        Electric field induced variation of temperature and entropy in dielectric elastomers

        Dielectric elastomer is a kind of typical electro-active polymer material. Under external electric field it can produce large electrostrictiondeformation and possesses the advantages of high elastic energy density, super short response time, high efficiency, and so on. It iswidely used in the artificial muscles, facial expressions, actuators, energy harvesters, sensors, robots and Braille display devices, and alsoshows huge application potential in the aerospace and intelligent bionic areas. We built the free energy of the dielectric elastomer electrical-mechanical coupling system and investigated its constitutive relation and stability behavior. Then we calculated the elastomer’s criticaldeformation suffering from the voltage. If electrical breakdown, electromechanical instability and snap-through instability can beavoided, the large electrostriction deformation can induce adiabatic temperature change and isothermal entropy change of the dielectricelastomer. We used the entropy-temperature or electric displacement-electric field plane to describe the temperature change and entropychange of dielectric elastomer undergoing large electrostriction deformation. With the influence of temperature, we developed a temperatureand deformation coupling thermodynamical free energy model to calculate the electric field induced variation of temperature andentropy in dielectric elastomers. The results should offer great help in guiding the design and fabrication of excellent actuators featuringsoft dielectric elastomers.

        Genomic, evolutionary and expression profile analysis of Hsp70 superfamily in A and D genome of cotton (Gossypium spp.) under the challenge of Verticillium dahliae

        In this study, we comparatively analyzed the 115 Hsp70 genes identified in Gossypium raimondii, Gossypium hirsutum and Gossypium arboreum genomes. Those Hsp70 genes unequally distributed among chromosomes in A and D genome of cotton (Gossypium spp.), and were classified into 29 groups according to the homology of them. Based on the localization information of the orthologs in Arabidopsis, the Hsp70 proteins were predicted to locate in cytosol, endoplasmic reticulum, mitochondrion or chloroplast. Homologous analysis indicated the evolutionary conservation of Hsp70 in cotton. In addition, those Hsp70 genes were differently expressed in Suyuan-045, Hai-7124 and TM-1, which were highly resistant, resistant, and sensitive to Verticillium dahliae respectively. The expressions of 26 Hsp70 genes were induced by Verticillium dahliae except for Hsp70-07/16/25/26, and the result suggested the potential involvement of them in responding to Verticillium wilt. Hsp70-08/30/31 was highly expressed in both Suyuan-045 and Hai-7124, and it was hypothesized that they might be involved in the resistance to the invasion of Verticillium dahliae. 144h after inoculation with Verticillium dahliae, the expression of Hsp70-13/14/15 was only up-regulated in Suyuan-045, and it was assumed that they might be involved in resistance to the extension of Verticillium dahliae. Further study on those Hsp70 genes would be valuable to reveal the role of them in Verticillium wilt resistance.

        Formulation of nimodipine nanocrystals for oral administration

        The aim of this paper is to optimize nimodipine (NMD) nanocrystals (NCs) for oral administration. The effects of independent process variables (microprecipitation temperature, shearing speed, shearing time, homogenization pressure and number of cycles) on the particle size have been studied. Experiments were conducted to optimize the formulation composition. A single factor exploration was used to screen the primary stabilizers. Then, the selected polymers/surfactants were further optimized using an L9 (34) orthogonal design. The optimal formulation was composed of NMD (0.7 %, w/v), F127 (0.4 %, w/v), HPMC-E5 (0.1 %, w/v), and sodium deoxycholate (0.05 %, w/v) and was rod-shaped as shown by SEM observations, and it had a particle size of 833.3 ± 20.6 nm, determined by laser diffraction. These aqueous NCs were physically stable for 15 days. To further improve the stability, the NCs were freeze-dried. The powder obtained exhibited acceptable flowability and was physically stable for at least 24 months. Additionally, the NMD NCs displayed much higher dissolution profiles than the bulk drug. The pharmacokinetic results showed that the relative bioavailability was 397 % in comparison with Nimotop, suggesting that NCs are an efficient strategy for improving the oral bioavailability of poorly water-soluble drugs.

        A New Activation Function with LSA for LNNA Based Hand Gesture Detection and its Application in Human-MAV Interaction

        This paper presents a lightweight convolutional neural network architecture based hand gesture recognition for micro aerial vehicle (MAV) applications, which is able to detect hand gestures accurately and quickly convert into commands to control the MAV’s fl ight. In order to improve detection accuracy, a new activation function, named as adjustable-arctangent linear units (ALU) is proposed combined with linear stretching anchors (LSA) for accurate hand gesture detection. To achieve high detection speed, a lightweight neural network architecture (LNNA) is proposed and well trained. A large number of experiments show that by using LSA and ALU, the proposed solution can achieve the highest detection accuracy performance compared with commonly used methods. Moreover, compared with currently used YOLOv3, LNNA can improve the detecting speed by about 48.9% on 2080Ti GPU, and increase the speed to 11.67 frames per second on NVIDIA Jetson TX2. Flight experiments on MAVs also proved the eff ectiveness of the proposed hand gesture detection method.

        Olaparib induced senescence under P16 or P53 dependent manner in ovarian cancer

        Objective: Poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) is an important molecule in the early stress response of DNA damage, which is involved in DNA damage repair and cellular senescence. Olaparib, as PARP inhibitor, has an anti-tumor effect on high grade serous ovarian cancer, but its effects on cellular senescence have not been reported. This study intends to explore the role of olaparib in the regulation of senescence in ovarian cancer cells. Methods: The effects of olaparib on the senescence of ovarian cancer cells were detected by using the senescence-associated β-galactosidase (SA-β-Gal) and senescence-associated heterochromatin aggregation (SAHF). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction was used to analyze the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Cell cycle and apoptosis were detected by flow cytometry. The effect of olaparib on tumor growth was analyzed in a nude mouse xenograft transplantation model. Results: Long-term (6 days) treatment with olaparib (5 μM) significantly inhibited the growth of ovarian cancer cells, leading to arrest the cell cycle at G0/G1 phase, significant increase the number of positive SA-β-Gal stained cells and positive SAHF cells. The expression of P16 and retinoblastoma protein (p-RB) were significantly enhanced in SKOV3 cells under olaparib treated, meanwhile, the expression of P53 and p-RB were upregulated in A2780 cells. In OVCAR-3 cells, the expression of P53 was downregulated and p-RB was upregulated. Mice with SKOV3 xenograft transplantation was given olaparib (10 mg/kg/day) via abdominal cavity administration, the tumor volume was reduced (p<0.01). Conclusion: Continuous low dosage administration of olaparib induced senescence under P16 or P53 dependent manner in ovarian cancer.

        The Impact of Double Fixation with Titanium Tack and N-Butyl Cyanoacrylate Glue (NBCG) Mesh Fixation versus NBCG Fixation Only in Totally Extra-Peritoneal Hernioplasty with 3-Dimensional Configured Polyester Mesh: A Comparative Study

        Purpose: Our aim is to compare 3-dimensional mesh fixation using titanium tacks combine with n-butyl cyanoacrylate glue (NBCG) (COMBINE group) versus NBCG only (NBCG group) in totally extraperitoneal inguinal hernioplasty (TEP).Methods: This is a retrospectively study of patients diagnosed with unilateral inguinal hernia and underwent TEP with 3-dimensional configured polyester mesh fixation using titanium tacks combine NBCG or NBCG only at the University of Hong Kong-Shenzhen Hospital with data prospectively collected. Operative details and outcomes were compared including: operating time, size of defect, total hospital cost, post-operative pain scores and recurrence.Results: From 08.2013 to 03.2016 a total of 219 patients were included. There was no significant difference between COMBINE group and NBCG group in mean age (52.5 years versus 48.2 years), mean size of defects (2.4 cm versus 2.6 cm), and operating time (121 mins versus 111 mins). There were significant differences between COMBINE group and NBCG group in total hospital cost (3035 USD versus 2022 USD), post-operative pain score on day 2 to day 4 (VAS: 1.4 versus 1.0, 1.0 versus 0.4, 0.5 versus 0.2). There was one recurrence in COMBINE group (p=0.276) with overall recurrence of 0.46%.Conclusion: Patients with inguinal hernia underwent TEP with 3-dimensional configured polyester mesh with NBCG fixation only having comparative surgical outcome to COMBINE group. A recurrence of 0.46% can be achieved with this combination. Tacks fixation may cause more post-operative pain and increase hospital cost. Use of N-butyl cyanoacrylate glue in TEP is safe and effective in our clinical series.

      • Parameter Design Scheme for the embedded Multiport Flexible ac Interconnector

        The softly open point (SOP) is a burgeoning technology to deal with the potential voltage violation and feeder congestion issues yielded by the increasing integration of distributed generations (DGs) and various novel loads. Compared with the traditional solution with the back-to-back modular multilevel converters (BTB-MMC), a novel embedded multiport flexible ac interconnector (eM-FACI) is proposed to serve as the SOP for the feeders’ power regulation with light weight, small volume, and low cost. Flexible multi-feeder interconnection can be achieved by using half-bridge submodules instead of full-power MMC stations. However, due to the feeder integration, the eM-FACI’s unique configuration makes the parameter design more complicated than the conventional BTB-MMC. This paper proposes a parameter design scheme for the eM-FACI’s according to the extreme fluctuate power interaction condition. And the extreme case is designed by the current decoupling and the power decoupling between different feeders. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by MATLAB/Simulink.

        A new thermosensitive polymer as nonadhesive liquidembolism material

        Thermosensitive copolymers poly(NIPAm-co-NNPAm) ofN-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) withN-n-propylacrylamide(NNPAm) were synthesized by free radical copolymerization using potassium persulfate (KPS) and sodium sulte (Na2SO3) as ini-tiator. FTIR and1H NMR conrmed the structure of the copolymer poly(NIPAm-co-NNPAm). The dynamic mechanical analysisand dynamic contact angle were determined. The lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of copolymers was investigated byDSC. The results indicated the LCST decreased with the higher NNPAm contents. The phase transition of the copolymer solutionoccurred at body temperature within 30 s and the copolymers changed into soft solids. The copolymer could be used as a new non-adhesive liquid embolism material for the intervenient therapy of the cerebral arterio-venous malformation (AVM)..
