Diamond is a promising material for next-generation power electronic devices used in high voltage and high temperature, but intrinsic defects introduced during the growth cause the degradation of electrical properties. There is a need to improve the crystal defect analysis method of analyzing large areas as non-destructive. Herein, the inclination of threading dislocations in an on-axis single-crystal free-standing diamond grown by microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPCVD) was analyzed using synchrotron white beam X-ray topography (SWBXRT). The majority of dislocations in CVD-grown diamond were known as [001] threading dislocation; however, SWBXRT indicated that the dislocations were not exact [001], but inclined from [001] direction. Dislocation inclination vector was calculated by g = <444> diffraction images, which determined direction and angle from [001] direction. The exact [001] dislocation accounted for 20% of investigated dislocations, and the remaining dislocations inclined randomly from the [001] direction with 7°–12°. The threading dislocations in the off-axis sample inclined in a particular direction due to step-flow dominant growth. The sample analyzed in this paper has no dependence on a particular direction due to localized step-flow caused by on-axis growth. Threading dislocations in an on-axis diamond inclined with a similar degree of well-controlled off-axis sample.

A 48-year-old man presented with acute right flank pain. A computed tomography scan revealed right renal infarction. Because he had no thrombosis in the renal vessels and no clear embolic source, a further examination was performed to find the cause of the renal infarction. On transesophageal echocardiography, a right- to-left shunt during the Valsalva maneuver established a diagnosis of patent foramen ovale. This is a case of paradoxical embolism through a PFO leading to renal infarction.

In plants, the Dof (DNA binding with One Finger) proteins are plant-specific transcription factors with a particular class of zinc-finger DNA-binding domain. The Dof genes have been predicted 30 different Dof genes in the rice Oryza sativa genome by phylogenetic analysis. The mostly Dof proteins contain a conserved region of 50 amino acids with a C2-C2 zinc finger motifs that binds a cis-regulatory element sequence 5’-T/AAAAG-3’. We found that a member of the DOF transcription factor family, Dof1 gene of rice, was expressed to wound from Ds insertion mutant population. Sequencing of the flanking regions of the transposon insertion site indicated that the gene-trap had been inserted near the front of the second exon of OsDof1 gene in chromosome 7. Genomic southern analysis revealed that mutant line contained a single copy of Ds gene trap. The Ds tagged rice mutant line, OsDof1::Ds, wound-inducible GUS expression was identified. To analyze the cis-acting elements, we constructed fusion genes with the OsDof1 promoter fused to the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene and transformed Arabidopsis and rice plants with these constructs. Wound-induced GUS expression was observed in the leaves of transgenic OsDof1::GUS rice and Arabidospsis plants. These results showed that, OsDof1 protein might be involved in stress responses and growth regulation in plant, might plays a role as a transcription regulator in stress response signal transduction pathways of plant.

Aims: The developing brain of a neonate is particularly susceptible to damage by vitamin C deficiency because of its rapid growth and immature antioxidant system. Cognitive impairment and sensory motor deficits are found in the adult brain upon vitamin C deficiency. Therefore, the aim of this study was to clarify the role of vitamin C in its own right and its related mechanisms in Gulo(-/-) mice incapable of synthesizing vitamin C. Results: When vitamin C supplementation was ceased for 2 weeks until delivery, stillbirths and a significant reduction in neonatal mice were observed and the growth of neonates was remarkably decreased. In addition, intraparenchymal hemorrhages were found in most of the brains, especially in the stillborn neonates. In addition, the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and 8-isoprostanes were increased and structural abnormalities were found in the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Especially, vitamin C deficiency caused the failure of or a delay in the formation of cerebellar fissures accompanied by abnormal foliation and altered Purkinje cell alignment. In the developed adult brains from vitamin C-deficient Gulo(-/-) mice, the levels of glutathione, MDA, nitrate, IL-6, TNF-, and Bax were increased and the expression of the GABRA6 and calbindin-28k was decreased. Due to atrophy of the granule and Purkinje cells, the motor behavior of vitamin C-deficient Gulo(-/-) mice declined. Innovation and Conclusion: Vitamin C deficiency during gestation induces intraparenchymal hemorrhages and severe defects in the development of the cerebellum. In fully developed brains, it induces the functional impairment by altering the cellular composition in the cerebellum. Antioxid. Redox Signal. 23, 1270-1283.

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have unique transcriptional regulatory networks and epigenetic states that are involved in maintaining pluripotency. In this study, the transcriptional levels and histone modifications of lineage-specific genes were compared for human ESC (hESC) lines and human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) lines. Expression of the pluripotency marker genes, OCT4, SOX2, and NANOG, was largely modulated in hESCs by permissive histone marks, whereas hiPSC lines showed differential histone modifications in the gene promoters. The permissive histone mark, H3K4me3, predominantly contributed to expression of the oncogene, c-MYC, in hESC lines, whereas histone modifications of the c-MYC promoter varied between hiPSC lines. Interestingly, the transcriptional levels and epigenetic marks in the promoters of the developmental genes such as SOX17, T, and NESTIN varied among individual hiPSC lines. In particular, a partially-reprogrammed hiPSC cell line showed lower frequencies of permissive and repressive histone marks in the promoters of most genes, indicating incomplete epigenetic reprogramming. Our data indicate that respective hPSCs have distinct epigenetic signatures of lineage-specific genes, thereby leading to in their propensities to follow a particular differentiation pathway.

Pharmacy utilization among immigrants in Korea is increasing amid the rapidly rising number of immigrants living in the country. However, few studies have investigated immigrants’ pharmacy utilization. This qualitative study used group interviews to explore immigrants’ experiences and perceptions of drug use and pharmacist services in Korea. The study participants consisted of 30 immigrants who had lived in Incheon and Gyeonggi for at least one year and had used pharmacies. The analysis results are grouped under three themes: “Reasons for visiting and selecting a pharmacy,” “Experience and perception of pharmacy and pharmacists’ services,” and “Experience and perception of taking medicine.” Our study shows that immigrants in Korea face language barriers when visiting pharmacies and struggle with Korea’s prescription-dispensing systems, forcing them to rely on their home country communities. However, immigrants who build a relationship of trust with a certain pharmacy tend to visit it regularly. Therefore, Korean pharmacists must strive to build good relationships with immigrants in order to help them adapt to Korea’s healthcare system.
