Exteriorscape: physical surroundings of a service outlet in a shopping mall

While the physical elements inside service outlets have been actively researched, thephysical surroundings outside the outlet have received limited attention. This studyexplores the critical factors of physical surroundings of a service outlet in a clusteredcontext such as a shopping mall, and their customer effect. Specifically, the concept of“exteriorscape” is proposed, its components are identified theoretically and validatedempirically and, finally, their direct and indirect customer effects are empiricallyexamined. Academically, this study contributes by extending the scope of research onphysical elements of a service outlet from inside to outside the service delivery site. Managerially, this study contributes by revealing the importance of managing physicalelements surrounding a service outlet and by proposing the critical physical elementssurrounding the service outlet.

Swallowing can be affected by a variety of systemic diseases. The etiology of dysphagia in the geriatric population isusually overlooked due mainly to a presumed diagnosis of presbyphagia or difficulty in revealing the direct cause. On the other hand, dysphagia can be a meaningful clinical sign of premalignant systemic disease. A 78-year-oldman, without any prior medical or family history, was admitted with the chief complaint of dysphagia with recentaspiration pneumonia. Instrumental swallowing tests revealed a severe degree of dysphagia due to decreased laryngopharyngeal sensation and weakness of the pharyngeal constrictor muscles. Extensive workup, including electromyography and laboratory tests, revealed severe sensorimotor peripheral polyneuropathy related to monoclonal gammopathy. Monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) is a premalignant precursor of multiple myeloma, which is characterized by the proliferation of monoclonal proteins. These conditions are often associated withperipheral polyneuropathy, ataxia, and sometimes even muscle weakness. Although dysphagia can occur in othersystemic disorders, such as vasculitis or paraneoplastic syndrome-related malignancies, there are few reports of dysphagia related to MGUS. The patient was followed up for three years. The MGUS showed no further progression,but the patient showed no improvement, indicating a protracted clinical course and poor prognosis when dysphagiais related to MGUS.

The solvolysis rate constants of piperonyloyl chloride (1) in 27 different solvents are well correlated with the extended Grunwald-Winstein equation, using the $N_T$ solvent nucleophilicity scale, $Y_{Cl}$ solvent ionizing scale, and I aromatic ring parameter with sensitivity values of $0.30{\pm}0.05$, $0.71{\pm}0.02$, and $0.60{\pm}0.04$ for l, m, and h, respectively. The solvent kinetic isotope effect values (SKIE, $k_{MeOH}/k_{MeOD}$ and $k_{50%MeOD-50%D2O}$) of 1.16 and 1.12 were also in accord with the values for the $S_N1$ mechanism and/or the dissociative $S_N2$ mechanism. The product selectivity values (S) for solvolysis of 1 in alcohol/water mixtures were in the range of 0.5 to 1.9, which is also consistent with the proposed unimolecular ionization mechanism.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide derived from brown algae and possesses various beneficial activities, including antioxidant property. Previous studies have shown that fucoidan displays protective effect against ischemia-reperfusion injury in some organs. However, few studies have been reported regarding the protective effect of fucoidan against transient cerebral ischemic insults and its related mechanisms. Therefore, in this study, we examined the neuroprotective effect of fucoidan against transient global cerebral ischemia (tGCI), as well as underlying its mechanism using a gerbil model of tGCI which shows a loss of pyramidal neurons in the hippocampal cornu ammonis 1 (CA1) area after 5 min of tGCI. Fucoidan (25 and 50 mg/kg) was intraperitoneally administered once daily for 5 days before tGCI. Pretreatment with 50 mg/kg of fucoidan, not 25 mg/kg of fucoidan, attenuated tGCI-induced hyperactivity and protected CA1 pyramidal neurons from tGCI. In addition, pretreatment with 50 mg/kg of fucoidan inhibited activations of astrocytes and microglia in the ischemic CA1 area. Furthermore, pretreatment with 50 mg/kg of fucoidan significantly reduced the increased 4-hydroxy-2-noneal and superoxide anion radical production in the ischemic CA1 area and significantly increased expressions of SOD1 and SOD2 in the CA1 pyramidal neurons before and after tGCI. Additionally, treatment with diethyldithiocarbamate (an inhibitor of SODs) to the fucoidan-treated gerbils notably abolished the fucoidan-mediated neuroprotection. In brief, our present results indicate that fucoidan can effectively protect neurons from tGCI through attenuation of activated glial cells and reduction of oxidative stress via increase of SODs. Tetraiodothyroacetic acid (tetrac) is a derivative of thyroid hormone T<sub>4</sub> and causes anti-angiogenesis by blocking T<sub>4</sub> binding to integrin α<sub>v</sub>β<sub>3</sub>. In this study, we synthesized [<sup>99m</sup>Tc]Tc-Cys-Asp-Gly(CDG)-tetrac and evaluated it in vitro as a tumor angiogenesis imaging ligand. The CDG was conjugated to tetrac as a chelator for technetium-99m labeling. The cold vial containing CDG-tetrac, sodium glucoheptonate, and reducing agent was completed under nitrogen-filled atmospheric glove bag. [<sup>99m</sup>Tc]Tc-CDG-tetrac was synthesized in quantitative yield by heating the cold vial with [<sup>99m</sup>Tc]TcO<sub>4</sub><sup>-</sup> at 100℃ for 30 min. In vitro serum stability of [<sup>99m</sup>Tc]Tc-CDG-tetrac was measured by incubating the radioligand in 50% fetal bovine serum at 37℃ and analyzing the incubation mixture by radio-TLC, which showed high stability over 6 h (≥ 98%). Cell binding study was carried out by incubating [<sup>99m</sup>Tc]Tc-CDG-tetrac with human umbilical vein endothelial (HUVE) cells at 37℃ for 6 h. The cell binding of the radioligand increased from 100% at 0.5 h to 293.7% at 6 h in a time-dependent manner. For blocking study, the cells were incubated with the radioligand in the presence of either tetrac (20 μM) or cRGDyK (20 μM) at 37℃ for 4 h. The results demonstrated that the cell binding of the radioligand was inhibited by tetrac (19.1%) or cRGDyK (35.6%), indicating specific binding of the radioligand to integrin α<sub>v</sub>β<sub>3</sub>. Thus, this study suggests that [<sup>99m</sup>Tc]Tc-CDG-tetrac may be a potential radioligand for tumor angiogenesis imaging.
A Rare Case of Canine Huge Renal Cell Carcinoma with Ovarian Metastasis

A 10-year-old female Pomeranian weighing 2.25 kg with a history of gradual weight loss and an intraabdominal mass confirmed with ultrasonography at a local hospital was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital, Jeju National University. Physical examination revealed abdominal distention. Blood analysis revealed hypoglycemia (57 mg/dL; reference range, 60-110 mg/dL). On abdominal ultrasonography, a heterogeneously hyperechoic mass measuring 7.51 × 10.6 cm was found at the level of the left kidney. Computed tomographic findings showed a unilateral left kidney mass with a 10-cm diameter and vessel contrast enhancement in the corticomedullary phase. Unilateral nephrectomy and ovariohysterectomy were performed because left ovary enlargement was observed during surgery. The renal mass was adjacent to the aorta and vena cava and attached to a portion of the small intestine, greater omentum, and left ovary. The mass was huge (12.5 × 10 × 7 cm) and was 16.5% of the body weight. Histopathological examination revealed renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and ovarian metastasis. After surgery, clinical signs improved remarkably, and serum glucose level returned to normal. As RCC is resistant to radiation and chemotherapy, the owner decided not to proceed with postoperative adjunctive therapies. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case report of ovarian metastasis with huge RCC in a dog.
