Periosteal osteosarcoma is a distinct entity of malignant bone tumor with characteristic clinical, morphological, and histological features within the group of juxtacortical osteosarcoma. Periosteal osteosarcoma is predominantly located in the tubular long bones, and extremely rarely involving the jaws. A case of periosteal osteosarcoma of the right mandible is presented. A 27-year-old woman complained of the gingival swelling and bleeding tendency of the right posterior mandible. Clinical examination revealed a reddish brown strawberry-like swelling on the affected mucosa, which measured 1.5㎝×1.5㎝. The tumor was located on the lingual cortex of the mandible and extended into the surrounding soft tissues. Microscopically, the tumor consisted exclusively of atypical chondroblastic cells with a small osteoblastic area. A minimal bone marrow involvement was noted and the adjacent cortex was free of tumor. These findings suggested that the tumor originated from the periosteal cambium layer, which lies between the periosteal fibrous layer and the cortex of mandible.

Exogenous expression of ANO9 in PANC-1 cells significantly increased cell proliferation in cell cultures and in mice. In contrast, knockdown of ANO9 in AsPC-1, BxPC-3, and Capan-2 cells strongly inhibited cell proliferation. Mechanistic analysis suggested that physical association of ANO9 with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) underlies ANO9-induced cell proliferation. Knockdown of ANO9 augmented the effects of the EGFR inhibitor and the cytotoxic agent on pancreatic cancer cell proliferation. In addition, high ANO9 expression is a poor prognostic factor in patients with pancreatic cancer.

Conclusions:

The ANO9/TMEM16J appears to be a clinically useful prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer and a potential therapeutic target.

Measurement of re-suspended road dust emission factor using mobile laboratory and flux tower

Re-suspended road dust is one of the main urban atmospheric pollutants. Thus, systematic management of polluted roads is essential, which requires precise measurement of re-suspended road dust emission factors. A mobile laboratory (ML) and a flux tower (FT) were used to measure re-suspended road dust. Re-suspended road dust concentration was measured while driving the ML at speeds of 40, 50, and 60 km/h along straight sections of five different roads in Incheon City, Korea. The correlation between measurements using the ML and the FT was anlyzed according to the ML speed. The results revealed a linear relationship between the mass concentration measured by the ML and the emission factor obtained from the FT. At faster ML speeds, the same emission factor was associated with higher concentrations measured by the ML. Thus, if the ML measurements are adjusted for the ML speed by employing the methods of this study, re-suspended road dust emission factors can be measured more accurately. Based on these findings, it is expected that the use of the MLs will contribute to reducing re-suspended road dust by enabling more effective management of road pollution levels.
