Study Design: Retrospective cohort study. Purpose: To investigate the effect of spinal correction on respiratory muscle strength in patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Overview of Literature: Several studies have reported that scoliosis correction in patients with DMD does not improve pulmonary function. In these studies, pulmonary function was evaluated using the traditional spirometric values of percent vital capacity (%VC) and percent forced vital capacity (%FVC). However, traditional spirometry may not be suitable for patients with DMD because the results can be influenced by patient fatigue or level of understanding. Therefore, we evaluated respiratory function focusing on respiratory muscle strength using maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), and sniff nasal inspiratory pressure (SNIP), in addition to %VC and %FVC. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 16 patients with DMD who underwent spinal correction surgery between 2006 and 2011 at Kitasato University Hospital. All patients were males, and the mean age was 13.5 years. Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated using MIP, MEP, and SNIP. Measurements were obtained preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively, and %VC and %FVC were obtained preoperatively and within 6 months postoperatively. Results: The mean preoperative and postoperative %VC values were 54.0% and 51.7%, whereas the mean %FVC values were 53.9% and 53.2%, respectively. The mean MIP, MEP, and SNIP values obtained preoperatively and at 1 and 6 months postoperatively were as follows: MIP, 40.5, 42.7 and 47.2 cm H2O; MEP, 26.0, 28.0, and 29.0 cm H2O; and SNIP, 33.4, 33.0, and 33.0 cm H2O; respectively. The mean MIP and MEP values significantly improved postoperatively. There were no significant differences in SNIP, %VC, or %FVC preand postoperatively. Conclusions: By focusing on respiratory muscle strength, our results suggest that scoliosis correction in patients with DMD might have a favorable effect on respiratory function.

<P>We report a near-field two-photon excitation imaging technique for silver nanostructures to visualize optical fields in the vicinity of nanostructures. We have found that the excitation image of an isolated wire shows an oscillating feature along the long axis of the wire. The period of the oscillation is in good agreement with that of plasmon wavefunctions resonant with the excitation light. The oscillation was thus attributed to the resonant plasmon wavefunction. We also found that bundles of wires exhibit more intense photoluminescence signals than do isolated wires, particularly at junctions between wire ends and the shafts of other wires, which was attributed to the amplified optical fields at the ends of nanowires or interstitial gaps between the wires. We discuss the mechanism of the photoluminescence from silver nanowires. A New Species and its subspecies of the Genus Platycerus from Korea (Coleoptera, Lucanidae)

지리산에서 채집된 딱정벌레목 사슴벌레과에 속하는 Platycerus 속의 분류동정결과 신종으로 P. hongwonpyoi n.sp(원표애보라 사슴벌레, 신칭)가 밝혀졌으며, 항가리의 박물관에 소장되어있는 금강산에서 채집된 표본의 조사결과 이 신종의 아종으로 p. hongwonpyoi merkli n. ssp. (머클애보라 사슴벌레, 신칭)가 분류되어 그 형태적 특징이 기재되었다. A new species and its subspecies of the genus Platycerus are described from Korea, under the names of Platycerus hongwonpyoi and subsp. merkli. The holotype of the nominotypical species and its genitalia are illustrated.
Thermoelectric Power of Mixed-valence Golden-SmS under Pressure

The Seebeck coefficient is a useful physical quantity for identifying novel quantum states in strongly correlated materials. In this study, we performed Seebeck coefficient measurement of high-pressure mixed-valence phase of samarium monosulfide (golden-SmS).We observed Fermi-liquid behavior just after entering the high-pressure phase and in the antiferromagnetically ordered metallic phase. In the temperature derivative of the Seebeck coefficient, a peak structure corresponding to a low-temperature resistivity anomaly was also detected.
Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy on Mixed-Valent Sm1−xYxS

We report the results of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on the Sm1−xYxSsystem, which exhibits a black-to-golden phase transition induced by yttrium substitution and by anapplied external pressure, in order to investigate the mechanism of this transition and the electronicstructure of both phases. The obtained ARPES spectrum of pure SmS (x = 0) indicates a bandinsulator, in which the shallowest electronic state is the Sm2+ 4f state at a binding energy of about0.4 eV. With increasing x, the top of the Sm2+ 4f band shifts to the lower binding energy side andtouches the Fermi level for x = 0.33. Because of the discontinuous reduction of the lattice constantin the vicinity of the black-to-golden phase transition (x 0.17), the golden phase induced byyttrium substitution is concluded to be an intermediate valence state.
