for cycles with a fertilization defect and recurrent implantation failures.

Objective: Since IVF program was first established, various types of media and culture systems have been developed either in-house or commercially. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of in-house Maria Research Center (MRC) media to that of commercially available Sydney IVF media in human day 3 embryo transfer cycles. Methods: Three hundred sixty nine couples were included in this prospective, randomized, and comparative study. All couples undergoing IVF treatment at the Maria Fertility Hospital were randomly assigned to either Sydney IVF (n=178) or MRC (n=191) media. Results: No difference was observed between the MRC media and Sydney IVF media groups with respect to fertilization rate (74.4% vs. 75.5%). The clinical pregnancy and implantation rates of MRC media (47.1% and 20.0%, respectively) were also similar to those of Sydney IVF media (44.4% and 19.4%, respectively). However, the proportion of embryos with good quality on day 3 was significantly higher in the MRC media group than the Sydney IVF media group (50.2% vs. 43.2%) ($p$ <0.05). Conclusion: MRC media were as effective as Sydney IVF media for sustaining embryo development and pregnancy rates. The present study implies that MRC media can be a suitable alternative to commercially available media for human IVF-ET program.

분자 사슬의 무작위 절단 매카니즘으로 분해되는 고분자의 수평균(μn) 및 중량평균 중합도(μw)를 예측할 수 있는 새로운 이론식을 유도하였다. 이전의 이론식들은 고분자의 분해 과정에서 생성되는 단량체를 포함하는 저분자량 물질이 제거되지 않고 고분자 시료 내에 모두 잔존한다고 가정한 상태에서 유도되었으나, 본 이론식은 중합도가(m-1) 보다 낮은 단량체 및 올리고머가 고분자 시료로부터 모두 제거되는 것을 고려하여 유도되었다. 이전의 이론식들은 1/μn이 분해 시간에 따라 직선적으로 증가하며 분자량 분포 지수 (Q=μw/μn)가 2로 수렴한다고 예측하였으나 본 이론식에 의하면, m 값이 커짐에 따라 1/μn과 시간 사이의 관계가 직선으로부터 현저히 벗어나며 Q의 점근값이 2 보다 크게 낮아지는 것으로 예측되었다. New theoretical model equations were derived to predict the number- (μn) and weight-average degree of polymerization (μw) of polymers subjected to random chain scission degradation. Unlike previous theoretical equations, which were set up assuming that low molecular weight products, even including monomeric substances remain unremoved in the polymer residue throughout degradation, the new model considered the concomitant removal of oligomers with a degree of polymerization ≤ m-1. The previous models (corresponding to m=1) predicted that 1/μn increases linearly with increasing degradation time and that the polydispersity (Q=μw/μn) approaches asymptotically to 2. In contrast, as the value of m increases, the deviation from the linear relationship between 1/μn and time becomes increasingly significant, and the asymptotic value of Q becomes much less than 2.
