Biomass, a carbon neutral fuel, is one of the fastest growing renewable energy sources. In this study, economic feasibility of small scale power generation system using syngas from biomass has been investigated. Effects of important variables such as capital investment, cost of waste wood, renewable energy certificate(REC), system marginal price(SMP) on the benefit of business have been analyzed. Internal rate of return(IRR) was predicted as 16.90%, which implicates the business is promising based on the assumptions such as SMP of 137 Won/kWh, capital cost of 4.7 billion won, and waste wood price of 30 thousand won. Major factors affecting the benefit of business are as follows; system marginal price, operational rate, capital investment, expenditure of waste wood, certified emission reduction.

Objective : To report the method and efficacy of the site specific-defects repair in the endopelvic fascia and uterosacral ligament suspension for the correction of posthysterectomy vaginal vault prolapse. Methods : This study was performed in 3 patients with posthyterectomy vaginal vault prolapse who underwent the surgery for the reconstruction of endopelvic fascia and the correction of vault prolapsed vagina by using uterosacral ligament suspension at the department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Moon-Hwa Hospital. Among them, 1 patient was treated by laparotomy, and 2 patients were treated by laparoscope. Results : The age of patients ranged from 49 to 67 years. The mean operation time was 111 minutes (105-120 minutes). The status of postoperative vagina was normal in all 3 patients, who were discharged 9 days after operation without symptoms. No complication or recurrence were found in them despite long-term follow-up for 24 months, 12 months, 7 months, respectively after operation. One patient has been treated with HRT therapy. Conclusion : The reconstruction of the defect of endopelvic fascia and uterosacral ligament fixation may be very safe, effective, and functional in the correction of vaginal vault prolapse. This study reports the treatment of vaginal vault prolapse using uterosacral ligament within Korea for the first time.

Spent nuclear fuel repository has almost reached its maximum capacity in Korea. Recently, the issue of safe management and conflict resolution in decision-making process for spent nuclear fuel repository drew attention. The purpose of this research is to examine factors determining local acceptance of spent nuclear fuel repository and to investigate moderating effect among different groups of people. The survey was conducted to analyze the residents’ perception of spent nuclear fuel repository, and five factors were used to measure the local acceptance utilizing structural equation model. As a result, environmental impact and economic feasibility had a high positive relation to local acceptance rather than risk perception. In particular, the effects of environmental impact were distinctively high regardless of demographic characteristics. The degree of economic feasibility in male and household income less than 3 million won groups showed high effects on local acceptance, and risk perception had high effects on female and household income more than 3 million won. The research is significant to seek various factors that residents are concerned about and supports for policy-making.
Effective algorithms of a power converter for tidal current power generation system

This study investigates design procedures and experimental results of power converters for the tidal current power generation system installed at Jin-Do in Korea. The designed power converters consist of a grid-connected converter and a power converter to control the permanent magnet synchronous generator. Many theoretical control algorithms are required to design the power converter for a tidal current power generation system. In this study, the effective algorithm of power converters for a tidal current generation on the phase lock loop algorithm of the grid-connected converter and maximum power point tracking algorithm of generator-side converter was investigated. For the feasibility study of the commercial tidal current power generation system, the down-scaled 20-kW tidal generation system has been installed and empirically evaluated.

This study was conducted to identify transition characteristics of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) and to calculate bio-concentration factors (BCF) in the three perennial root medicinal plants, namely Codonopsis lanceolata (Deoduck), Platycodon grandiflorum (Balloon flower) and Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng) grown in major medicinal plant producing districts in Korea. Average BCF values ranged from 0.009~0.029 in As, 0.334~1.453 in Cd, and 0.021~0.023 in Pb in three perennial root medicinal plants. The BCF values increased in the order of ginseng (0.029) > deodeok (0.012) > balloon flower (0.009) for As, balloon flower (1.453) > deodeok (0.685) > ginseng (0.334) for Cd, and ginseng (0.023) > deodeok (0.022) > balloon flower (0.021) for Pb. The BCF values calculated in this study will be useful for predicting the uptake of heavy metal (loid)s. Further study on uptake and accumulation mechanism of toxic metal (loid)s by agricultural products is required to assess the human health risk associated with soil contamination.

Objective This study aimed to estimate the association between total and ionized magnesium, and the changes in serum magnesium and calcium levels in patients with preterm labor during magnesium sulfate (MgSO<sub>4</sub>) administration. Methods The study population included 64 women who were candidates for intravenous MgSO<sub>4</sub> treatment for preterm labor. Serial blood samples were taken and measured total magnesium (T-Mg), ionized magnesium (I-Mg), total calcium (T-Ca), and ionized calcium (I-Ca) levels every one-week interval (1st, 2nd, 3rd). Results There was no significant difference in T-Mg and I-Mg levels during MgSO<sub>4</sub> administration (P>0.05). There was no significant difference in T-Ca and I-Ca levels during MgSO<sub>4</sub> administration (P>0.05). Compared before and after administration of MgSO<sub>4</sub>, T-Mg and I-Mg levels and T-Ca levels were changed allow statistically significant (P<0.05). But, there was no significant difference in the I-Ca serum levels before and after MgSO<sub>4</sub> administration (P=0.495). The I-Mg levels for patients with adverse effect were higher than other group but did not reach statistical significance (P>0.05). There was significant correlation between levels of I-Mg and T-Mg (I-Mg=0.395×T-Mg+0.144, P<0.01). Conclusion There were no significant differences in serum Mg and Ca levels during MgSO<sub>4</sub> administration for preterm labor. Compared to the before and after administration of MgSO<sub>4</sub>, only I-Ca levels were not substantially changed. There are significant correlations between I-Mg and T-Mg levels during administration of MgSO<sub>4</sub> and I-Mg level seemed to have more correlation with adverse effect than T-Mg.
Initial oxidation behavior of Fe-Cr-Si alloys in 1200 °C steam

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Accident-tolerant fuel (ATF) cladding with high oxidation resistance during severe accidents is of critical importance to light water reactor safety and sustainability. One newly proposed ATF cladding concept, a multi-metallic layered composite (MMLC), hinges upon the oxidation resistance of an outer Fe-Cr-Si layer on top of a Zr-based alloy, separated by barrier layers to avoid Fe-Zr eutectic formation. The initial oxidation resistance of three potential Fe-Cr-Si alloys was evaluated by exposing them to 1200 °C oxidizing steam for up to one hundred seconds, along with a Zr–Nb–Sn alloy as a reference. The oxidation resistance of Fe12Cr2Si and Fe16Cr2Si was poor, exhibiting a porous, incomplete multilayer oxide composed mainly of mixed Fe/Cr/Si spinels. However, Fe20Cr2Si showed excellent oxidation resistance due to a continuous amorphous SiO<SUB>2</SUB> layer formed at the metal–oxide interface, followed by almost fully dense Cr<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB>. This motivates the consideration of Fe-Cr-Si alloys as an additional ATF design choice, similar to FeCrAl alloys in performance and oxidation resistance mechanism.</P>
Acute Gastritis and Splenic Infarction Caused by Epstein-Barr Virus

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection can be presented with various clinical manifestations and different levels of severity when infected. Infectious mononucleosis, which is most commonly caused by EBV infection in children and adoles-cents, is a clinical syndrome characterized by fatigue, malaise, fever, sore throat, and generalized lymphadenopathy. But rarely, patients with infectious mononucleosis may present with gastrointestinal symptoms and complicated by gastritis, splenic infarction, and splenic rupture. We encountered a 16-year-old girl who presented with fever, fatigue, and epigastric pain. Splenic infarction and EBV-associated gastritis were diagnosed by using esophagogas-troduodenoscopy and abdominal computed tomography. Endoscopy revealed a generalized hyperemic nodular lesion in the stomach, and the biopsy findings were chronic gastritis with erosion and positive in situ hybridization for EBV. As splenic infarction and acute gastritis are rare in infectious mononucleosis and are prone to be overlooked, we must consider these complications when an infectious mononucleosis patient presents with gastrointestinal symptom.
