This study was conducted to examine the effect of castration and searing of musk gland on growth performance and meat quality of Korean native goats. Thirty-two males of Korean native goats were divided into four groups ; castration, searing of musk gland, both castration and searing of musk gland, and control, respectively. Daily gain of Korean native goats was 54.7g for searing of musk gland, 52.8g for control, and 51.8g for castration, respectively. These results trended to grow faster than those treated with castration and searing of musk gland (38.7g). Feed intakes(㎏/day) were 0.3㎏ for concentrated feed and 0.5㎏ for hay, respectively. Meat percentage was 62.7% for control and 61.7% for searing of musk gland. The results were significantly greater than those with castration and castration and searing of musk gland (P $lt; 0.05). Fat percentage of carcass for castration to be 11.1% was significantly greater than those for control (P $lt; 0.05). The results of sensory evaluation for physical properties of meat trended to be better for castration and castration and searing of musk gland than those for control.
Linear Polarization Measurement of Gamma Rays in 155Gd by Using a Segmented Compton Polarimeter

A linear polarization measurement for gamma rays has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 155Gd. High-spin states in 155Gd were populated in the 154Sm(,3n )155Gd reaction by using 35-MeV alphas. Linearly polarized gamma rays emitted from oriented states were measured by using a Compton polarimeter which is made of a planar-type germanium crystal and is segmented into 25 cathodes. The linear polarization of the gamma rays was measured by selecting Compton-scattered events red in coincidence between two adjacent cathodes. The sign of the measured linear polarization enabled us to distinguish between electric and magnetic types of gamma-ray transitions. Accordingly, the parities of the high-spin states in 155Gd were directly determined. Our parity assignment is in excellent agreement with a previous one. The secreted oligomeric form of α-synuclein affects multiple steps of membrane trafficking

α-Synuclein (α-syn) can be secreted from neurons into the extracellular space, affecting the homeostasis of neighboring cells, but the pathophysiology of secreted α-syn remains largely unknown. We found that when exogenously applied to COS-7 cells, α-syn secreted from differentiated SH-SY5Y cells was taken up by dynamin-dependent endocytosis. Upon internalization, α-syn significantly increased the rate of transferrin receptor (TfR) internalization and recycling, and subsequently the surface levels of TfR. The effects are attributable to the oligomeric form, but not monomeric or fibrillar form, of extracellular α-syn. Together, multiple alterations in membrane trafficking by secreted oligomeric α-syn may contribute to the early stages of pathogenesis in Parkinson's disease.
