      • MENU-ENGINEERING IN RESTAURANTS: USING PORTION SIZES ON PLATS TO PROMOTE HEALTHY EATING

        The past decades showed an increase in the number of meals consumed away from home. Restaurants could therefore play a pivotal role in improve diet quality by offering healthier food on their menus (Glanz and Hoelscher, 2004). One of the instruments that restaurants can use to increase healthier food intake is by making use of portion size. When people are served larger portions, they eat more (Steenhuis & Vermeer, 2009). In this study, we investigate the effectiveness of increased portion sizes of vegetables and lower portion sizes of meat (or fish) in a restaurant setting. Three restaurant locations from a restaurant chain in the Netherlands were selected for a field experiment. A cross-over design was used in which each restaurant was randomly assigned to a sequence of two conditions (i.e., intervention and control condition). In the intervention period, portion sizes of vegetables on plates were doubled (150 grams versus 75 grams) and portion sizes of meat and fish were cut on average with 12.5%. Consumption was calculated by subtracting the residues from the plates from the average served amount. Additionally, p3rticipants received a questionnaire in which a number of questions were asked, i.a., about their satisfaction with the meal and restaurant. In total, 536 participants in the control condition and 470 participants in the experimental condition were obtained. Vegetable consumption was higher in intervention weeks (M = 115.5 grams) than in control weeks (M = 61.7 grams; p < .001). Meat consumption was lower in intervention weeks (M = 183.1 grams) as compared to control weeks (M = 211.1 grams; p < .001). Finally, satisfaction with the restaurant visit did not differ between intervention weeks (M = 4.27) and control weeks (M = 4.35; p > .05). The results are robust given that we found the same effects across the three restaurants. An important implication of this study is that portion sizes could indeed be used as an effective instrument in stimulating healthy consumption behavior without affecting customer’s satisfaction.

      • GRK2: a novel cell-specific regulator of severity and duration of inflammatory pain.

        <P>Chronic pain associated with inflammation is a common clinical problem, and the underlying mechanisms have only begun to be unraveled. GRK2 regulates cellular signaling by promoting G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) desensitization and direct interaction with downstream kinases including p38. The aim of this study was to determine the contribution of GRK2 to regulation of inflammatory pain and to unravel the underlying mechanism. GRK2(+/-) mice with an approximately 50% reduction in GRK2 developed increased and markedly prolonged thermal hyperalgesia and mechanical allodynia after carrageenan-induced paw inflammation or after intraplantar injection of the GPCR-binding chemokine CCL3. The effect of reduced GRK2 in specific cells was investigated using Cre-Lox technology. Carrageenan- or CCL3-induced hyperalgesia was increased but not prolonged in mice with decreased GRK2 only in Na(v)1.8 nociceptors. In vitro, reduced neuronal GRK2 enhanced CCL3-induced TRPV1 sensitization. In vivo, CCL3-induced acute hyperalgesia in GRK2(+/-) mice was mediated via TRPV1. Reduced GRK2 in microglia/monocytes only was required and sufficient to transform acute carrageenan- or CCL3-induced hyperalgesia into chronic hyperalgesia. Chronic hyperalgesia in GRK2(+/-) mice was associated with ongoing microglial activation and increased phospho-p38 and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) in the spinal cord. Inhibition of spinal cord microglial, p38, or TNF-alpha activity by intrathecal administration of specific inhibitors reversed ongoing hyperalgesia in GRK2(+/-) mice. Microglia/macrophage GRK2 expression was reduced in the lumbar ipsilateral spinal cord during neuropathic pain, underlining the pathophysiological relevance of microglial GRK2. Thus, we identified completely novel cell-specific roles of GRK2 in regulating acute and chronic inflammatory hyperalgesia.</P>

      • PHOSPHORUS AND NITROGEN REMOVAL WITH MINIMAL COD REQUIREMENT BY INTEGRATION OF DENITRIFYING DEPHOST

        Abstract-Denitrifying dephosphatation enables the removal of phosphorus and nitrogen with minimal use of COD, minimal oxygen consumption and minimal surplus sludge production. moreover it would make aeration only necessary for nitrification. Therefore we have studied an anaerobic-anoxic (A₂) sequencing batch reactor (SBR) coupled to a nitrification SBR. Denitrifying phosphorus removing bacteria (DPB) and nitrifiers were completely separated in two sludges in these two SBRs. The nitrified supernatant was recirculated from the nitrification SBR to the A₂SBR where nitrate was utilized by DPB as an electron acceptor for phosphorus removal. The technical feasibility for simultaneous phosphorus and nitrogen removal in the proposed two-sludge system was evaluated. The benefits of two-sludge systems over single-sludge systems were also discussed. It could be concluded that the separation of the nitrification step leads to an optimal process design for the application of denitrifying dephosphatation. The two-sludge system showed stable phosphorus and nitrogen removal, and enabled the removal of 15 mg-P/l and 105 mg N/l at the expense of only 400 mg-COD/l acetic acid. Stoichiometric calculations showed that, in the two-sludge system the required COD can be up to 50% less than for conventional aerobic phosphorus and nitrogen removal systems. moreover oxygen requirements and sludge production can be decreased in significant amounts of about 30 and 50%, respectively.         Phase 4, Post-Marketing Safety Surveillance of the MF59-Adjuvanted Influenza Vaccines FLUAD® and VANTAFLU® in South Korean Subjects Aged ≥65 Years

        Backgroud: Influenza vaccination is recommended for adults aged ≥65 years as they are at high risk of significant morbidity and mortality. This open-label, multicenter, post-marketing surveillance study assessed the safety of the MF59-adjuvanted trivalent inactivated subunit influenza vaccine, which is marketed as FLUAD® and VANTAFLU®, in South Korean subjects aged ≥65 years. Materials and Methods: Solicited local and systemic adverse events (AEs) were collected from day 1 to 4 of the study. All unsolicited AEs and serious AEs (SAEs) were recorded from day 1 until study termination (day 29). Results: Of the 770 subjects enrolled (FLUAD®, n = 389; VANTAFLU®, n = 381), 39% overall experienced any solicited AE. Local AEs were reported by 33% of subjects overall; with the most common events being injection-site pain (30%) and tenderness (27%). Systemic AEs were reported by 19% of subjects overall with the most common events being myalgia (11%) and fatigue (8%). Conclusion: These results show that the MF59-adjuvanted influenza vaccine known as FLUAD® or VANTAFLU® had acceptable safety profiles in older adults (aged ≥65 years) in South Korea.
