Structural performance of timber frame joints - Full scale tests and numerical validation

        S.A. Aejaz,A.R. Dar,J.A. Bhat 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.74 No.4

The force resisting ability of a connection has direct implications on the overall response of a timber framed structure to various actions, thereby governing the integrity and safety of such constructions. The behavior of timber framed structures has been studied by many researchers by testing full-scale-connections in timber frames so as to establish consistent design provisions on the same. However, much emphasis in this approach has been unidirectional, that has focused on a particular connection configuration, with no research output stressing on the refinement of the existing connection details in order to optimize their performance. In this regard, addition of adhesive to dowelled timber connections is an economically effective technique that has a potential to improve their performance. Therefore, a comparative study to evaluate the performance of various full-scale timber frame Nailed connections (Bridled Tenon, Cross Halved, Dovetail Halved and Mortise Tenon) supplemented by adhesive with respect to Nailed-Only counterparts under tensile loading has been investigated in this paper. The load-deformation values measured have been used to calculate stiffness, load capacity and ductility in both the connection forms (with and without adhesion) which in turn have been compared to other configurations along with the observed failure modes. The observed load capacity of the tested models has also been compared to the design strengths predicted by National Design Specifications (NDS-2018) for timber construction. Additionally, the experimental behavior was validated by developing non-linear finite element models in ABAQUS. All the results showed incorporation of adhesive to be an efficient and an economical technique in significantly enhancing the performance of various timber nailed connections under tensile action. Thus, this research is novel in a sense that it not only explores the tensile behavior of different nailed joint configurations common in timber construction but also stresses on improvising the same in a logical manner hence making it distinctive in its approach.

      • Depot-specific gene expression profiles during differentiation and transdifferentiation of bovine muscle satellite cells, and differentiation of preadipocytes

        Lee, E.J.,Lee, H.J.,Kamli, M.R.,Pokharel, S.,Bhat, A.R.,Lee, Y.H.,Choi, B.H.,Chun, T.,Kang, S.W.,Lee, Y.S.,Kim, J.W.,Schnabel, R.D.,Taylor, J.F.,Choi, I. Academic Press 2012 Genomics Vol.100 No.3

We report a systematic study of gene expression during myogenesis and transdifferentiation in four bovine muscle tissues and of adipogenesis in three bovine fat tissues using DNA microarray analysis. One hundred hybridizations were performed and 7245 genes of known and unknown function were identified as being differentially expressed. Supervised hierarchical cluster analysis of gene expression patterns revealed the tissue specificity of genes. A close relationship in global gene expression observed for adipocyte-like cells derived from muscle and adipocytes derived from intramuscular fat suggests a common origin for these cells. The role of transthyretin in myogenesis is a novel finding. Different genes were highly induced during the transdifferentiation of myogenic satellite cells and in the adipogenesis of preadipocytes, indicating the involvement of different molecular mechanisms in these processes. Induction of CD36 and FABP4 expression in adipocyte-like cells and adipocytes may share a common pathway.

아욱목 (目) 식물의 모용에 (毛茸) 의한 분류학적 소견

        J . A . Inamdar,R . Balakrishna Bhat,T . V . Ramana Rao 한국식물학회 1983 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.26 No.3

Structure, ontogeny, classification and taxonomic significance of trichomes have been studied in 39 genera and 125 species of the selected families in Malvales. They were studied on both vegetative and floral organs. There are nine types of eglandular and eight of glandular trichomes. The trichomes were classified on the basis of their form, structure and contents. All of them originated from a single papillate hair initial. According to the trichome data, the Malvales was confirmed as a natural order with 5 homogenous families: Malvaceae, Bombacaceae, Sterculiaceae, Tiliaceae, and Elaeocarpaceae.

      • The ultrafast nonlinear optical response and multi-photon absorption of a new metal complex in the near-infrared spectral range

        Kiran, A J,Lee, H W,Sampath Kumar, H C,Rudresha, B J,Bhat, B R,Yeom, D-I,Kim, K,Rotermund, F IOP Publishing 2010 Journal of optics Vol.12 No.3

<P>A new coordination compound, chloro(1,10-phenanthroline-<I>N</I>, <I>N</I>′)(triphenylphosphine)copper(I) dichloromethane, incorporated in poly(methyl methacrylate) exhibits superior nonlinear optical properties in the near-infrared spectral region. Its nonlinear response time and third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility at 800 nm are ≤ 90 fs and 1.8 × 10 − 10 esu, respectively. Considerable nonlinear absorption is observed with this sample, near 800 and 1250 nm. The contribution of the excited states to the total nonlinear absorption process is discussed. The results reveal the potential of this newly designed compound for multi-photon absorption-based photonic applications.</P>

Compact nanoarchitectures of lead selenide via successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction towards optoelectronic devices

        Bhat, T. S.,Vanalakar, S. A.,Devan, R. S.,Mali, S. S.,Pawar, S. A.,Ma, Y. R.,Hong, C. K.,Kim, J. H.,Patil, P. S. Springer Science + Business Media 2016 Journal of materials science Materials in electron Vol.27 No.5

<P>Thin films of Lead Selenide (PbSe) having compact nanoarchitectures were synthesized by a facile and cost-efficient successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) technique. The structural, morphological, optical and compositional properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-vis spectrophotometer, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. Moreover, the effect of SILAR cycles on the morphology of PbSe thin films was investigated. XRD patterns revealed the formation of crystalline PbSe with the cubic crystal structure. FESEM images show shape evolution from nanoparticulate to merged pyramidal-like structure with variation in size from similar to 200 to 430 nm. The optical direct band gap energy of PbSe were varies from 1.32 to 1.20 eV with the increase in deposition cycles. The HRTEM and SAED results show the crystalline nature of the sample which is in good agreement with the XRD. The electrical characterizations were performed in order to obtain the ohmic behavior in the metal-semiconductor interface. The deposited thin films show a good ohmic behavior.</P>

        Inamdar J . A .,R . Balakrishna Bhat,T . V . Ramana Rao 한국식물학회 1983 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.26 No.1

Internodal vessel elements are studied in 20 genera, 75 species and 33 cultivars of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis beloning to the Malvaceae. The minimum and maximum length and diameter range from 79∼466 and 14∼88㎛, respectively. The vessel elements are either cylindrical, fusiform, conical, clavate, oval, column-, drum-, fish and cup-like or erratic. Perforation plates are exclusively simple in all the species investigated, except occasionally scalariform in varieties of Hibiscus roas-sinensis. In most of the species studied vessel elements have predominantly two perforation plates or occasionally one and three. Adjacent side wall thichening is commonly simple and border pitted, mixed, scalariform, helical and reticulate. The vessel elements vary in their size, shape, number and inclination of perforation plates and adjacent wall thichening.
