• Effects of Playing Positions on Memory and Auditory Comprehension in High School Football Players with a Mild Concussion

Hyunsoo Yoo,Anthony P. Salvatore 한국언어재활사협회 2018 Clinical Archives of Communication Disorders Vol.3 No.3

Purpose: This study examined whether different playing positions of high school football players are associated with impaired memory and auditory comprehension at a sentence level after a concussion. The specific research questions are 1) whether there are significant differences in memory on the Immediate Postconcussion Assessment Cognitive Test (ImPACT) between a speed-positions group and a non-speed positions group, and 2) whether there are significant differences in auditory comprehension on Subtest VIII of the Computerized-Revised Token Test (CRTT) between the speed-positions group and the non-speed positions group. Methods: 36 acutely concussed high school football players (Age: M=14.61±1.96, Education: M=8.36±1.92) were administered the ImPACT and Subtest VIII of the CRTT which requires auditory comprehension ability at a sentence level. A group of 36 players was selected from an extant database. The group was divided into two groups based on their reported playing positions: speed-position (N=18) and non-speed-position (N=18), and matched by age and education. The speed-positions were; quarterback, running back, wide receiver, ends, defensive back, safety, and linebacker. The non-speed position group was composed of defensive and offensive linemen. IBM SPSS Statistics 24 was used to compare the two speed groups across the ImPACT and CRTT variables. Results: The results revealed that at post-concussion assessment high school athletes who play non-speed positions perform significantly poorer than a matched group of high school athletes who play speed positions on verbal memory and auditory comprehension abilities.

      • Story retelling and verbal working memory in people with aphasia

Hyunsoo Yoo,Malcolm R. McNeil 한국언어재활사협회 2019 Clinical Archives of Communication Disorders Vol.4 No.3

Purpose: This study explored the relationship between story retelling and verbal working memory (VWM) in people with aphasia due to left-hemisphere damage (PWA), people without aphasia with left-hemisphere damage (LHD) and normal healthy controls (HC). Methods: Fifteen age-matched HC and fifteen of each, PWA and LHD participants were enrolled and their performances on the Story Retell Procedure (SRP) and WM tasks were compared with tests of association and tests of difference. The experimental tasks included the SRP, where each participant retold three stories, and “percent information units per minute (%IU/Min)” was calculated as an SRP-performance measure. The Alphabet span task served as a WM measure based on a principle component analysis. Results: All Bonferroni-corrected pairwise comparisons were significant, with the PWA group producing the lowest %IU/Min, followed by the LHD group and then the HC group. The Bonferroni-corrected VWM score differences were also significant across the three groups, with the PWA group producing significantly lower %IU/Min than both other groups. The difference between the LHD and HC groups was not significant. The correlations between the %IU/Min and VWM score were all significant and ranged from 0.50 to 0.75 among the three groups. Conclusions: SRP performance yielded a continuum across the three groups, suggesting that SRP performance in PWA is consistent with a combination of both aphasia-related and brain damage-related deficits.

      • Aging Effects and Working Memory in Garden-Path Recovery

Hyunsoo Yoo,Michael Walsh Dickey 한국언어재활사협회 2017 Clinical Archives of Communication Disorders Vol.2 No.2

Purpose: The relationship between working memory (WM) and sentence comprehension (SC) has drawn many researchers’ attention. The current study examined whether healthy older adults have difficulty comprehending potentially WM-demanding garden-path sentences involving syntactic ambiguities, and whether their comprehension is predicted by their working memory capacity or inhibitory control. Methods: Older adults (n=35, ages 60–89) and younger adults (n=36, ages 19–33) completed two self-paced reading experiments and a battery of cognitive measures (working memory and inhibition tasks). Participants read the sentences containing a Minimal Attachment (MA) ambiguity in Experiment 1 and a Late Closure (LC) ambiguity in Experiment 2. Results: The older adults’ garden-path effect was larger than younger adults’ in on-line measures. However, older adults exhibited higher off-line acceptability judgments for garden-path sentences than younger adults, for both LC and MA sentences. Working memory predicted off-line performance of both younger and older groups in Experiment 2 (LC). Conclusions: The results showed age-related differences in the comprehension of sentences with temporary syntactic ambiguities. Successful recovery from garden paths (revealed by off-line measures) was predicted by working memory. However, the source of age-related differences in real-time processing remains unclear. These results indicate that healthy aging can affect comprehension of challenging, syntactically ambiguous material.

The Formation of Entrepreneurial Orientation through Transgenerational Entrepreneurial Effort and Its Impact on the Entrepreneurial Outcome: the Case of Korean Micro Family Business

        유현수(Yoo, Hyunsoo),고혜수(Ko, Hyesoo),김혜진(Kim, Hye-jin),이진화(Rhee, Jin Hwa) 한국상품학회 2020 商品學硏究 Vol.38 No.6

Micro Family Business (MFB) owners make up the majority of the total working population. Nevertheless, it is difficult to apply the existing business theories covered in literature due to the nature of the MFB owners having to manage most of the business activities. This study compares with existing family business studies using the structural equation model to figure the structural relationship among the factors affecting the MFB’s performance in terms of entrepreneurial aspect. Both transgenerational effort and entrepreneurial orientation were found to have a positive effect on the entrepreneurial outcome, either directly or indirectly. This suggests that it is possible to apply existing family business research models to micro businesses in which related data is difficult to collect. The study is valuable in that it is the starting point of the empirical study regarding MFB.

Consumer Experience and Management Response Under the Impact of COVID-19 Crisis

        유현수(Hyunsoo YOO) 한국인공지능학회 2024 인공지능연구 (KJAI) Vol.12 No.2

This study examines the relationship between customer satisfaction and management response in the hotel industry amid the COVID-19 pandemic. By applying regression analysis and topic modeling to consumer reviews on online platforms, we assess how consumer perceptions and management behaviors have shifted since the onset of the pandemic. The findings reveal a significant decline in customer satisfaction linked to COVID-19. Significantly, while the pandemic has reduced overall customer satisfaction levels, high response rates and high review-response content similarity mitigate the impact of the crises. These results highlight the critical need for hotel managers to continuously monitor online reviews and adapt their engagement strategies to maintain and enhance customer satisfaction during ongoing and future crises. This research not only corroborates existing theories on customer satisfaction but also exposes novel dynamics introduced by the pandemic, offering new insights for effective customer relationship management in turbulent times.

Glycogen synthase kinase 3β and cyclin D1 expression in cervical carcinogenesis

( Hyunsoo Park ),( Myunghwa Lee ),( Dae Woon Kim ),( Seo Yoo Hong ),( Hojung Lee ) 대한산부인과학회 2016 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.59 No.6

Objective Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) is a pluripotent protein kinase involved in the development of cancers through regulation of numerous oncogenic molecules. Cyclin D1, an important regulator of G1 to S phase transition in various cells, is one of target proteins that GSK3β regulate. Our objective was to assess the expression of GSK3β and cyclin D1 in cervical neoplasm of different histologic grades and to identify their correlation in cervical carcinogenesis. Methods Immunohistochemical analysis of GSK3β and cyclin D1 was performed in a total of 137 patients with 12 normal, 62 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) (31 CIN1 and 31 CIN3) and 63 invasive cancers including 56 squamous cell carcinomas and 7 adenocarcinomas. Results The expression of GSK3β increased in parallel with the lesion grade, while that of cyclin D1 decreased with severity of the lesion (P<0.001). There was a significant inverse correlation between GSK3β and cyclin D1 expression in overall cervical neoplasia (φ=-0.413, P<0.001). GSK3β expression was higher in squamous cell carcinoma than in adenocarcinoma (P=0.049). Conclusion These results suggest that the expressional increase in GSK3β plays a role in cervical carcinogenesis and has inverse correlation with cyclin D1 expression in this process. In addition, GSK3β expression appears to be associated with the histologic type of cervical cancer, especially squamous cell carcinoma.

The Identification of Immune-Related Plasma Proteins Associated with Spontaneous Preterm Delivery and Intra-Amniotic Infection in Women with Premature Cervical Dilation or an Asymptomatic Short Cervix

Hyunsoo Park,홍수빈,Ha-Na Yoo,Yu Mi Kim,Se Jin Lee,Kyo Hoon Park 대한의학회 2020 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.35 No.7

Background: We aimed to investigate whether various immune-related plasma proteins, alone or in combination with conventional clinical risk factors, can predict spontaneous preterm delivery (SPTD) and intra-amniotic infection in women with premature cervical dilation or a short cervix (≤ 25 mm). Methods: This retrospective study included 80 asymptomatic women with premature cervical dilation (n = 50) or a short cervix (n = 30), who underwent amniocentesis at 17–29 weeks. Amniotic fluid (AF) was cultured, and maternal plasma was assayed for interleukin (IL)-6, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases (TIMP)-1, and complements C3a and C5a, using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. The primary outcome measures were SPTD at < 32 weeks and positive AF cultures. Results: The plasma levels of IL-6, C3a, and C5a, but not of MMP-9 and TIMP-1, were significantly higher in women with SPTD at < 32 weeks than in those who delivered at ≥ 32 weeks. The women who delivered at < 32 weeks had more advanced cervical dilatation, and higher rates of antibiotic and tocolytic administration and were less likely to be given vaginal progesterone than those who delivered at ≥ 32 weeks. Using a stepwise regression analysis, a combined prediction model was developed, which included the plasma IL-6 and C3a levels, and cervical dilatation (area under the curve [AUC], 0.901). The AUC for this model was significantly greater than that for any single variable included in the predictive model. In the univariate analysis, plasma IL-6 level was the only significant predictor of intra-amniotic infection. Conclusion: In women with premature cervical dilation or a short cervix, maternal plasma IL-6, C3a, and C5a levels could be useful non-invasive predictors of SPTD at < 32 weeks. A combination of these biomarkers and conventional clinical factors may clearly improve the predictability for SPTD, as compared with the biomarkers alone. An increased plasma level of IL-6 predicted intra-amniotic infection.

      • The prognostic role of CD68 expression in patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma

( Hyunsoo Cho ),( Soo-jeong Kim ),( Hyunsung Park ),( Jung Yeon Lee ),( Ji Eun Jang ),( Yundeok Kim ),( June-won Cheong ),( Yoo Hong Min ),( Jin Seok Kim ) 대한내과학회 2015 대한내과학회 추계학술발표논문집 Vol.2015 No.1

Background: The prognostic role of the tumor microenvironment, including CD68+ tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and FoxP3+ regulatory T-cells (Tregs) in primary central nervous system lymphoma (PCNSL) has not been evaluated. Methods: We studied the prognostic role CD68 and FoxP3 expression by immunohistochemistry using FFPE tumor samples of 76 newly diagnosed immunocompetent PCNSL patients. Results: All patients were treated initially with high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX)-based chemotherapy, and 16 (21.1%) patients underwent upfront ASCT after a median of 4 cycles (range, 2-4) of HD-MTX-based chemotherapy. High CD68 expression was associated with inferior overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) in multivariate analysis (HR 3.71, 95% CI: 1.25-11.02, p=0.018, and HR 4.83, 95% CI: 1.91-12.27, p=0.001, respectively). In the non-upfront ASCT (N=60) cohort, high CD68 expression was also associated with inferior OS and PFS in multivariate analysis (p= 0.013 and p<0.001, respectively). However, high CD68 expression was not associated with neither OS nor PFS in the upfront ASCT cohort (p=0.426 and p=0.848, respectively). The expression of FoxP3 was not significantly associated with survival. Conclusions: We identified a prognostic role for high CD68 expression in PCNSL, and suggest that consolidation treatment with upfront ASCT might overcome the negative impact of high CD68 expression in PCNSL.

      • Surfactant-Free Vapor-Phase Synthesis of Single-Crystalline Gold Nanoplates for Optimally Bioactive Surfaces

        Yoo, Youngdong,Lee, Hyoban,Lee, Hyunsoo,Lee, Miyeon,Yang, Siyeong,Hwang, Ahreum,Kim, Si-in,Park, Jeong Young,Choo, Jaebum,Kang, Taejoon,Kim, Bongsoo American Chemical Society 2017 Chemistry of materials Vol.29 No.20

We report the surfactant-free vapor-phase synthesis of atomically flat and ultraclean gold nanoplates. These gold nanoplates can offer optimally functional surfaces through the immobilization of molecules without unspecific adsorption and defect, which could be quite valuable for diverse applications including biomedical sensing, plasmonics, molecular electronics, electrochemistry, etc. The ultraflat, ultraclean, and single-crystalline nanostructures, including gold nanoparticles (NPs), gold nanowires (NWs), gold nanobelts, and gold nanoplates, are stereoepitaxially grown on a substrate with a specific orientation. Moreover, the nanostructures can be selectively synthesized by experimental conditions and locations of the substrate. The geometry and orientation of the nanostructures show strong correlations, suggesting a growth process of seed NPs → NWs → nanobelts → nanoplates. This synthetic process can be explained by the mechanism in which the height-to-width ratio of gold nanostructures is determined by the ratio of the atom-supply rate by direct impingement to the atom-supply rate by surface diffusion. We finely tuned the shapes (NPs, NWs, nanobelts, or nanoplates) and sizes (from several micrometers to hundreds of micrometers) of the gold nanostructures by adjusting the deposition flux. Crucially, the surfactant-free and atomically flat gold nanoplates could be optimally bioactive surfaces. We substantially decreased the nonspecific binding of avidin by immobilizing the biotinylated molecules onto the gold nanoplates. Compared with thermally deposited gold films, the single-crystalline gold nanoplates showed a 100 times lower detection limit in the recognition of the biotin–avidin interaction. We anticipate that the gold nanoplates will bring us one-step closer to the realization of ideal biomolecular sensors because the several bioactive gold surfaces can be prepared by immobilizing various biological molecules onto the gold nanoplates.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
