Background: High temperature damage in ginseng is influenced by shading materials related not only to temperature, but also to light intensity and light quality. To address, this green-colored khaki shading sheet is widely used. As they are recently, developed, there is limited research information about their attributes and use. Methods and Results: The four-layered shading net (FLSN), blue-colored shading sheet (BCSS), aluminum-coated shading board (ACSB), and green-colored shading sheet (GCSS) were installed in the wooden A type of sun-block facilities. Two layered black, shading net was additionally used to cover the facilities since the beginning of June. The average temperature at the facility where different shades were tested was in the order of BCSS (28.9℃) > FLSN (27.7℃) > GCSS (27.6℃) > ACSB (27.1℃). However, high temperature injury rates were in order: FLSN > ACSB > GCSS > BCSS. Root weight vaired and was in the order: ACSB > GCSS > BCSS > FLSN. Conclusions: High temperature damage is possible not only because of temperature increase, but also due to various environmental light factors. Ginseng high temperature injury was minimal when BCSS or GCSS were used by difference of light quality. Although the root weight was higher in ACSB, it could be vulnerable to high temperature damage. Therefore, we propose using GCSS for ginseng shading.

The primary objective of the study is to determine the factors that may affect the payment of Korean ginseng checkoff. Specifically, this study aims to analyse how various producer characteristics (demographic and socioeconomic factors) and producer attitudes toward the current voluntary ginseng checkoff program affect the probability of paying checkoff. The results from binary probit and logit models show that producers who have higher annual income and a better understanding of checkoff program are more likely to pay the ginseng checkoff. The results also find that there exist notable regional differences in the payment of ginseng checkoff.

Background: Ginseng is a medicinal plant known for its pharmacological effects as a secondary metabolite. Ginsenosides and polyphenols are the most important compounds of ginseng. These compounds and biological active depend on the cultivation conditions. Methods and Results: We used chitosan and an ultraviolet (UV) light elicitor on a 2-year old ginseng plant for increasing active compounds and biological activity. The chitosan that we used were obtained from Gryllus bimaculatus (chitosan A) and mealworm beetle (chitosan B). Chitosan B enhanced the growth, active ingredient content and physiological activity of ginseng overall. Although UV had a negative effect on ginseng growth, it increased the active compound content and biological activity. Conclusions: Chitosan is an eco-friendly organic material, believed to be easy to treat in growing ginseng. Therefore, the use of chitosan is thought to be an appropriate agent to increase the amount of ginsenoside, and enhance others compounds and physiological activity.
