Recently, there has been increasing interest in reduction of energy consumption worldwide, which is the same in the field of manufacturing engineering. However, a standard power consumption of machining processes have yet to be addressed. So, the power consumption of machining processes needs to be evaluated and documented properly. In this research, we found that the machining power consumption is proportional to Material Removal Rate (MRR), that depends cutting parameters such as cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut. And the machining power consumption could be simplified with the 1st order polynomial model via MRR. But the slope of this polynomial may vary among properties of a specimen on the same machine. To be standardized, a specimen was annealed by heat treatment and a material of a specimen was selected. Heat treatment effects of specimens from different manufacturers were eliminated by ISO-annealing. The machining power consumption might not be affected by differences of equivalent metal, SM45C and AISI 1045. Finally, the machining power consumption via MRR was modeled, and predicted by cutting parameters of NC codes.

Measurement of energy consumption is the basic activity in energy-saving researches. Moreover, monitoring of power consumption also could be applicable to condition monitoring of machine tools. Many researches have been extensively performed in this area. In this research, material removal energy was measured using total energy consumption of machine tool, and was analyzed in terms of various process parameters and tool wear. Material removal energy increased linearly as flank wear increased. Since increase of material removal energy varies differently in accordance with process parameters, more detail energy model needs to be constructed.
