Ultrasonic Investigation of the Jahn-Teller Effect in ZnSe and ZnTe Crystals Doped with 3d Ions

The temperature dependences of the elastic moluli and the absorption of ultrasound were in- vestigated in ZnSe:Mn2+, ZnSe:V2+ and ZnTe:Ni2+ crystals. Peak of absorption and softening of the elastic modulus C4 were found at low temperatures in crystals with the 3d impurities that had orbitaly degenerate states. The observed anomalies were interpreted as a manifestation the Jahn-Telereectinanultrasonicexperiment. Thetemperaturedependencesoftherelaxationtime werereconstructed. Thepotentialbarierswereestimated: V0=5:6cm (ZnSe:V2+)and21cm-1(ZnTe:Ni2+). Softening of the modulus C44 evidenced that the local distortions were of a trigonal type. Neither anomalies in the ultrasound absorption nor those in the elastic moduli were observed in ZnSe:Mn2+, a crystal with a singlet orbital ground state of the 3d impurity.
