Discourse Analysis of Microteaching : Dynamic Identities and Situational Frames

        Ryoo. Hye-Kyung 한국사회언어학회 2017 사회언어학 Vol.25 No.2

Ryoo, Hye-Kyung. 2017. “Discourse Analysis of Microteaching: Dynamic Identities and Situational Frames”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 25(2), 165~196. The present paper is based on a discourse analysis of Microteaching speech events of Korean pre-service training students taking a teacher training course in college. The purpose of this study is to look closely into what really is going on in the discourse of microteaching events in terms of the participants identity enactment and framing of situations. Fifteen pre-service training students microteaching lessons were video-taped and transcribed to examine detailed discourse features. The results of the qualitative analysis of the discourse revealed frequent dynamic shifting and enactments of identities in momentary situational frames. The participants in the present study were able to act on diverse situational frames by orienting to locally-managed situated identities.

      • 프리셉터 경험이 간호업무수행과 직무만족에 미치는 영향 연구

        류언나,송혜숙,장은희,서효신,추연화,김인선,나명주,지성애,박경숙 중앙대학교 간호과학연구소 2001 중앙간호논문집 Vol.5 No.2

The purpose of this study was to investigate how preceptor experience has an effect upon preceptor nurses. This study was so designed that it could compare the difference between clinical performance and Job satisfaction of preceptor nurses and those of nonpreceptor nurses. Study subjects were sampled out from those nurses who worked with two university hospitals where preceptor programs were implemented. The number of subjects totaled to 134, including 69 preceptor nurses and 70 nonpreceptor nurses. The score of preceptor nurses' clinical performance and job satisfaction revealed a higher value than that of nonpreceptor nurses. A similar result was also shown in the subdomains. However these difference were not statistically significant. Among all of the preceptor nurses, the highest number of preceptor experience was just one time. Except for five times in preceptor experience, the more the number of times of preceptor experience, the higher score in clinical performance. It was manifested that the number of preceptor experience was not related to job satisfaction. The score of preceptor nurses' clinica1 performance and job satisfaction revealed a higher value than that of nonpreceptor nurses. A similar result was also shown in the subdomains. However these difference were not statistically significant. The reward that preceptor nurses wished most was a reduction of the work load assigned to them. Currently preceptor nurses are only receiving a small quantity of financial reward related with their preceptor role. Most of preceptor nurses (96.8%) were not satisfied with their existing reward. Almost half of the preceptor nurses(43.5%) did not want to play a role as preceptor again. The reason why the scores of clinical performance and job satisfaction were low might be attributed to the inadequate preceptor training program and reward system. Appropriate knowledge and clinical skill are expected to enhance the level of preceptor nurses' clinical performance and appropriate internal and external reward to elevate the level of preceptor nurses' Job satisfaction. Therefore, it is needed for us to develop more effective preceptor education program, financial reward, support of colleague nurses and nursing managers, and adjust workload for the purpose of more effective preceptor programs.

      • Dealing with communication difficulties : A study on communication strategies by native and nonnative speakers of English

류혜경 대구대학교 인문과학연구소 2008 人文科學硏究 Vol.31 No.-

The Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD) and Scaffolding in the Learner-Learner Interactions in Second Language

        Hye-Kyung Ryoo 한국응용언어학회 2009 응용 언어학 Vol.25 No.3

The Vygotskian concepts of Zone of Proximal Development(ZPD) and scaffolding(Vygotsky, 19789,1986) in small group learner interactions have gained extensive research interests in recent years. Scaffolding in the right ZPD has been claimed to facilitate second language development. The present study is an attempt to closely investigate the scaffolding mechanisms and ZPD in small group discussion activities. The detailed qualitative analysis of data shows that the learners engaged in varying patterns of scaffolding and the ZPD depending on the particular interactional mechanisms. Overall, the learners benefited from participating in scaffolding actions, particularly, in collective scaffolding instances when they collaboratively worked together as equally contributing participants. The learners also gained help when they focused attention on their language gaps in helping the other peers and relied on their own resources. On the other hand, some peer scaffolding actions in the expert-novice framework gave rather limited opportunities to the learners in that the scaffolding help was not fully appropriated by the learners.

Frame Shift as Interactional Resource in Service Encounters between Shopkeepers and Customers

        Hye-kyung Ryoo 한국사회언어학회 2005 사회언어학 Vol.13 No.1

This study presents an in-depth analysis of talk between immigrant shopkeepers and customers in terms of how participants' frequent frame shifts were constructed and how they contributed to friendly interactions between the two groups. The concepts of Goffman's (1974, 1981) 'situational frame' and 'frame shift' were applied to describe the process in which the participants frequently changed their stances and alignments toward their interactions in the stores. The data collected in two Korean-owned retail stores were transcribed for tum-by-tum analysis. An in-depth analysis of talk in this study shows ample evidence that the participants dynamically and actively participated in changing the situational frames, which contributed greatly to building solidarity and rapport between the participants.

Teasing as an Interactional Resource for Humor and Identity Construction in Language Learner Interactions

        Hye-Kyung Ryoo 담화·인지언어학회 2010 담화와 인지 Vol.17 No.1

This paper describes the process of identity construction of the nonnative speaker learners of English through teasing. The study is based on a close examination of the talk-in-interaction in learner-learner small group discussion activities. The analysis of sequentially developing turns of talk in teasing action revealed that the learners enacted their nonnative speaker identity as an interactional resource in collaboratively constructing teasing actions. It was found that the learners' teasing each other on their second language difficulties played a role of making otherwise stressful second language use situations a relaxing and friendly environment through evoking a playful situational frame. Based on the findings, this paper argues for the positive role of teasing for the language learners to attend to their language mistakes and errors in a less stressful environment.

      • Transactional or interactional?

        Hye-Kyung Ryoo(류혜경) 담화·인지언어학회 2004 담화·인지언어학회 학술대회 발표논문집 Vol.- No.-

The distinction has been made between two different aspects of language use in the speech event of service encounters; one aspect of language is mainly for business transactions (e.g., talking about the availability and prices of goods) and the other function is to manage interpersonal relationships (e.g., interchanging small talk, using polite address terms, etc.). The present study examines the merge between transactional and interactional aspects of language in service encounter interactions. The present paper is based on the data analysis in the study of talk between Korean immigrant shopkeepers and African American customers in service encounters in a Korean-owned store in the United States. From the detailed analysis of talk, it has been found that there were many incidents in the data that displayed a merge of the two aspects of interaction, interactional and transactional. The present paper shows how participants tactfully concentrated on the business or transactional matter at hand and simultaneously achieved the interactional goal of rapport and solidarity building.

College EFL Learners` Target Language Use in Simulated Job Interviews

Hye Kyung Ryoo 언어과학회 2014 언어과학연구 Vol.0 No.69

The present study explores the ways in which Korean college EFL learners shape their talk in self-introductions in simulated job interviews. Drawing on both discourse and linguistic analysis of the data, this study examines EFL learners` self-introduction talk in their target language. Both the content and linguistic aspects of their language use were examined in detail based on the evaluations of the interviews by a professional interviewer. The results show that the majority of the interviewees were not chosen as probable candidates for employment by the evaluator. The data analysis identify several linguistic and discourse patterns exhibited by the participants that could have possibly contributed to the unsuccessful outcome of their self-introductions. The results of the data analysis indicate that the participating students were having difficulties in the aspects of in terms of both language and contents of their self-introductions. Detailed analysis focusing on the participants challenges and difficulties are presented with some implications for teaching practical job interview skills to college students.
