Pleiotropic regulator 1 (PLRG1), a highly conserved element inthe spliceosome, can form a NineTeen Complex (NTC) withPrp19, SPF27, and CDC5L. This complex plays crucial roles inboth pre-mRNA splicing and DNA repair processes. Here, weprovide evidence that PLRG1 has a multifaceted impact oncancer cell proliferation. Comparing its expression levels incancer and normal cells, we observed that PLRG1 was upregulatedin various tumor tissues and cell lines. Knockdown ofPLRG1 resulted in tumor-specific cell death. Depletion of PLRG1had notable effects, including mitotic arrest, microtubule instability,endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, and accumulation ofautophagy, ultimately culminating in apoptosis. Our results alsodemonstrated that PLRG1 downregulation contributed to DNAdamage in cancer cells, which we confirmed through experimentalvalidation as DNA repair impairment. Interestingly, whenPLRG1 was decreased in normal cells, it induced G1 arrest asa self-protective mechanism, distinguishing it from effects observedin cancer cells. These results highlight multifaceted impactsof PLRG1 in cancer and underscore its potential as a novelanti-cancer strategy by selectively targeting cancer cells.
Improving mobile accessibility based on characteristics and behavior of the visually impaired

Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate behavior of people with visual impairment (including blind and low vision) and analyze their characteristics to improve mobile accessibility. Background: Even with ongoing attempts to improve mobile accessibility and minimize the information gap for the visually impaired, such as creating and enforcing accessibility guide for mobile devices, they are still faced with difficulties when using mobile devices. Therefore it is crucial to realize specific characteristics of different types of visual impairment and approach the real needs of these users when designing smartphone UX. Method: Six visually impaired participants (three fully blind, three low vision) are observed in their daily life using Shadow Tracking. Various daily activities and events, such as travelling from area to another, checking location information, using other supporting devices, using smartphone and more, are observed to refresh and improve current understandings on their behavior patterns and spot the real critical needs. Results: It was commonly observed among participants that voice assistant was used tremendously and travelling from one area to another was the activity with most difficulty. However, resulting behaviors widely varied based on their level of impairment and the starting point of it. Conclusion: This study observed daily lives and mobile device usages of visually impaired, and analyzed the different characteristics of behaviors by different types of visual impairment. These findings will lead to future design researches on UX improvements for current accessibility features and also on building general UX principles for voice assistant. Application: This research will be used for improving and designing mobile accessibility UX for people with visual impairment.
Hydrogen Permeation of ZnO-SiC Membranes Encapsulated with SiO2

ZnO and SiC powders were fabricated to make crack-free composite membranes. Parts of some membranes were re-treatedwith an encapsulation process. These membranes were characterized by XRD, BET, and FE-SEM analyzes. The hydrogen permeationfluxes of the encapsulated and heat-treated membranes after encapsulation were observed using Sievert’s type equipment. Values were measured at 1 bar with increasing temperatures. The obtained values of encapsulated and further heat-treatedmembrane at 298 K were 4.20 × 10−6and 8.64 × 10−5 mol/m2sPa, respectively.

Background: Dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) are thought to modify systemic inflammation. The present study aimed to evaluate the relationship between PUFA intake, lung function, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: In this study, we used the dataset of 6th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, in which, a total of 22,948 individuals including 573 participants with a high probability of developing COPD were enrolled. Participants with missing data for the investigated variables were excluded. Linear regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between PUFA intake (omega-3 [N3], omega-6 [N6], and total) with lung function, and HRQoL. HRQoL was determined according to the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D). Subgroup analysis of older patients was performed. Age, sex, body mass index, smoking, alcohol, education, residence, total calorie intake, and predicted FEV1% were adjusted in all analyses. Results: Although lung function was not associated with PUFA intake, EQ-5D index was remarkably associated with N3, N6, and total PUFA intake in a dose-dependent manner. This association was more pronounced in elderly COPD patients. Mean levels of N3, N6, and total PUFA intake were significantly higher in patients having better HRQoL with respect to mobility, self-care, and usual activities. Conclusion: Our results suggest that N3, N6, and total PUFA intake are associated with HRQoL in COPD patients. This association may be attributed to mobility, self-care, and usual activities. Further longitudinal study is required to clarify this relationship.
