Macroblock type mapping method in MPEG-2 to H.264 video transcoder

This paper presents a macroblock (MB) type mapping method which considers a subtle difference of skipped-macroblock in MPEG-2 and H.264/AVC. A bitstream compressed by H.264 contains much more skipped- MB than a bitstream compressed by MPEG-2 does since H.264 adopts an improved concept of skipped-MB. Experimental results show that the proposed method takes advantage of the improved skipped-MB of H.264 fully.
Fast Object Detection Method for Visual Surveillance

Most of the algorithms developed for object detection employ a background-subtraction technique which requires heavy computation. In this paper, we present a fast background-subtraction technique which can be readily applied to many existing object detection algorithms. The proposed technique consists of three parts: persistent background-subtraction, background-subtraction with nearby searching, and skipped background-subtraction. Experimental results show that the proposed technique can detect the moving objects effectively without any degradation of reliability.
Kernel-Based Structural Binary Pattern Tracking

<P>In this paper, we propose a new pattern model, called the structural binary pattern (SBP) model, for object tracking. For the proposed SBP model, we introduce an alternate thresholding scheme to generate a set of multiple SBPs. The SBP encodes not only the binary pattern consisting of binarized differences between the average intensities of subregions within the target region, but also the spatial configuration of the subregions. With the proposed SBP model, we define a metric for similarity between the SBP models from the target and candidate for target localization, which is based on an isotropic kernel weighted Hamming distance. To further improve the tracking performance, we employ a color-based tracking method along with the SBP-based tracking method. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm exhibits the better performance even when the object being tracked confronts drastic illumination changes, partial occlusion, a similar colored background, or low illumination as compared with conventional tracking methods.</P>
Object Modeling with Color Arrangement for Region-Based Tracking

In this paper, we propose a new color histogram model for object tracking. The proposed model incorporates the color arrangement of the target that encodes the relative spatial distribution of the colors inside the object. Using the color arrangement, we can determine which color bin is more reliable for tracking. Based on the proposed color histogram model, we derive a mean shift framework using a modified Bhattacharyya distance. In addition, we present a method of updating an object scale and a target model to cope with changes in the target appearance. Unlike conventional mean shift based methods, our algorithm produces satisfactory results even when the object being tracked shares similar colors with the background.
An efficient POCS-based post-processing technique using wavelet transform in HDTV

In this paper, we propose a new post-processing method, based on the theory of the projection onto convex sets (POCS) to reduce the in digital high definition television (HDTV) decoded images. We propose a new smoothness constraint set (SCS) and its projection operator in the wavelet transform (WT) domain to remove unnecessary high-frequency components caused by blocking artifacts. We also propose a new method to find and preserve the original high frequency components of the image edge. Experimental results show that the proposed method can not only achieve a significantly enhanced subjective quality, but also exhibit the PSNR improvement in the output image.

본 논문에서는 복원된 영상에서 블록현상을 제거하기 위해 POCS 이론을 기반으로 효율적인 후처리 기법을 제안한다. 블록 현상을 나타내는 불필요한 고주파성분을 제거하기 위해 웨이브렛 변환으로 효과적인 SCS 및 그 투영자를 제안한다. 또한 원 영상에서 에지로 나타나는 고주파성분은 찾아서 유지하는 방법도 제안한다. 실험결과로 제안하는 방법은 향상된 주관적 화질뿐만 아니라, 복원된 출력 영상에서의 PSNR이 향상됨을 알 수 있다. 불법 주정차 차량 단속을 위한 차량 검지 및 추적 기법

본 논문은 불법 주정차 단속을 위한 정지 차량 검지 및 추적 기법을 제안한다. 제안하는 알고리즘은 크게 네 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 먼저, 입력 영상으로부터 움직이는 차량을 구분하기 위하여 향상된 코드북 물체 검지 알고리즘을 이용한 차량 검지 알고리즘을 제안한다. 두 번째로 차량의 기하학적 특징을 이용하여 차량이 아닌 물체는 제외시키는 전처리 기법을 사용한다. 그런 다음, 검지된 결과 차량들을 히스토그램 추적 기법과 칼만 필터를 결합한 추적 알고리즘을 이용하여 추적한다. 추적 결과를 더 정확하게 하기 위하여, 히스토그램 추적 결과를 칼만 필터의 측정 데이터로 사용한다. 마지막으로, 정지 차량 검지 알고리즘의 신뢰성 있고 정확한 성능을 위하여 실제 정지 카운터 (RSC)를 제안한다. 실험결과로부터 제안한 시스템은 복잡한 실제 도로 환경에서도 여러 차량을 동시에 추적할 수 있고, 정지 차량을 성공적으로 검지해냄을 확인한다. This paper presents a robust vehicle detection and tracking algorithm for supervision of illegal parking. The proposed algorithm is composed of four parts. First, a vehicle detection algorithm is proposed using the improved codebook object detection algorithm to segment moving vehicles from the input sequence. Second, a preprocessing technique using the geometric characteristics of vehicles is employed to exclude non-vehicle objects. Then, the detected vehicles are tracked by an object tracker which incorporates histogram tracking method with Kalman filter. To make the tracking results more accurate, histogram tracking results are used as measurement data for Kalman filter. Finally, Real Stop Counter (RSC) is introduced for trustworthy and accurate performance of the stopped vehicle detection. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can track multiple vehicles simultaneously and detect stopped vehicles successfully in the complicated street environment.
Selective inter-layer residual prediction for SVC-based video streaming

<P>The scalable video coding (SVC) standard adopts the inter-layer residual prediction (ILRP) algorithm to encode the residual signal of the enhancement layer (EL). The ILRP reduces the number of bits required for encoding the residual signal but incurs excessive encoding time. In this paper, we propose a fast encoding algorithm for SVC-based video streaming. In this algorithm, the ILRP is selectively applied to the coding modes depending on their Lagrangian rate-distortion costs. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can reduce computational complexity with negligible video quality degradation and bitrate increments.</P>
