• Comparing Energy Efficiency of MPI and MapReduce on ARM based Cluster

        Jahanzeb Maqbool(자한제프 마크불),Permata Nur Rizki(페르마타 눌 리즈키),Sangyoon Oh(오상윤) 한국컴퓨터정보학회 2014 한국컴퓨터정보학회 학술발표논문집 Vol.22 No.1

The performance of large scale software applications has been automatically increasing for last few decades under the influence of Moore’s law – the number of transistors on a microprocessor roughly doubled every eighteen months. However, on-chip transistors limitations and heating issues led to the emergence of multicore processors. The energy efficient ARM based System-on-Chip (SoC) processors are being considered for future high performance computing systems. In this paper, we present a case study of two widely used parallel programming models i.e. MPI and MapReduce on distributed memory cluster of ARM SoC development boards. The case study application, Black-Scholes option pricing equation, was parallelized and evaluated in terms of power consumption and throughput. The results show that the Hadoop implementation has low instantaneous power consumption that of MPI, but MPI outperforms Hadoop implementation by a factor of 1.46 in terms of total power consumption to execution time ratio.

Effect of microstructure on the hardness heterogeneity of dissimilar metal joints between 316L stainless steel and SS400 steel

        Jahanzeb, Nabeel,Shin, Ji-Hwan,Singh, Jaiveer,Heo, Yoon-Uk,Choi, Shi-Hoon Elsevier Sequoia 2017 Materials science & engineering Structural materia Vol.700 No.-

Abstract

The dissimilar weld joints between 316L austenitic stainless steel and SS400 ferritic steel were used to investigate the effect that microstructure exerts on hardness heterogeneity in weld joints. In order to identify the constituent phases and deformation mechanisms in the dissimilar weld joints, microstructure characterization of undeformed and deformed specimens was conducted via optical microscope (OM), electron back-scattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques. Micro-hardness measurements across the different weld regions and mini-tension testing combined with digital image correlation (DIC) were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of the base metals (BMs), the weld zone (WZ), and the heat-affected zone (HAZ). Local strain heterogeneity on deformed specimens was also explained by microstructure heterogeneity in terms of grain morphology and constituent phases. Non-uniform enhancements of the strain distributions were distinct in the WZ, which consisted of a dendritic structure with a irregular morphologies. Uneven patterns of a martensite transformation from γ to α′ in the 316L contributed to localized heterogeneity in the strain distribution.

Image Based 3D Reconstruction of Texture-less Objects for VR Contents

        Jahanzeb Hafeez,Seunghyun Lee,Soonchul Kwon,Alaric Hamacher 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2017 Journal of Advanced Smart Convergence Vol.6 No.1

Recent development in virtual and augmented reality increases the demand for content in many different fields. One of the fast ways to create content for VR is 3D modeling of real objects. In this paper we propose a system to reconstruct three-dimensional models of real objects from the set of two-dimensional images under the assumption that the subject does not has distinct features. We explicitly consider an object that is made of one or more surfaces and radiant constant energy isotropically. We design a low cost portable multi camera rig system that is capable of capturing images simultaneously from all cameras. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, comparison is made between 3D model and a CAD model. A simple algorithm is also proposed to acquire original texture or color of the subject. Using best pattern found after the experiments, 3D model of the Pyeongchang Olympic Mascot “Soohorang” is created to use as VR content

Slicing Radio Access Network (RAN) can help in effectively utilizing the network bandwidth and to better manage the increasing traffic over interent. RAN slicing system discussed in this paper is based on an open-source slicing mechanism in which we write a JSON configuration file for slicing policy and send it to the FlexRAN controller. FlexRAN controlls the core networks (CNs) through OAI-RAN on the evolved packet core (EPC) component of this system. Each CN is responsible for handling a saperate RAN slice. The type of internet traffic is identified by the FlexRAN crontroller and is sent to the respective CN through OAI-RAN. CN handles the traffic according to the allocated bandwidth and in this way the internet traffic is sliced inside the EPC component.

A Study on the Quality of Photometric Scanning Under Variable Illumination Conditions

        전형준,Jahanzeb Hafeez,Hamacher Alaric Carl,이승현,권순철 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2017 Journal of Advanced Smart Convergence Vol.6 No.4

The conventional scan methods are based on a laser scanner and a depth camera, which requires high cost and complicated post-processing. Whereas in photometric scanning method, the 3D modeling data is acquired through multi-view images. This is advantageous compared to the other methods. The quality of a photometric 3D model depends on the environmental conditions or the object characteristics, but the quality is lower as compared to other methods. Therefore, various methods for improving the quality of photometric scanning are being studied. In this paper, we aim to investigate the effect of illumination conditions on the quality of photometric scanning data. To do this, 'Moai' statue is 3D printed with a size of 600 (H) × 1,000 (V) × 600 (D). The printed object is photographed under the hard light and soft light environments. We obtained the modeling data by photometric scanning method and compared it with the ground truth of 'Moai'. The 'Point-to-Point' method used to analyseanalyze the modeling data using open source tool 'CloudCompare'. As a result of comparison, it is confirmed that the standard deviation value of the 3D model generated under the soft light is 0.090686 and the standard deviation value of the 3D model generated under the hard light is 0.039954. This proves that the higher quality 3D modeling data can be obtained in a hard light environment. The results of this paper are expected to be applied for the acquisition of high-quality data.

Reassessment of Volatility Transmission Among South Asian Equity Markets

        Tariq AZIZ,Jahanzeb MARWAT,Sheraz MUSTAFA,Vikesh KUMAR,Lara AL-HADDAD 한국유통과학회 2021 The Journal of Asian Finance, Economics and Busine Vol.8 No.1

This study investigates the nexus among the South Asian economies. Effects of shocks in the equity market of one country on the equity market of the other country are examined. For empirical analysis, the time series monthly data is used for the period from February 2013 to August 2019. The study focuses on the four larger economies of the region, namely, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka. To investigate for asymmetric effects of positive and negative shocks, EGARCH model is used. The findings show the mix nature of the spillovers between the various pairs of countries. The equity market of Pakistan has two-way spillover effects with the equity market of Bangladesh, but has no association with the equity markets of India and Sri Lanka. The volatility in the equity market of India significantly influences the volatility of the financial markets of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Similarly, the capital market of Sri Lanka has a negative association with the equity market of India as well as Bangladesh, but does not affect the equity market of any other country. These findings validate the argument in the literature that geographic location influences the nexus among equity markets. The findings are important for policy-makers and investors

Vol.55 No.2

The deformation and failure behaviors of dissimilar metal joints between SS400 steel and STS316L steel were investigated. The dissimilar metal joints were fabricated using the tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding process with STS309 steel as a filler metal. The microstructures of the dissimilar metal joints were investigated using an optical microscope and EBSD technique. The mechanical properties of the base metal (BM), heat affected zone (HAZ) and weld metal (WM) were measured using a micro-hardness and micro-tension tester combined with the digital image correlation (DIC) technique. The HAZ of the STS316L steel exhibited the highest micro-hardness value, and yield/tensile strengths, while the BM of the SS440 steel exhibited the lowest micro-hardness value and yield /tensile strengths. The grain size refinement in the HAZ of SS400 steel induced an enhancement of micro-hardness value and yield/tensile strengths compared to the BM of the SS400 steel. The WM, which consists of primary δ-ferrite and a matrix of austenite phase, exhibited relatively a high micro-hardness value, yield /tensile strengths and elongation compared to the BM and HAZ of the SS400 steel.

A Study on Optimized Mapping Environment for Real-time Spatial Mapping of HoloLens

        Leehwan Hwang,Jaehyun Lee,Jahanzeb Hafeez,Jinwook Kang,Seunghyun Lee,Soonchul Kwon 한국인터넷방송통신학회 2017 International Journal of Internet, Broadcasting an Vol.9 No.3

Recently, the development of the head mounted display (HMD) device has attracted a great deal of attention to the actual contents. Especially, Augmented Reality (AR), which is a mixture of actual information and virtual world information, is focused on. AR HMD is able to interact by arranging virtual objects in real space through spatial recognition using depth camera. In order to naturally mix virtual space with real space, it is necessary to develop a technology for realizing spatial mapping information with high accuracy. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the optimal configuration of augmented reality application program by realizing accurate spatial mapping information when mapping a real space and an object placement environment using HoloLens. To do this, we changed the spatial mapping information in real space to three levels, which are the number of meshes used in cubic meters to scan step by step. After that, it was compared with the 3D model obtained by changing the actual space and mesh number. Experimental result shows that the higher the number of meshes used in cubic meters, the higher the accuracy between real space and spatial mapping. This paper is expected to be applied to augmented reality application programs that require scanning of highly mapped spatial mapping information.
