Background/Aims: Bicarbonate-containing alginate formulations are reported to be effective for controlling reflux symptoms. However, the efficacy of Lamina G alginate without gas production has not been reported. The aim is to evaluate the efficacy of a non-bicarbonate alginate in individuals with reflux symptoms without reflux esophagitis. Methods: Participants who had experienced heartburn or regurgitation for 7 consecutive days were randomized to one of the following treatment groups: proton pump inhibitors (PPI) plus alginate (combination) or PPI plus placebo (PPI only). In addition, as a reference group, patients received placebo plus alginate (alginate only). The primary endpoint compared the percentage of patients with complete resolution of symptoms for the final 7 days of the treatment. Secondary endpoints compared changes in symptom score, symptom-free days during the treatment period, the Reflux Disease Questionnaire, Patient Assessment of Upper Gastrointestinal Disorders (PAGI)-Quality of Life and PAGI-Symptoms Severity Index scores, the investigator’s assessment of symptoms, and incidence of adverse events. Results: Complete resolution of heartburn or regurgitation was not significantly different between the combination and PPI only groups (58.7% vs 57.5%, p=0.903). The secondary endpoints were not significantly different between the two groups. Complete resolution of heartburn or regurgitation, did not differ between the alginate only reference group and the PPI only group (75.0% vs 57.5%, p=0.146). Conclusions: The addition of non-bicarbonate alginate to PPI was no more effective than PPI alone in controlling reflux symptoms.

Background The Bradybaenidae snail Karaftohelix adamsi is endemic to Korea, with the species tracked from Island Ulleung in North Gyeongsang Province of South Korea. K. adamsi has been classified under the Endangered Wildlife Class II species of Korea and poses a severe risk of extinction following habitat disturbances. With no available information at the DNA (genome) or mRNA (transcriptome) level for the species, conservation by utilizing informed molecular resources seems difficult. Objective In this study, we used the Illumina short-read sequencing and Trinity de novo assembly to draft the reference transcriptome of K. adamsi. Results After assembly, 13,753 unigenes were obtained of which 10,511 were annotated to public databases (a maximum of 10,165 unigenes found homologs in PANM DB). A total of 6,351, 3,535, 358, and 3,407 unigenes were ascribed to the functional categories under KOG, GO, KEGG, and IPS, respectively. The transcripts such as the HSP 70, aquaporin, TLR, and MAPK, among others, were screened as putative functional resources for adaptation. DNA transposons were found to be thickly populated in comparison to retrotransposons in the assembled unigenes. Further, 2,164 SSRs were screened with the promiscuous presence of dinucleotide repeats such as AC/GT and AG/CT. Conclusion The transcriptome-guided discovery of molecular resources in K. adamsi will not only serve as a basis for functional genomics studies but also provide sustainable tools to be utilized for the protection of the species in the wild. Moreover, the development of polymorphic SSRs is valuable for the identification of species from newer habitats and cross-species genotyping. To evaluate the genotoxicity of CJ-11555, an anti-cirrhotic agent, the reverse mutation test, chromosomal aberration test and in vivo micronucleus test in rats were performed. In the reverse mutation test, the treatment of CJ-11555 at doses of 33.3, 100, 333, 1000, 3330 and 5000 mg/plate with and without S9 did not induce mutagenicity in Salmonella typhimurium TA98, TA100, TA1535, TA1537, and Escherichia coli ( E. coli) WP2 uvrA. In chromosomal aberration test, CJ-11555 did not induce structural a chromosomal aberration in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with and without metabolic activation at all doses. In micronucleus test, CJ-11555 did not induce any statistically significant increases in micronucleated polychromatic erythrocyte (MNPCE) at doses of 500, 1000, and<br/> 2000 mg/kg. These results suggest that CJ-11555 might not have a mutagenic potential under the conditions in this study.

Trivalent ions (Ga, Al, In) doped ZnO films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on non-alkali glass substrate at substrate temperature of 300℃. We used the different three types of high density (95%~) ceramic sintered disks (doped with Ga₂O₃; 6.65 wt%, Al₂O₃; 3.0 wt%, In₂O₃; 9.54 wt%). This study examined the effect of different dopants (Ga, Al, In) on the electrical, structural, and optical properties of the films. The lowest resistivity of 5.14×10?⁴ Ω㎝ and the highest optical band gap of 3.74 eV were obtained by Ga doped ZnO (GZO) film. All the films had a preferred orientation along the (002) direction, indicating that the growth orientation has a c-axis perpendicular to the substrate surface. The average transmittance of the films was more than 85% in the visible range.
