Objective: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the prevalence of chronic endometritis, diagnosed using CD138 immunohistochemistry, among infertile women and to assess the association between chronic endometritis and recurrent implantation failure (RIF).Methods: In total, 266 patients who underwent hysteroscopy due to infertility between 2019 and 2020 were included in the analysis. Of these, 136 patients with RIF and 130 non-RIF patients were included in the study. CD138 immunohistochemistry test results, blood biomarkers (including natural killer cells, white blood cells, and the lymphocyte-to-neutrophil ratio), and data on pregnancy outcomes were obtained. If the CD138 test yielded a positive result, the patients received antibiotic treatment. Results: The overall proportion of CD138-positive patients was 32.7% (87/266). The CD138 positivity rate was not related to the number of cycles with implantation failure. In the RIF patient group, no significant associations were found between CD138 positivity and peripheral blood markers. The clinical pregnancy rates were similar between infertile women treated with antibiotics for chronic endometritis and those without chronic endometritis. Conclusion: To improve the pregnancy rate in infertile patients, it may be helpful to combine CD138 testing with other laboratory tests and administer antibiotic treatment if the result is positive.

Zinc is an endogenous transition metal that can be synaptically released during neuronal activity. However, zinc may contribute to the neuropathology associated with a variety of conditions. Carnosine expressed in glial cells can modulate the effects of zinc on neuronal excitability as a zinc chelator. We hypothesize that carnosine may protect against neurotoxicity of zinc in cortical neuronal cells. The cortical neuronal cells from newborn rats were prepared and exposed to zinc chloride and/or carnosine at various concentrations. Zinc at the doses of 0 to $500{\mu}M$ decreased neuronal cell viability in a dose-dependent manner. Additionally, at the concentrations of 100 and $200{\mu}M$, it significantly decreased cell viability in an exposed time-dependent manner (p < 0.05). Treatment with carnosine at the concentrations of 20 and $200{\mu}M$ significantly increased neuronal cell proliferation by approximately 14% and 20%, respectively, compared to the control (p < 0.05). At the concentrations of 100 and $200{\mu}M$ zinc, $20{\mu}M$ carnosine significantly increased the viability of neuronal cells by 18.3% and 12.1 %, and $200{\mu}M$ carnosine also increased it by 33.5% and 28.6%, respectively, compared to the normal control group (p < 0.01). These results suggest that carnosine at a physiologically relevant level may protect against zinc-mediated toxicity in neuronal cells as an endogenous neuroprotective agent.

The experiment studied the effect of harvesting frequencies and varieties on yield, chemical composition and hydrogen cyanide content in cassava foliage. Foliage from three cassava varieties, K94 (very bitter), K98-7 (medium bitter) and a local (sweet), were harvested in three different cutting cycles, at 3, 6 and 9 months; 6 and 9 months and 9 months after planting, in a 2-yr experiment carried out in Hanoi, Vietnam. Increasing the harvesting frequency increased dry matter (DM) and crude protein (CP) production in cassava foliage. The K94 variety produced higher foliage yields than the other two varieties. Dry matter, neutral detergent fibre (NDF), acid detergent fibre (ADF) and total tannin content increased with months to the first harvest, whereas CP content decreased. Hydrogen cyanide (HCN) content was lower at the first harvest than at later harvests for all cutting cycles. At subsequent harvests the content of total tannins tended to decline, while HCN content increased (p<0.05). Chemical composition differed somewhat across varieties except for total tannins and ash. Dry matter, NDF, ADF and total tannins were higher in fully matured leaves, while CP and HCN were lower in developing leaves.

Objective : Bilateral C1-2 transarticular screw fixation (TAF) with interspinous wiring has been the best treatment for atlantoaxial instability (AAI). However, several factors may disturb satisfactory placement of bilateral screws. This study evaluates the usefulness of unilateral TAF when bilateral TAF is not available. Methods : Between January 2003 and December 2007, TAF was performed in 54 patients with AAI. Preoperative studies including cervical x-ray, three dimensional computed tomogram, CT angiogram, and magnetic resonance image were checked. The atlanto-dental interval (ADI) was measured in preoperative period, immediate postoperatively, and postoperative 1, 3 and 6 months. Results : Unilateral TAF was performed in 27 patients (50%). The causes of unilateral TAF were anomalous course of vertebral artery in 20 patients (74%), severe degenerative arthritis in 3 (11%), fracture of C1 in 2, hemangioblastoma in one, and screw malposition in one. The mean ADI in unilateral group was measured as 2.63 mm in immediate postoperatively, 2.61 mm in 1 month, 2.64 mm in 3 months and 2.61 mm in 6 months postoperatively. The mean ADI of bilateral group was also measured as following; 2.76 mm in immediate postoperative, 2.71 mm in 1 month, 2.73 mm in 3 months, 2.73 mm in 6 months postoperatively. Comparison of ADI measurement showed no significant difference in both groups, and moreover fusion rate was 100% in bilateral and 96.3% in unilateral group (p=0.317). Conclusion : Even though bilateral TAF is best option for AAI in biomechanical perspectives, unilateral screw fixation also can be a useful alternative in otherwise dangerous or infeasible cases through bilateral screw placement.

Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs) have been proven to be a key ingredient found in breast milk and beneficial to infant health. Structurally, the fucose-containing oligosaccharides are major components, with a proportion of approximately 50–80% in the HMOs. In particular, 2-fucosyllactose (2’-FL) and 3-fucosyllactose (3-FL) are 2 major components of the abundant HMO component. Importantly, 2’-FL is approved for use in infant formula for improving probiotic functions by the FDA of the USA and the European Food Safety Authority, while 3-FL can be used as a prebiotic to improve the growth of beneficial microorganisms. Over the last decade, various approaches have been conducted for fucosyllactose (FL) production, including chemical synthesis, enzymatic conversion, and microbial fermentation. Most studies were performed in Escherichia coli due to the simple culture conditions and availability of various genetic tools. Besides E. coli, Bacillus subtilis and Saccharomyces cerevisiae have also been selected as the hosts for the production of FL due to their generally regarded safe (GRAS) status. As a type of GRAS strain, Corynebacterium glutamicum has been widely used in the biosynthesis of food-grade, high-value-added products, including lysine, glutamic acid, violacein and resveratrol. In this study, the biosynthetic enzymes of FL were condon-optimized and heterologously expressed in engineered C. glutamicum for the production of FL. The trace amount production of FL was confirmed by TLC, HPLC in this study.
